But seriously, you'd have to think of a different translation for "China", wouldn't you? Although then again, if you took the allusion to the country of China out all together, readers would be missing the fun. And what about Mexico/ the rest of the countries?

And China (Maine) is actually a pretty nice place, with a lake and everything.

How did the Town of China get its name?

In 1818, the Town of Harlem was incorporated as the Town of China. Its voters had chosen the name Bloomville. Maine was then a part of Massachusetts and in those days Boston, the legislative seat, was a week’s journey by horse and wagon. Harlem’s representative was not allowed to use the name Bloomville as there was another town in the United States by that name. With hometown sentiment 200 miles away and no telephone or telegraph, it was entirely up to him to present a new name. As the hymn “China” was a great favorite of his, he presented that name.

Y-sun, I agree with you (the only other possibility I could think of would have been something like 中华, but ultimately too awkward).

If China, ME ever grows into a multi-million person city this would really become hard, wouldn't it?

David

China, Maine Nov 28, 2016

Preston Decker wrote:

Y-sun, I agree with you (the only other possibility I could think of would have been something like 中华, but ultimately too awkward).

Preston,

Thank you! I think the main reason to translate China (Maine) into 中国 is that our translation should be in line with translations of all other foreign names of these towns in Maine. Some of the foreign names are indeed related to the respective foreign countries. For example, the towns of Denmark and Peru in Maine were named in 19th century to show solidarity with Denmark and Peru respectively against their invaders. The second reason is that, as you mentioned before, “Although then again, if you took the allusion to the country of China out all together, readers would be missing the fun”.

On the other hand, I don’t think it is necessary to put “新” in front of “中国” because “新中国” should be for “New China”. Considering the fact that we have both Canton and New Canton in Illinois. And we also have both London and New London in several states in the United States. Their names should be translated differently. By the way, I stayed in New Hampshire for three years. I also travelled to Maine during that period. I do love the beautiful New England!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton,_Illinois
Canton was founded in 1825 by settler Isaac Swan, who believed his new town and Canton, China, were antipodes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Canton,_Illinois

As to “钱哪”, I was just kidding. However, we do have a town named “Money” in Mississippi.

This discussion is getting more and more interesting!

I didn't know China and the other countries were so close to me when I was in New Hampshire. The farthest place in Maine I reached is the Bush Compound. Of course, the security guards didn't let me in.
