Source text - Spanish Sueño, pesadilla, verdad. Para Grino esta serie se cumplió como si hubiera sido una promesa fiel, y no un sueño. Días antes se había despertado con un recuerdo fresco, aunque por entonces irreal: Las pequeñas piernas de Sela, que prefiguraban una belleza cierta y ejercían una atracción insólita teniendo en cuenta su edad, se malograban al chocar contra el piso. Los sueños nunca se conformaban, siempre querían más; según Grino no era suficiente con soñarlos, también debían tomar otra forma, un complemento de acción verdadera que los rescatara de la confusión de la misma noche. Pero entonces no sólo el sueño adquiría otro matiz; también, como en este caso la caída, los hechos reales se teñían de su luz nocturna, y de este modo exhibían una cualidad enigmática. Que un fruto se desplomara por la madurez de su propio peso obedecía al orden natural, pero que la niña se cayera del árbol después de haber soñado con su caída trasladaba toda la secuencia, incluso el escenario, como lo llamaría, a una dimensión fantástica: existían más causas para los mismos efectos. Grino se preguntaba por el poder de sus sueños: si anunciaban el acontecimiento o si también lo inducían. Un patio, algunas macetas, el árbol, la higuera, el típico piso de baldosas festoneadas, llenaban el escenario; al costado a unos tres metros, se levantaban los dormitorios, y más atrás, a un metro, semi oculta entre ramas y latas con retoños de futuras plantas, la alta balaustrada separaba el patio propiamente dicho del sitio donde se fregaba la ropa, el lavadero. Poco a poco Grino se había ido acostumbrando a los detalles de esta escenografía, donde naturalmente se ubicaba la niña como si fuera un elemento más; se le ocurrió darle el nombre de Sela apenas verla, el primer día de trabajo. Pocos movimientos necesitaba Sela para subir al árbol, pero lo hacía con lentitud. Alzaba y separaba las piernas de tal forma que Grino temía que en cualquier momento se abrieran, partiendo en dos su cuerpo delicado. Al rato Sela se perdía en la espesura, para aparecer un poco más arriba, sentada sobre una rama oscilante, donde permanecería durante horas, como los centinelas. En ese momento venían a la mente de Grino las fotografías de colegialas nadadoras, una al lado de otra sobre el borde de la “piscina cubierta”, con el cráneo de hule cubriendo la cabeza y las piernas al aire, a punto de inaugurar con su salto un campeonato organizado por el gobierno. De niño había observado esas revistas ilustradas, las había contemplado hasta sentirlas como algo consustancial a sí mismo; las fotografías con la hilera de cuerpos en primer plano sobre un fondo impreciso de oscuridad, donde se presumía que había personas pero bien podían ser sólo gradas, o incluso directamente nada. Como tampoco se veía el agua, las escolares parecían en pleno ritual, con sus manos juntas apuntando hacia abajo como si invocaran a un dios sumergido; por añadidura el título de la foto decía “Las niñas agradecen un sano desarrollo”. Viendo subir a Sela, Grino pensaba: Trepa como una nadadora. Así, sus piernas la recordaban los cuerpos de las escolares, pero con el agregado de que ahora poseían toda la fuerza oscura, amenazante y perentoria de la que en la infancia y bajo la forma de fotografías habían carecido.
Algo ocurre y el escenario se transforma. La detonación se produce puntual. Uno puede imaginarse el estruendo de piedras partidas, ramas quebradas, la explosión de la tierra que sólo termina cuando, paradójicamente, se ve que nada recupera su lugar original. Muchas veces se tiene la impresión de que los cambios en la naturaleza no perduran; aunque sean brutales, incluso violentos, sus efectos decantan rápido, se pliegan al paisaje general y enseguida vuelve también el silencio, que es cuando está todo listo para recomenzar. Sin embargo, cuando una tarde de años atrás las noticias informaron sobre cierta explosión en el medio del campo, más allá de las afueras de la cuidad, presentí que un aspecto de aquellos cambios –no un antes o un después, sino un quién, un cómo y un cuánto– desde ese momento sería menos evidente, pero más implacable, que las transformaciones del paisaje.
Era una llanura indolente, también intercambiable: hay infinitos campos parecidos. Sólo en la mente de los pobladores, en el recuerdo de los animales y en la memoria de esa gran extensión, hecha como se sabe de tierra, algunas piedras, plantas, agua y muy poco más, quedó flotando, como un ruido impaciente por acabar, el estallido. Pocas cosas hay en apariencia más gratuitas que detonar la intemperie, pero entonces lo macabro se disfrazaba de sinsentido o inocencia, también de cosa banal, reemplazado al verdadero rostro del terror. (Esto hacía que el peligro fuera una amenaza irracional, no tanto porque no pudiera caber en la cabeza de la gente, sino porque se desplegaba según una lógica que recurría a un orden desconocido para ponerse de manifiesto.) Aquella noticia hablaba de restos humanos esparcidos por una extensa superficie. Hay una palabra que lo describe muy bien: regados. Miembros regados, repartidos, ordenados en círculos imaginarios desde el centro inequívoco, la explosión. Hacia cualquier lado que uno fuese, todavía a cientos de metros podía toparse con rastros, que por otra parte ya no eran más que señales mudas, aptas tan sólo para el epílogo: los cuerpos deshechos después de haber sufrido, separados en trozos y dispersos.
Levanté la vista del diario y miré hacia la calle. Un taxi se detenía despacio, con afectada lentitud, no terminaba de frenar ni de moverse. Quise pensar en algo: así vamos por el tiempo, me dije, sin avanzar apenas. Pero aparte de las enseñanzas que se pudieran extraer de ello, la lentitud del taxi servía en primer lugar para que el pasajero se preparara. Finalmente el hombre pagó y el chofer tuvo al recibir el dinero una torsión excesiva, que me pareció demasiado solícita, en todo caso preconcebida. Y también uno podía sacar conclusiones de esto, pensé. Quiero decir que la vida proliferaba en hechos mientras las letras del diario ya eran algo detenido, que a su vez hablaba de un pasado a primera vista fatal, una cosa sobre la que no cabía abrigar esperanzas, etcétera. Mientras la vida aunada con el tiempo iba hacia adelante y se multiplicaba en sus infinitas ramificaciones y posibilidades, las noticias que cancelaban el pasado y nos dejaban sin esperanzas eran como la mueca cínica de lo porvenir, el llamado que nos advertía que lo blanco, por ejemplo, sería desde entonces bien oscuro.
Probablemente al igual que otros, en ese momento creí conocer aspectos que la noticia no mencionaba. En mi caso, la explosión tenía un pasado doloroso, que comenzaba con el secuestro de M (M de Miguel, o de Mauricio; también podría decir M de Daniel, ya que, como sabemos, detrás de las letras puede haber cualquier nombre.) Entre el secuestro y la noticia había un lapso de varios días, un lapso que ahora no me atrevo a calcular, en parte porque no estoy seguro de poder hacerlo: esos días no fueron días, era una interminable masa de tiempo, también insustancial y capaz de reproducirse sin término, que por esas crueles situaciones del destino, como a veces se dice, precisamente habría de encontrar en el diario de esa tarde la promesa de terminar, si no de completarse por lo menos de cesar, adquirir alguna forma y de esta manera quedar a la espera de un después.
Debo decir también que no tenía entonces, como no tengo ahora, forma de comprobar la presencia de M en la explosión. Pero tampoco estaba o estoy en condiciones de descartarla. Imaginarlo entre el grupo de muertos servía de poco, incluso no servía para nada; sin embargo era un pensamiento que se imponía una y otra vez a cualquier asociación: aquello antes palpitante, una forma particular de plenitud, o sea su figura, cuerpo, mezcla de líquidos, nervios o como se llame (una presencia habitual a la que el mundo se acostumbra y que todos dan por descontada, o sea la rutina de sobreentender la vida de la gente); aquello vivo hasta entonces de manera incansable, la vida orgánica de un cuerpo, ahora vaciado de sostén, tomaba la forma de una idea marcada por la necesidad, incluso la fatalidad.
El pozo abierto por el recuerdo de M sólo se cubrió poco a poco – los días, después las semanas y los años– con la desolación que deja la barbarie. Sin embargo, al revés de muchas otras circunstancias, los efectos del crimen no se borran de inmediato, tampoco en el mediano o largo plazo y más bien nunca. Un pátina mortuoria cubre el rostro de quienes quedaron vivos, las facciones se amoldan a una andanada de gestos inapropiados, emblemas o ejemplos de las caras ausentes, elocuentes como muecas precisamente porque los vivos, apabullados por la evidencia, optaron por la lasitud y el disimulo. (Ahora voy a hablar de mi país.) Nunca me abandonó el sentimiento, al caminar por cualquier sitio de la Argentina, y más precisamente por Buenos Aires, de hacerlo entre gente que, sorprendida ante su propio maridaje con la muerte, opta por el cinismo como forma de expiación (cuando es tan simple un arrepentimiento sincero).
Por ello, lo que sigue es una historia que no ha terminado. Quizá en el interior del mal exista la necesidad de completar las historias pendientes; cuando digo el interior del mal no me refiero a una complicidad más o menos inexorable, sino al hecho de que sus víctimas, aunque pertenezcan a la esfera del bien, ya por el hecho de ser víctimas ingresan también al otro circuito, el dominio del mal. Y como sabemos que el bien puede no terminar nunca, acaso en el interior del mal, a pesar de sí, se torne imperiosa la necesidad de acabar las historias. Quizá por eso recordé el secuestro de M en cuanto vi la noticia sobre la explosión. El intervalo entre ambos hechos significaba un ejercicio de pánico mental, imaginar la crueldad que sufrió hasta cuando, previo a la detonación igualadora, encontró el doble final que acabada con la vida y el horror. Frente al diario supuse que, después de esos días interminables, primaba de nuevo la razón – aunque una razón pueril y abominable –: se había consumado la aniquilación, de la cual era tributario el secuestro.
Leí la crónica tres veces, después me quedé pegado al título. Sería exagerado decir que pensaba en algo, aunque tampoco es cierto que no pensaba en nada. Si existe una etapa previa a la conformación del pensamiento, un momento en el que la conciencia intenta abrirse camino pero el mismo número de los detalles se lo impide, si existe esa etapa en la que los futuros pensamientos prefieren tomar la forma de un sueño, de un impulso sin voluntad, pasé por ella durante un tiempo demasiado largo, hasta que asusté al mozo con mi sobresalto cuando se acercó a vaciar el cenicero. El título decía “Explosión en P”. Fijé los ojos sin distinguir las letras, el papel cubierto por manchas de tinta sin concierto, como cuando uno frente al espejo ve más el espejo que su rostro. La crónica decía que durante horas los lugareños escucharon motores de camiones, acelerar y detenerse; unos ruidos inusuales que sin embargo no llamaron la atención. (Si hubiera sido de día habrían visto algo, pero siendo la noche todo parecía comprensible; la noche corporiza lo clandestino, una vieja noción que en este caso sirvió para desentenderse.) Un despliegue de obra pública, algo que hacía pensar en cuadrillas viales, eso parecía escucharse. Había motores que se ponían a trabajar en el límite de su potencia; mientras tanto, algo pesado se balanceaba y golpeaba contra cosas metálicas. A veces se oía el fluir de las piedras, como si fuera un poco de agua sólida y estridente, que se volcaban en la superficie desde los camiones. La actividad después se iría reduciendo, poco a poco cesaría el ruido, hasta que, aproximadamente en la mitad de la noche, todo parecía haber vuelto al curso indiferente de lo normal. Y sin embargo, la acción estaba avanzando, como se vería enseguida, a un ritmo todavía más veloz. Olvidados de los camiones, todos se sorprendieron ante el estallido. Hasta la noche siguiente cundió el silencio. (Este silencio era una señal, de haberlo expresado con gestos habría sido una mueca, una forma de aludir a la falta de explicaciones y también una manera de disculpar la violencia. Las caras de la gente.)
Un silencio no tan prologado y enigmático como el que adoptaron los padres de M. Pese a su elocuencia, que no condescendía a pronunciar palabras, un silencio hecho de gestos enfáticos como mazazos. El sentido de este silencio se me escapaba, y varias veces traté en vano de descubrirlo. Podría decirse así: La ausencia del hijo producía un vacío, los padres hacían su vida recluidos en un globo de cristal, contra cuya superficie chocaban las señales del exterior. Pero dada la transparencia del encierro, ese interior era visible para todo el mundo, aunque los padres de M estuvieran persuadidos, y obraran en consecuencia, de estar habitando la cara oculta de un planeta, su angustia. Entonces se sentían tranquilos en su dolor y consolados por la misma desesperación. El entorno, esa cosa abstracta que uno suele definir como “los demás”, “las cosas en general” o directamente “el mundo”, que hasta ese momento había resultado casi siempre adverso, ahora, con lo ocurrido a M, se presentaba abiertamente hostil. Y frente a tanta adversidad, como una forma de protegerse, ellos preferían borrarse, hacerse transparentes. Pero la verdad era que estaban siendo observados, incluso con más atención que en otras épocas.
Yo me admiraba de que el drama, tan estridente, fuera para ellos silencioso. No se trató del clásico mundo hermético que se impone, a veces, después de las tragedias, un autismo convalidado por las víctimas; tampoco fue la brecha de miedo y autocompasión abierta por los amigos. Más palpable, era el triste silencio tras el que su familia tendía a ocultarse, como si cada cual cumpliera con un papel prefijado y consabido, religioso, proveniente del fondo de la historia. Pero esta obediencia, como no sólo derivaba de una convicción, sino también de la naturaleza, se revelaba sobre un fondo de confusión. Así, pese a no escucharlo, el estallido que había acabado con el hijo todavía seguía aturdiéndolos, pensé en el bar, más bien una pizzería, sobre la que entonces era la avenida Canning. Los seguía aturdiendo. Como las piedras en el estanque, las ondas de la explosión alcanzaron a los miembros de la familia de M, y mientras se desplegaban, en lugar de debilitarse, como habría ocurrido en otra circunstancia, esas ondas al contrario aumentaban su fuerza. Así, entre todos los riesgos que podía implicar acercarse a la casa de M, una de las aventuras más amargas significaba admitir, antes sus padres y hermanos, aunque nada se dijera sobre ello, que el azar había estado del lado de los amigos, o sea, de nuestro lado, y no del suyo. Esa casualidad patrocinada por el mal nos trastornaba como deudos y nos convertía en deudores. M era el mártir, pero no porque su sacrificio estuviera dirigido a nuestra salvación sino porque su desaparición era nuestra marca. Por esto hay días en que pienso en él como si fuera una divinidad, le asigno poderes excesivos para cualquier recuerdo, venero su memoria; y si bien poco a poco su existencia me va resultando difusa, o muy abstracta, continúa siendo el hecho más vivo, cierto e inmediato.
Rehenes de la geografía, nuestro pasado transcurre bajo el influjo de la cuidad. Esa ciudad antigua sigue siendo nuestro umbral. Una trama abigarrada de rectas y atajos, con ángulos abiertos hasta la exageración, de una amplitud inaudita, se impuso como el escenario de nuestros recorridos. Pero la superficie concreta, vehemente como una costra de asfalto y cemento, también llamada por convención la real, con la falta de M pasó a tener una existencia devaluada, sombra y reflejo demorados sobre la otra, la dibujada en el pasado. El presente verdadero se alejaba y las cosas concretas de la cuidad, levantadas con sustancias que se endurecen al fraguar y resisten el tiempo, ahora se disolvían en un núcleo de desorden. Esta dispersión de la cuidad, que únicamente dejaba en pie las marcas que hablaban de nosotros dos, y por lo tanto poniendo todavía más en evidencia la falta de M, me trastornó durante varios meses y también me dejó sin habla. Era otro el que podía hablar, no yo. Por semanas los días no pasaron; al caminar, por ejemplo, sentía la presencia de un poder remoto, previo a cualquier origen, que no me dejaba saber hacia dónde iba. Y lo mismo ocurría en cada circunstancia. Sin embargo la cuidad no estaba vacía, la habitaban sus gentes, quienes seguían hablando como si nada hubiera pasado. De sus bocas podían salir cosas como “Los 100 barrios porteños”, “La reina del Plata”, y varias fórmulas por el estilo. Estas expresiones mostraban, para mí, tanto como las más explícitas, el equívoco y el disimulo generalizados. Nada se escapaba, no había desperdicio, a su modo los muertos también contribuían con el escenario, aunque sólo fuera para darles la espalda. Todo aquello era una masa verbal en la que si se convocaba el recuerdo de los habitantes era para triturarlo.
Conoció a M cuando ambos dejaban la infancia. Varios años antes del secuestro sellaron, con un clásico rito de confirmación, la amistad: intercambiaron sus retratos. (Más profundo que una moda, pero menos arraigado que una costumbre, los jóvenes eran entonces de un sentimentalismo particular, donde se mezclaban inclinaciones expresivas y actitudes contestatarias –también heterodoxas. Si bien esto puede decirse de la juventud en general, en esa época la tendencia se dirigía también a la unificación de los gustos, opiniones e ideas. Muchas veces hablaron sobre si podían considerarse alcanzados por el influjo colectivo; eran jóvenes, aunque también extranjeros; eran anfibios. Habitantes de una segunda naturaleza, asumían algunas de esas creencias con un aire que de inmediato los revelaba impropios, leve o ásperamente desajustados –dependiendo del caso.) El retrato de M era el detalle ampliado de una foto sacada en la calle Humberto 1 –en el barrio de San Telmo. El volumen expandido de su cara borronea las facciones, el grano grueso del papel sugiere una expresión dramática, también menos espontánea, y en la boca abierta se distingue su proverbial marca, el hueco de un incisivo ausente. Un poco por efecto de la ampliación y otro poco por su gesto, la cara está a punto de convertirse en mueca, aunque sin conseguirlo debido a la misma circunstancia que produce el efecto, la falsa proximidad de la cámara.
Antes de entregármela, M escribió en la parte de atrás, a manera de título o emblema, “Azotado por el viento”. Di vuelta la foto y lo vi: estaba subido a una verja y se aferraba a los barrotes como si, justamente, estuviera siendo azotado por el viento. En tren de representar, otro en lugar suyo habría actuado como si debajo hubiera un precipicio o como si esperara del lado infortunado de la reja; pero M había elegido lo menos posible, algo impreciso y de representación incierta. Así, de todas las situaciones imaginables, su rostro aludía a la violencia de las ráfagas y la manera de sostenerse, aunque los barrotes apenas se vieran, hablaba de la fuerza insólita del viento.
Translation - English Dream, nightmare, truth. For Grino this series played itself out as if it were a portent and not a dream. According to Grino dreams were never satisfied; they always wanted more. It wasn’t enough to just dream dreams. Sela only needed a few movements to get up the tree but she did it very slowly. The way that she raised and spread her legs made Grino fear that at any moment her legs would open and split her delicate body in two. A while later Sela was lost in the dense foliage only to reappear a little higher up sitting on a swaying branch where she would remain for hours, like a watchman. At that moment Grino remembered photographs of the schoolgirl swimmers, lined up along the edge of the indoor pool, with swimming caps covering their heads and legs exposed, ready to dive in and inaugurate a competition organized by the government. As a boy he had looked at picture magazines, he had poured over the magazines until they felt like part of himself – the photographs of the row of bodies in the forefront superimposed on a dark, blurry background where presumably there were some people or maybe only bleachers, or even nothing. Since you couldn’t see the water either it looked as though the schoolgirls were in the middle of some ritual with their hands clasped and pointing downwards as if they were invoking an underwater god; in addition, the title of the photo said “the girls are grateful for their wholesome development.” Watching Sela climb, Grino thought: she climbs like a swimmer. Her legs reminded him of the bodies of the schoolgirls; but now with the added factor that they possessed a dark, threatening and urgent force that was lacking in both his childhood and in the pictures.
Something happens and the scene changes. The detonation happened right on time. One can imagine the roar of stones splitting and branches breaking, the explosion of earth that only ends when, paradoxically, one can see that nothing is returning to its original place. Much of the time we are under the impression that changes in nature do not last; although they may be brutal, even violent, their effects settle down quickly, they roll over the general landscape and the silence immediately returns, and that is when all is ready to begin again. However, one afternoon years ago when the news announced a certain explosion in the middle of the countryside beyond the city's suburbs, I intuited something about those changes – not the before or after but the who, how and how much – that from that moment on would be less evident, yet more implacable, than the transformations of the landscape.
It was an idle plain, interchangeable with an infinite number of similar fields as well. Only in the minds of the settlers, in the memory of the animals and of that great extension, composed, as we know, of earth, some stones, plants, water and not much more, the explosion was left floating, like a noise rushing to the finish. Apparently few things are more gratuitous than to set off a bomb in the middle of nowhere, but at that time the macabre was disguised as senselessness or innocence, or as some banal thing, covering over the true face of terror. This made danger an irrational threat, not so much because people couldn’t wrap their minds around it, but because it came about according to a foreign logic. The news spoke of human remains spread about over an extensive surface. Scattered limbs, spread out in imaginary ripples from the unequivocal center, the explosion. Wherever you went, even up to a hundred meters away you could come upon traces, that were already in a way no more than mute signs, suitable only for an epilogue - the destroyed bodies after the suffering separated into pieces and dispersed.
I looked up from the newspaper and towards the street. A taxi was slowly stopping with affected sluggishness, neither braking nor accelerating. I tried to think about something: that's how we move through time, I told myself, just barely advancing. But besides the lessons that could be learned from this, the slowness of the taxi also allowed the passenger to get ready. Finally the man paid, and when the taxi driver accepted the money he bent over excessively; this seemed overly forced, almost meditated. You could also draw conclusions about this, I thought. I mean that life is full of happenings while the letters of the words printed in the newspaper were already something frozen in time and spoke, in turn, of an apparently inevitable past, something on which you could not pin your hopes, etc. While life was joined with time, it moved forward and multiplied into infinite ramifications and possibilities; the news cancelled the past and left us hopeless. They were a sneer from the future, warning that, for example, white from then on would be very dark.
Probably like many others at that time I believed I knew things that the news was not mentioning. In my case, the explosion had a painful past that began with the kidnapping of M (M as in Miguel, or Mauricio, or it could also be the M of Daniel because, as we already know, any name can lie behind letters). Between the kidnapping and the news there was a lapse of a few days, I don’t dare calculate that lapse now, partially because I'm not sure that I am capable of doing so: those days were not days; it was an unending mass of time, insubstantial and capable of reproducing itself without end. Some say that in the midst of these cruel situations, given to us by the hand of fate, you simply need to find in the afternoon newspaper a promise that it will all end, or at least subside, or take on another shape so then you could hold out for an afterwards.
I must also say that I did not have then nor do I have now a way to prove M's presence at the explosion. But neither was I nor am I able to rule it out as a possibility. Imagining him among a group of the dead was not of much use, in fact it was entirely useless, nevertheless, it was a thought that imposed itself again and again by any random association: that throbbing, a certain form of plenitude, or his figure maybe, his body, a mixture of liquids, nerves or whatever it’s called (a habitual presence the world is used to, what goes without saying and everyone takes for granted; the routine of assuming people’s lives); that thing living persistently until then, the organic life of a body, now robbed of any support, assumed the form of an idea marked by necessity, even fatality.
The well opened by the memory of M was covered over very slowly – days, then, weeks and years – with the desolation that barbarism leaves in its wake. However, unlike in many other circumstances, the effects of crime are not erased immediately, not in the short or long term, more likely never. A deathly patina covers the faces of those still alive, their features had been molded into a wealth of inappropriate expressions, emblems or examples of absent faces – these grimaces spoke eloquently of the survivors who, bewildered by the evidence, chose to feign fatigue and uphold a pretense. (Now I am going to speak about my country.) While walking about any place in Argentina, or more precisely in Buenos Aires, I’m never free of the feeling that the people around me are surprised by their own marriage to death and opt for cynicism as a form of making amends (when sincere regret is so simple).
Due to all this, the following is an unfinished story. Perhaps evil has a deep need to complete stories left hanging - and when I say deep need I’m not referring to a more or less inexorable urge, but rather to the fact that evil’s victims, although they belong to the sphere of the good, by the mere fact of being victims are also taken into another circle, the domain of evil. And, even though we know that good can never end, except maybe inside evil, in spite of this, the need to complete stories becomes imperative. Perhaps this is why I remembered M's kidnapping as soon as I saw the news about the explosion. The interval between the events was an exercise of mental panic, imagining the cruelty that he must have suffered until then, before the detonation that leveled everything. He met what would finish off both his life and the horror. Looking at the newspaper, I supposed that, after those endless days, reason was again prevailing – although an abominable and childish reason: it had consumed the annihilation and its tributary, the kidnapping.
I read the article three times; afterwards I became fixated on the title. I would be exaggerating if I said I was thinking about something; but neither was I thinking about nothing. If there exists a phase before the formation of a thought, a moment in which the consciousness tries to open itself up but the very number of details impedes this, if this phase exists in which future thoughts prefer to take on the form of a dream, an impulse without will, I stayed in this phase too long, until the waiter came to empty the ashtray and startled me and I, in turn, scared him. The title said "Explosion in P." I fixed my eyes on the title without being able to distinguish the letters, the paper covered in disordered ink stains, like when you look at a mirror and you see more of the mirror than your face. The article said that for hours the locals heard truck motors accelerate and stop, some unusual noises, but nevertheless this did not catch anyone's attention. (If it had been daytime they would have seen something, but since it was nighttime everything seemed normal; the night embodies the clandestine, an old notion that in this case helps people to evade responsibility.) A public works project, something that made you think of work crews, that’s what it sounded like. There were motors running at full throttle; meanwhile something heavy was swinging and beating against metal. Sometimes you could hear a stream of stones being dumped gratingly from the trucks and rushing at full pressure onto the surface as if it were water. Later, the activity diminished, and slowly the noise subsided, until about midnight, everything appeared to have returned to the indifferent routine of the normal. However, as would soon be seen, action was still going on at an even faster rhythm. Having forgotten about the trucks, everyone was surprised by the explosion. The silence spread out into the following night. (This silence was a sign; if it had been a facial expression it would have a grimace, a way of alluding to the lack of explanations and also a way of excusing the violence. The faces of the people.)
A silence that was not as prolonged and enigmatic as the one that M's parents adopted. The eloquence of this silence that would not deign to use words, a silence made of the direct blows of a hammer. Its meaning was beyond me, I tried several times in vain to comprehend it. It could be explained like this: The absence of their son produced an emptiness; the parents confined their lives to a crystal ball, and external events crashed against its surface. But given the transparency of their confinement, the interior was visible to everyone, even though M's parents were convinced that and acted as if they were living on the dark side of a planet – their very own anguish. So they felt calm in their pain and consoled by their own desperation. The environment, that abstract thing that tends to be called "the rest of them", "things in general", or more directly "the world", which had been until then almost always adverse, now because of what happened to M, appeared to be openly hostile. In the face of so much adversity they choose to erase themselves as a form of protection, to become transparent. But the truth was they were being observed with even more attention than at other times.
I was astonished that a drama so grating was for them so silent. This wasn’t a classic case of hermitism that is often imposed after tragedies, an autism allowed by the victims; nor was it the breach of fear and empathy opened by friends. More palpable was the sad silence behind which his family tended to hide; as if each one were fulfilling a predetermined and well-rehearsed role, almost a religious one, originating in the depths of history. But this compulsion derived not only from conviction but also nature, and it stood out against a background of confusion. So, in spite of not hearing the explosion that had done away with their son, it still stunned them, I thought in the bar, or actually the pizzeria, over which Canning Avenue once ran. It kept bewildering them. Like the waves when a stone is thrown in a pond, the waves of the explosion reached the members of M's family, rippling out from the center and growing stronger instead of growing weaker, as normally happens. Of all the risks associated with going to M’s house, the most biting was the chance that you would have to admit to his parents and siblings that, although it was never mentioned, luck had been on the side of his friends, that is our side, and not on theirs. This chance set up by evil troubled us like a debt and made us into debtors. M was a martyr, not because his sacrifice was intended for our salvation, but because his disappearance marked us. This is why some days I think of him as if he were a divinity, I assign him powers that exceed those I remember, I venerate his memory, and even if his existence is growing more diffuse, or very abstract, it will remain what is most alive, certain, and immediate to me.
As hostages of geography, our past transpires under the influence of the city. This old city continues to be our threshold. A jumbled weave of straight lines and short cuts, at exaggerated, wide angles imposed itself upon us as the backdrop of our ramblings. But the concrete surface, exactly like a crust of asphalt and cement, also called by convention “the real”, with the absence of M came to have a devalued existence, a shade and reflection held up over the other one, the one drawn in the past. The true present grew more distant and the city’s concrete objects, composed of substances that harden with forging and resist time, were now dissolving into a nucleus of disorder. This dispersion of the city – which left standing only our personal markings, and therefore made even more evident M's absence, disturbed me for several months and left me unable to speak. It was another who could speak, not me. For weeks the days did not pass. While walking, for example, I felt the presence of a remote power, preceding any origin, that didn’t let me see where I was going. This was always the case. However, the city was not empty, people inhabited it and kept on talking as if nothing had happened. "The one hundred barrios of Buenos Aires," "The Queen of the River Plate" and other similar formulas came out of their mouths. For me these expressions, as well as more explicit ones, pointed to a generalized misunderstanding and pretense. Nothing went to waste, in their own way the dead contributed to the scene if only just by turning their backs. All of this was a verbal mass that summoned up the memory of the city’s inhabitants, but only to crush it.
He met M when both were leaving behind their childhood days. Several years before the kidnapping they consecrated their friendship with a classic rite of confirmation: they exchanged photographs. (Young people then possessed a particular sentimentalism, more profound than a trend but less old-fashioned than a tradition, that combined self-expression and abrasive attitudes – also unorthodox. This could very well be said about youth in general, at this time they also tended toward unifying their tastes, opinions and ideas. They often talked about whether they might be affected by some collective influence; they were young, though also foreigners; they were amphibious. Possessing a second nature they assumed some beliefs with in a way that immediately revealed them to be inappropriate, slightly or glaringly unsuitable – depending on the case.) The portrait of M was an enlargement of part of another photograph taken on Humberto 1 Street – in the San Telmo neighborhood. The enlargement blurred the features of his face, the rough grain of the paper suggested a dramatic expression, not very spontaneous either, and, his gaping mouth appeared as a black hole – a missing incisor, his proverbial mark). Partly because of the enlargement's effect and because of his expression, his face was just about to turn into a grimace, although it fell just short of doing so because of the very circumstance that produced the effect, the camera's false proximity.
Before giving the photo to me, M wrote on the back of it a sort of title or emblem, "Whipped by the wind." I turned it over and saw him: he was up on a railing and gripped the bars exactly as if he were being whipped around by the wind. Anyone else in his place, striking a pose there, would have pretended there was a cliff below or to be waiting on the wrong side of the bars, but M had chosen to do the least probable, an indistinct and vague position. So of all imaginable situations, his face alluded to the violence of the gusts of wind, and the way he held on, even though you could barely see the bars, spoke of the wind's unsuspected force.

1. INTRODUCCIÓN
Los sistemas de medición del rendimiento basados en indicadores no financieros constituyen la respuesta de la contabilidad de gestión a la demanda empresarial de sistemas de medición, distintos de los tradicionales, que permitan gestionar algunas variables que hoy día se consideran claves para la toma de decisiones estratégicas en la empresa (Kaplan, 1984).
La percepción de algunas limitaciones de las tradicionales medidas del rendimiento, en concreto, su excesivo énfasis en el corto plazo y su escasa integración con las metas estratégicas de la empresa (Maskell, 1989; Dent, 1990), ha motivado el creciente interés de la literatura por los indicadores no financieros (Vaivio, 1999). Su desarrollo, tanto a nivel académico como empresarial, se ha sustentado en el reconocimiento de la capacidad que tienen para realizar mediciones sobre aspectos tales como la satisfacción de los clientes, la flexibilidad o la productividad (McNair et al., 1990), más acordes con las nuevas necesidades de las empresas en el entorno económico actual.
