Chuva, plantio, Deus, enxada e carabina. Palavras que apontam para a natureza, para expectativas, para a complacência, para tensões e para a revolta. Estas fizeram parte do vocabulário da campanha presidencial do ano de 1955 no Brasil, ocorrida um ano após o trágico suicídio de Getúlio Vargas, em tempos de golpes, revoltas e instabilidade política. Palavras que foram da pena daquele que seria eleito - o médico, político mineiro e ex-prefeito de Belo Horizonte e ex-governador de Minas Gerais, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, e depois finalmente empossado em janeiro de 1956 para um mandato de cinco anos.
Durante sua campanha eleitoral o candidato Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira divulgou um programa específico para a área de saúde e assistência médico-social (...). Esse foi um fato raro na longa história republicana brasileira e na curta experiência democrática iniciada em 1946 (..). Poucas vezes a saúde e assistência obtiveram algum destaque em campanhas eleitorais ou em programas governamentais (....). Neste programa setorial, o futuro presidente da República reafirmava que o foco continuaria sendo as endemias rurais, conjunto de doenças que freqüentavam o topo da agenda sanitária brasileira desde a década de 1910. A estas acresceria a lepra, a tuberculose (e denominaria todas sob o rótulo de “doenças de massas”) e também as emergentes doenças do mundo moderno como o câncer e as cardiopatias. O seu maior objetivo seria libertar o Brasil do desconfortável adjetivo de ser “um grande hospital”. Afinal, em meados do século XX , diria ele, o “Brasil não era só doença” (....)
Neste programa de governo para a saúde e assistência, Kubitschek articulou o combate às endemias rurais (malária, esquistossomose, verminoses, bouba, bócio endêmico) e ao que seriam suas causas: pobreza, fome, desemprego. E, desse modo, ao seu projeto de desenvolvimento econômico. Essa articulação subordinava o controle e mesmo erradicação dessas doenças no Brasil rural a uma ideia-força que percorre este programa de governo: a recuperação do homem do campo enfermo e desnutrido e sua transformação num saudável trabalhador rural; a incorporação de novos territórios à dinâmica capitalista convertendo-os de insalubres e improdutivos a espaços para a produção agrícola. Mais ainda, se comprometia com a extensão da legislação trabalhista para os trabalhadores rurais, para os “vaqueiros” e os “seringueiros” que são apresentados como “tipos brasileiros” do interior e da Amazônia. Em várias passagens, o diagnóstico de JK aponta para os clássicos temas da seca, da instabilidade social, da reprodução rotineira do atraso e da pobreza no meio rural pela ausência do poder público em várias dimensões e para uma visão imobilista e idealizada, de matriz euclidiana, do sertanejo como “forte”, compartilhada pelos “homens do litoral”. Também lhe incomodava, ainda, uma visão contemplativa e condescendente dos homens e mulheres dos sertões do Brasil para com suas próprias mazelas. A solução trágica, muitas vezes, era o abandono do campo e a migração para as cidades. Caberia ao Estado remover esses obstáculos para a expansão e modernização da agricultura brasileira, fixar as famílias no campo e estender a proteção social ao campo que, desde 1930, era privilégio dos trabalhadores urbanos organizados e vinculados aos setores mais fortes da economia.

He waits for it patiently. But the rain is a long time coming, and might not even come; when it does, it’s a scant rain, a pitiful rain. . . .And so he plants and hopes God will send more.
Forsaken as always in his life, bitterly disillusioned. . .betrayed. . .it would be no surprise if the Brazilian peasant were not to pick up a hoe to work but a rifle, to protest.
Rain, crops, God, hoe, rifle. Words that evoke nature, expectations, resignation, tension, and rebellion. These were part of the lexicon during the 1955 presidential campaign in Brazil, one year after Getúlio Vargas’s tragic suicide, a time of military coups, rebellions, and political instability. Words penned by the man who was to be elected president—physician, politician from Minas Gerais, former mayor of Belo Horizonte and former governor of Minas Gerais, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira—the man who in January 1956 would be sworn in for a five-year term of office.
During his campaign, candidate Kubitschek announced a program for health and medical-social assistance (...). This was a rarity in Brazil’s long history as a republic and short experience as a democracy, initiated in 1946 (…). Only a few times had the topics of health and assistance received much of any notice in campaign platforms or overall government planning (...). In his sectoral program, the future president of the republic avowed that the spotlight would remain on rural endemic diseases, which had headed Brazil’s sanitary agenda since the 1910s. Added to these would be leprosy and tuberculosis (all of them encompassed under the title “mass diseases”), along with the emerging illnesses typical of our modern world, like cancer and heart disease. Kubitschek’s prime objective was to disassociate Brazil from the embarrassing descriptor “an immense hospital.” After all, in the mid-twentieth century, as he put it, “Brazil [isn’t] only disease” (....).
In his administration’s health and assistance program, Kubitschek articulated the fight against rural endemic diseases—malaria, schistosomiasis, tapeworm, yaws, and endemic goiter—with what were seen as their causes, that is, poverty, hunger, unemployment. Thus he tied health concerns in with his project for economic development too. By linking illnesses with their causes, the control and even eradication of Brazil’s rural diseases became subordinated to a guiding principle that permeated Kubitschek’s program: the need to heal the sickly, undernourished people of rural Brazil, transform them into healthy workers, and incorporate new territories into the capitalist dynamic, thereby refashioning unhealthy, non-productive regions into regions ready for agricultural development. Moreover, this program was committed to extending labor laws to rural workers—to “vaqueiros” and “seringueiros,” the Brazilian cowhands and rubber workers depicted as “Brazilian types” from the interior and the Amazon. At various points, Kubitschek’s diagnosis recalls the classic themes of drought, social instability, and the habitual reproduction of backwardness and poverty in rural Brazil that stemmed from an absence of government at many levels. It furthermore brings to mind the immobilist, idealized vision rooted in Euclides da Cunha, that is, the vision of the “strong” sertanejo—or Northeasterner—an image held by “men from the coast.” Kubitschek was also bothered by the contemplative, resigned way that the men and women of Brazil’s backlands viewed their own hardships. Their sad solution was very often to leave the countryside and migrate to the city. For Kubitschek, the State should be responsible for eliminating these obstacles to the expansion and modernization of Brazilian agriculture, for getting families to stay in the countryside, and for extending to workers in the interior the social protection enjoyed by urban workers, who since 1930 had been organized and were part of the country’s strongest economic sectors.

DAS VIAGENS IMAGINÁRIAS ÀS VIAGENS REAIS
A descoberta da América talvez tenha sido o feito mais espantoso da história dos homens: abria as portas de um novo tempo, diferente de todos os outros - a nenhum semelhante, dizia Las Casas -, somava às já conhecidas África e Ásia uma nova porção do globo, conferia aos homens a totalidade de que eram parte. Entretanto, o achado não foi, de imediato, