German term or phrase: kurzgeschlossen
Hi guys,

Just struggling to get a picture of what's going on here:

kurzgeschlossen/kurzschließen -> often translated as 'bypassed' or 'short-circuited' etc.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Gavin

Perhaps 'the thermostat is triggered', as suggested by Lancashireman, is better.

If you use 'shorted' or 'short-circuited', I would know what is meant (switched to path of least resistance). However, I don't recommend using it in this context.

At a temperature of under 80°C, a thermostat shuts off the flow of oil and the aluminium cooler is bypassed.

Definitely not short-circuit, for the electrifying reason stated by jccantrell. In fact, best not to mention circuit of any kind (=circulation).

'wurde' (past tense) presumably because this is how it was designed/constructed, but present tense in EN because it refers to continuing functionality.

neutral  Herbmione Granger: I don't think that's what's going on. More of a figurative 'short circuit'. //So sad :( Thanks, though.//The T drop signals the thermostat to switch the valve.//Yes. I would rather have a different sentence to start :)

-> Sadly, they don't do 'figurative' in technical texts. I like your updated version, though. // However, "the thermostat is activated" implies that it plays a passive role whereas it is actually the controller. // 'triggers' might work.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Cancelling out the unwarranted disagree. This is basically what I posted in the discussion box. I've even included a diagram to illustrate, so I don't know how this is still a matter of debate. I'd say omit it because this is bad style, even in German.

by-passed

Explanation:

Is it possible to write the word by-pass with the hyphen, or is it considered wrong?
According to Dictionary.com it's optional.

Answers:

I certainly wouldn't consider it wrong.

I would write it with a hyphen, but I´m old (49).

Without a hyphen looks weird to me. E-mail also looked weird to me till I got used to it.

Two American dictionaries, Random House Unabridged, and American Heritage, have by-pass as the listed headword, with the unhyphenated form given as a valid alternate. Cambridge Advanced Learners and WR's own Princeton Word-net do not show the hyphenated form at all.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bimetall

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermostatventil

http://www.mein-autolexikon.de/heizungklima/thermostat.html

http://www.kfz-tech.de/Biblio/Kuehlung/Thermostat.htm

High performance vehicles require large oil coolers to ensure that the oil does not overheat during strenuous use. These coolers also introduce the danger of over-cooling the oil and delaying engine warm-up, resulting in horsepower loss, excessive engine wear and reduced gas mileage. Oil thermostats perform the critical function of bypassing the oil cooler until the oil has reached its minimum operating temperature.
http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-thermostats/high-flow-engi...

Operation
The thermostat bypasses the oil cooler until the fluid reaches the activation temperature. At the activation temperature, the bypass valve begins to close, forcing oil through the cooler and allowing it to cool. If the cooler’s cooling capacity is sufficient, the fluid will tend to stabilize at the rated stabilization temperature.
http://www.improvedracing.com/manuals/FSM-185.pdf

The built-in thermostat prevents oil flow to the cooler until the engine oil reaches activating temperature, allowing for both a faster warmup at startup and extra oil system protection in cold climates.
http://www.mishimoto.eu/mishimoto-thermostatic-oil-sandwich-...

oil thermostat. Empi packaged. Mounts in-line and by-passes oil cooler until oil warms up to approximately 175 degrees. Always partially open to avoid over pressurizing.

The next link illustrates the mounting of the thermostat and the different oil flows regulated by the thermostat:
You should be able to buy a thermostatic valve, a sandwich plate, and a remote oil filter mount.
Then route like so:
https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/tech-tips/oil-cooler...
(Either from sandwich plate via oil thermostat and oil cooler back to oil filter and sandwich plate or from sandwich plate via oil thermostat directly to oil filter and sandwich plate bypassing the oil cooler.

Another circuit scheme is shown under
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/5...
including thermostat/by-pass valve and oil cooler. Two different oil flows under cool and warm conditions controlled by the thermostatic by-pass valve are illustrated as well.

External Oil Cooler By-passed on RAT Type 4
The VW engine, both type 1 and type 4, have a so-called "internal cooler" that sits on top of the engine inside of the fan shroud. The flow of oil through that internal cooler is controlled by pressure valve in the bottom of the case. The temperature is controlled by oil pressure: When the oil is cold it is thicker so the valve by-passes the cooler, when it warms up and gets thinner and the oil pressure drops, the valve begins to route oil through the cooler and that's how it maintains a range of oil temp.
http://www.speedsterowners.com/topic/external-oil-cooler-by-...

Method of modifying engine oil cooling system
US 8505512 B2
:
The by-pass 100 will direct engine oil either to the heat exchanger 15 or, if the temperature or pressure conditions of the oil are within predetermined by-pass parameters, the oil will be by-passed around the heat exchanger 15 via line 130 to line 32.
https://www.google.ch/patents/US8505512

Engine oil cooler
US 8375917 B1
:
Accordingly, if engine oil is below a predetermined temperature or if a predetermined pressure differential exists between the inlet and outlet of oil 15 exceeding the setting of control valve 122, oil will be by-passed through by-pass 100 allowing the system oil temperature and pressure to build to acceptable levels due to engine operation. This typically may take 4 or 5 seconds after start up. The by-pass 100 lessens stress and wear on engine components due to oil conditions which reduce the effectiveness of the lubrication.
http://www.google.com/patents/US8375917

Another drawback in current art oil coolers and diverter apparatus is that, as equal amounts of oil are diverted to the oil cooler and by-passed back to the reservoir, the relatively excessive amount of oil pumped through the oil cooler at cold startup extends the period of time required for reaching the recommended operating temperature of the oil.
https://www.google.si/patents/US6955150

Hope this reference material is sufficient und understand the thermostatic valve function.