En la literatura empírica basada en la teoría de la contingencia se ha demostrado la conveniencia de utilizar indicadores no financieros para gestionar la estrategia empresarial. Algunos estudios comprueban las circunstancias ante las cuales las empresas muestran un mayor interés por el uso de tales indicadores, entre ellas la implantación de estrategias diferenciadoras, esto es, orientadas hacia aspectos tales como la flexibilidad y la descentralización (Abernethy y Lillis, 1995), las orientadas hacia la innovación (Hoque, 2004), o hacia la calidad (Daniel y Reitsperger, 1991; Perera et al. 1997). En general, la utilidad de los indicadores no financieros para gestionar estrategias basadas en la calidad ha sido demostrada en las investigaciones realizadas al respecto, justificándose su capacidad para mejorar continuamente los resultados de la calidad (Daniel y Reitsperger, 1991), y para mejorar los resultados que derivan de gestionar una producción orientada hacia el cliente (Perera et al. 1997).
Desde esta aproximación de estudio, también se sugiere que el tamaño de las empresas debe afectar a la forma en la que éstas diseñan y utilizan los sistemas de gestión (Lawrence y Lorsch, 1967; Burns y Stalker, 1961). En el sentido de que las empresas de mayor tamaño requieren elaborar unos sistemas de medición que les permitan controlar un rango de aspectos más amplio que aquel que tienen que controlar las empresas de menor tamaño (Kaplan y Atkinson, 1998). Si bien algunos estudios han demostrado que el uso de un sistema de medición sofisticado, como el Balanced Scorecard, no depende del tamaño de la empresa (Kaplan y Norton, 1996), también se ha llegado a conclusiones diferentes en otras investigaciones, ya que Hoque y James (2000) evidencian que las empresas de mayor tamaño es más probable que hagan un mayor uso de un sistema de gestión que incluye indicadores no financieros de medición.
Todo lo anterior nos ha llevado a plantear un estudio cuyo objetivo se basa en analizar cómo incide el interés por la calidad, manifestado éste en el reconocimiento de calidad ISO 9000 que poseen las empresas, sobre la utilización de indicadores no financieros de medición, comprobando además, si hay una relación entre el uso de indicadores y el tamaño empresarial, y si dicha relación se mantiene en todas las empresas independientemente de su interés por la calidad. Con este trabajo que analiza conjuntamente la existencia de relaciones entre el uso de los indicadores y las variables contingentes: tamaño y calidad, se pretende aportar más evidencia empírica sobre el rol de las nuevas prácticas de los sistemas de gestión, necesaria según Chenhall (2003) en los entornos actuales.
Para llevar a cabo el desarrollo empírico del trabajo nos hemos basado en el sector industrial del mueble en España. Con ello pretendemos profundizar en el conocimiento y en la relación de las variables mencionadas, dentro de en un sector industrial distinto a los estudiados hasta el momento, y en un ámbito geográfico también diferente. Teniendo en cuenta que la percepción de los directivos sobre la importancia de los indicadores puede diferir en función del contexto de actividad en el que la empresa opera, en este trabajo se ha desarrollado, a partir del instrumento propuesto por Perera et al. (1997), una escala capaz de medir el uso de los indicadores, de una forma fiable y válida.
Con este objetivo de investigación, estructuramos el trabajo de la siguiente forma: a partir de esta introducción, en el siguiente apartado se revisan las principales contribuciones contingentes de estudio de los indicadores, a partir de las cuales se plantean las hipótesis de investigación; en el siguiente apartado se describe la metodología empleada en la investigación y las variables objeto de estudio; seguidamente se corrobora la fiabilidad y validez de la escala de medida de los indicadores; a continuación se presentan los resultados de contrastar las hipótesis propuestas; para terminar se exponen las conclusiones más relevantes del estudio.
2. REVISIÓN DE LA LITERATURA
Bajo la teoría de la contingencia se argumenta que los sistemas de gestión contables deberían diseñarse atendiendo a la estrategia específica de cada organización (Otley, 1980). Dicho de otra forma, los sistemas de medición del rendimiento juegan un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de los planes estratégicos, ya que se vinculan con los objetivos y metas estratégicas que contribuyen a la creación de valor empresarial (Ittner y Larcker, 1998). En este sentido, la estrategia basada en la filosofía de la gestión de la calidad ha promovido un extenso interés por el uso de los indicadores no financieros, debido a que los tradicionales indicadores financieros, orientados hacia el corto plazo, no pueden reflejar todos los beneficios derivados de las mejoras provenientes de la citada estrategia (Albright y Roth, 1993; Fuentes, 1996).
Dentro de las investigaciones que consideran la estrategia como la variable contingente central, algunas de ellas han dirigido sus esfuerzos hacia el estudio de estrategias diferenciadoras o prospectivas, es decir, aquellas orientadas hacia los factores claves del éxito empresarial (Abernethy y Lillis, 1995; Hoque, 2004; Ittner y Larcker, 1997; Perera et al. 1997; Abdel-Maksoud et al. 2005). En general, el logro de las estrategias diferenciadoras exige el uso de unos sistemas de control de los resultados muy flexibles. Siguiendo a Hoque (2004, p. 488), en las empresas que formulan este tipo de estrategias, el uso de indicadores financieros puede contribuir a que los directivos presten menor atención a los factores críticos del éxito, tales como la calidad, la fiabilidad, el servicio, la innovación, la atención de las necesidades del cliente, o el tiempo; la implantación de estas estrategias debería acompañarse con un mayor uso de indicadores no financieros.
Con relación a las estrategias orientadas hacia la calidad, en sus distintas conceptualizaciones, las principales investigaciones han demostrado empíricamente la utilidad de los indicadores no financieros para gestionar este tipo de estrategias. Los resultados del análisis llevado a cabo por Daniel y Reitsperger (1991) ya pusieron de manifiesto que las empresas que siguen una estrategia de calidad basada en cero defectos, han cambiado sus sistemas de control de gestión con el fin de aumentar las mejoras continuas en la calidad, que son a la vez la clave de esta estrategia. Asimismo, la relación positiva entre las estrategias de calidad centradas en el cliente, como aproximación de prácticas de gerencia y tecnología avanzadas, y la utilización de indicadores no financieros también ha sido demostrada por Perera et al. (1997). En este sentido, Najmi y Kehoe (2000) proponen un modelo de desarrollo de la calidad, que incluye, desde la implantación de las normas ISO hasta la aplicación de prácticas más avanzadas, mostrando relaciones positivas entre el desarrollo de las prácticas de calidad y la utilización de sistemas de medición que incluyen indicadores no financieros de control. La adopción de prácticas de gestión de la calidad también está asociada con una mayor utilización de indicadores no financieros, tal como muestra más recientemente el estudio de Abdel-Maksoud et al. (2005). Aunque Carr et al. (1997) no encontraron diferencias significativas en las prácticas de gestión analizadas entre empresas certificadas y no certificadas, sí concluyeron la mayor utilización de medidas de la calidad en las empresas certificadas ISO 9000.
Si bien no hemos encontrado trabajos que relacionen directamente los indicadores no financieros y la ISO 9000, apoyándonos en las premisas descritas en los párrafos anteriores proponemos la primera hipótesis del estudio:
Hipótesis 1: las empresas comprometidas con la calidad utilizan los indicadores no financieros en mayor medida que las empresas no comprometidas.
Por otra parte, la teoría de la contingencia de las organizaciones también sugiere que el tamaño de las empresas debe afectar a la forma en la que éstas diseñan y utilizan los sistemas de gestión (Lawrence y Lorsch, 1967; Burns y Stalker, 1961). A medida que las empresas aumentan su tamaño, sus operaciones se hacen más complejas y los problemas de comunicación y control requieren una mayor atención (Merchant, 1984). En este sentido, numerosos estudios contables sugieren que en empresas de mayor tamaño se tiende a utilizar unos procesos contables y de gestión más especializados y sofisticados (Libby y Waterhouse, 1996; Ezzamel, 1990).
De la misma forma, el incremento en el grado de estructuración y de descentralización de las actividades, debido en parte al aumento de tamaño en las empresas (Burns y Stalker, 1961), pone de manifiesto la necesidad de una adecuada comunicación, y por tanto, de unos adecuados sistemas de información y control. En consecuencia, las empresas de mayor tamaño requieren elaborar unos sistemas de información y medición que les permitan controlar un amplio rango de aspectos (Kaplan y Atkinson, 1998). A este respecto, centrando su estudio sobre el sistema de gestión Balanced Scorecard, que contiene indicadores financieros y no financieros de medición, Hoque y James (2000) evidencian una relación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre el tamaño y el uso de este sistema de gestión. Tal como defienden y demuestran estos autores, las empresas de mayor tamaño es más probable que hagan un mayor uso de un sistema de gestión que incluye indicadores no financieros de medición. Bajo estos planteamientos, proponemos la segunda hipótesis de investigación:
Hipótesis 2: las empresas de mayor tamaño utilizan los indicadores no financieros en mayor medida que las empresas más pequeñas.

1. Introduction
The production measurement systems based on non-financial indicators constitute accounting management’s response to businesses’ demands for measurement systems, different from the traditional ones, that allow for the management of several variables considered today to be keys in strategic business decisions (Kaplan, 1984).
Spurred by the observation of limitations in traditional production measurement, specifically, its excessive emphasis on the short term and its poor integration of strategic business goals, (Maskell, 1989; Dent, 1990), interest has grown in the literature about non-financial indicators (Vaivio, 1999). This development, in academic and business fields, is further maintained by the recognition that these new systems are able to measure aspects such as customer satisfaction, flexibility, and productivity (McNair et al., 1990) that better suit the new needs of businesses in today’s economic environment.
The empirical literature based on contingency theory has demonstrated the benefits of utilizing non-financial indicators to manage business strategies. Various studies determine the circumstances in which businesses exhibit a greater interest in non-financial indicators, including the implementation of differentiating strategies, such as those oriented towards aspects such as flexibility and decentralization (Abernethy and Lillis, 1995), innovation (Hoque, 2004), or quality (Daniel and Reitsperger, 1991; Perera et al. 1997). Overall, such studies have established the value of non-financial indicators for managing strategies based on quality, illustrating their ability to continually bolster quality results (Daniel and Reitsperger, 1991), and to improve the results derived from production management oriented towards the customer (Perera et al. 1997).
From this investigative perspective also arises the possibility of business size affecting the way a business designs and uses such management systems (Lawrence y Lorsch, 1967; Burns and Stalker, 1961). Essentially, larger businesses must elaborate measurement systems that allow them to control a wider range of aspects than smaller businesses do (Kaplan and Atkinson, 1998). While some studies show that the use of a sophisticated measurement system, such as balanced scorecard, does not depend upon business size (Kaplan and Norton, 1996), other investigations reach different conclusions. For example, Hoque and James (2000) prove that bigger businesses are more likely to employ a management system that involves measuring non-financial indicators.
The context described above has led us to propose a study analyzing how an interest in quality, exhibited by the quality accreditation ISO 9000, affects the measurement of non-financial indicators, while also investigating a possible relation between the use of such indicators and business size, and if this relation is maintained amongst all businesses regardless of its interest in quality. Using this two-fold analysis of the existence of a relationship between the use of non-financial indicators and the contingent variables: size and quality, this research seeks to offer more empirical evidence about the role of the new practices in systems management, which according to Chenhall (2003) has become essential in the current conditions.
To conduct the empirical development of this study we have selected the industrial sector of furniture in Spain. With this selection, we plan to explore the knowledge base and relationships of the aforementioned variables, within an industrial sector different from those studied until now, and also in a different geographical location. Since managers´ perceptions of the importance of non-financial indicators can vary depending on the operating context of their business, this investigation has developed, based on the instrument proposed by Perera et al. (1997), a scale capable of measuring the use of the indicators in a valid and reliable form.
With this investigative objective, we have structured this article in the following form: following this introduction, the next section revises the principal contingent contributions in the study of the non-financial indicators, and building on these the present investigation we proposes our own hypotheses; the next section describes the methodology employed and the variables monitored; then the reliability and validity of the indicators measurement scale are corroborated; next the results are presented in comparison with the proposed hypotheses; and finally the most relevant conclusions are expounded.
2. Literature Review
According to contingency theory, accounting management systems should be designed taking into consideration the specific strategy of each organization (Otley, 1980). In other words, performance management systems play a fundamental role in the development of strategic plans since they are bound to the objectives and strategic goals that contribute to the creation of business value (Ittner and Larcker, 1998). Therefore, the strategy based on the quality management philosophy has fostered great interest in the use of non-financial indicators, due to the fact that traditional financial indicators, focused on the short term, cannot reflect the benefits derived from the improvements accomplished with the cited strategy (Albright and Roth, 1993; Fuentes, 1996).
Amongst the studies that consider the strategy as the principal contingent variable, some have concentrated their efforts on the analysis of differentiating strategies or prospects, that is, those oriented toward the key factors of business success (Abernethy and Lillis, 1995; Hoque , 2004, Ittner and Larcker, 1997, Perera et al. 1997; Abdel-Maksoud et al. 2005). In general, in order to maximize the benefits of differentiating strategies, the use of control systems with flexible results is imperative. According to Hoque (2004, p. 488), in companies that follow these strategies, the use of financial indicators can lead managers to pay less attention to the critical success factors, such as quality, reliability, service, innovation, customer service or time. Thus, the implementation of these strategies should be accompanied by greater use of non-financial indicators.
Regarding quality-oriented strategies, including its various conceptualizations, the principal research has empirically demonstrated the importance of non-financial indicators in managing this type of strategy. The results of the analysis, conducted by Daniel and Reitsperger (1991), already reveal that firms following a quality strategy based on zero defects, have changed their management control systems in order to continually enhance quality, which is key to this strategy. Also, the positive relationship between the strategies of customer-focused quality, as an approach for management practices and advanced technology, and the use of non-financial indicators is also displayed by Perera et al. (1997). To this effect, Najmi and Kehoe (2000) propose a model for quality development that includes practices ranging from from the implementation of ISO standards, to the application of more advanced practices, exhibiting positive relationships between the development of quality practices and the use of measurement systems that include non-financial indicators. The adoption of quality management practices is also associated with a greater use of non-financial indicators, as illustrated more recently by the study of Abdel-Maksoud et al. (2005). Although Carr et al. (1997) finds no significant differences between management practices in quality-certified versus uncertified firms, they did confirm an increase in use of measures of quality in ISO 9000 certified companies.
Since we have not found studies directly relating non-financial indicators and the ISO 9000, based on the premises described in the preceding paragraphs, we propose the first hypothesis of the study:
Hypothesis 1: Companies committed to quality utilize non-financial indicators more than companies that are not committed.
Moreover, the contingency theory of organizations indicates that firm size should affect the way businesses design and use management systems (Lawrence and Lorsch, 1967, Burns and Stalker, 1961). As enterprises increase their size, their operations become more complex, and communication problems and control require more attention (Merchant, 1984). In this regard, numerous accounting studies suggest that larger companies tend to use more specialized and sophisticated management and accounting processes (Libby and Waterhouse, 1996; Ezzamel, 1990).
Similarly, the increase in the degree of structuring and decentralization of activities, due in part to an increase in business size (Burns and Stalker, 1961), highlights the need for proper communication, and therefore adequate information and control systems. Consequently, larger companies need to develop information and measurement systems that enable them to control a wider range of factors (Kaplan and Atkinson, 1998). In this regard, focusing their study on the balanced scorecard management system, which contains financial and nonfinancial measuring indicators, Hoque and James (2000) present a statistically significant and positive relationship between business size and the use of this management system. As these authors argue and demonstrate, the larger companies are more likely to make greater use of a management system that includes non-financial indicators for measurement. Within the context of these ideas, we propose the second research hypothesis:
Hypothesis 2: Larger companies use non-financial indicators to a greater extent than smaller companies.

I. PROBLEMAS GENERALIZADOS (TODAS LAS MÁQUINAS)
Los problemas más generalizados en todas las máquinas (prácticamente sin excepción) y que más tiempo de paradas suponen son los derivados de los errores (o inexistencia) de comunicación entre las máquinas XXX (la enfardadora y la encajonadora) con la máquina de XX que se interpone entre ellas. Esta falta de comunicación se traduce en múltiples combinaciones:
a. Paradas de la enfardadora que detecta la encajonadora pero no la etiquetadora. Esto hace que la cinta de la etiquetadora siga funcionando hasta que se llena por acumulación de fardos, provocando la necesidad de acceder con una escalera a la cinta aérea para deshacer el atasco.
b. Paradas de la etiquetadora que no detecta la enfardadora. Esto provoca que la enfardadora continúe funcionando mientras que la etiquetadora no se puede llevar los fardos al encontrarse parada, situación que da lugar a atascos a la salida de la enfardadora similares al que se puede apreciar en la foto que sigue:
c. En los casos en que la encajonadora para por acumulación o atasco a la entrada (fotocélula en cinta de transporte) el fardo que tapa la fotocélula, ahora situado bajo el metacrilato de protección de la etiquetadora, resulta muy difícil de retirar, siendo necesario para poder arrancar la encajonadora.
d. En ciertas máquinas, los fardos se sueldan en la enfardadora al no recibir la señal de parada desde la etiquetadora y, por lo tanto, no retirar las planchas de la torre de apilado.
2. SISTEMA DE DESCARTE DE FARDOS
El sistema de descarte de fardos resulta también una fuente de problemas muy diversos:
a. Uno de los principales problemas detectados consiste en la sobre-saturación del cajón. En principio, según lo explicado por XX, dicho cajón tiene un detector que avisa de la necesidad de vaciado cuando se encuentra a punto de ser rebosado. Tras ese aviso, tres fardos más pueden ser vertidos sobre el mismo, pasando después a parada de máquina. El problema es que generalmente el tiempo entre el aviso y la parada es nulo y cuando se intenta abrir el cajón para su vaciado tras la parada de la máquina, éste se encuentra tan lleno que resulta muy difícil su extracción teniendo el operario que buscar la manera de retirar los fardos superiores de maneras poco ortodoxas y que dañan la formación de cajetillas, tal como indican las imágenes que siguen...

I. GENERALIZED PROBLEMS (ALL MACHINES)
1. COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MACHINES
The generalized problems found throughout all the machines (almost without exception) and that also cause the most downtime are those resulting from the communication (or the lack thereof) between the XXX machines (the paper overwrapper and the case machine) and the XX machine that is between these two. This lack of communication leads to a variety of problematic combinations:
a. The overwrapper stops because while it does detect the case machine, it does not detect the labeler. In this case, the labeler belt keeps working until it fills up with the accumulating packs. So then, one must use a ladder to reach the aerial belt and clear the blockage.
b. The labeller stops because it does not detect the overwrapper. Thus, the overwrapper continues working while the labeler cannot process the packs since it is stopped. This situation leads to jams at the exit of the overwrapper, as can been seen in the following photograph:
c. When the case machine stops because of accumulation or blockage at the in-feed (by the photocell on the conveyer belt), the pack that is covering the photocell, currently located below labeler´s Plexiglass protection, is very difficult to remove which is necessary in order to start the case machine.
d. In some machines, the packs accumulate in the overwrapper since it does not receive a stop signal from the labeler and therefore, does not remove the plates from the stacking tower.
2. PACK REJECT SYSTEM
The pack reject system is also a source of various problems:
a. One of the main problems detected is that the reject bin overfills. In theory, according to ME´s explanation, this bin has a detector that sends a signal when it needs to be emptied and is about to overflow. After this message, three more packs can be dumped into the bin, and then the machine would stop. The problem is that in general, the time between the warning message and the machine stopping is almost nothing; thus when one tries to open the bin to empty it after the machine has stopped, the bin is so full that it is very difficult to open, forcing the operator to resort to rather unorthodox methods in order to remove the upper packs and this also damages the packs.
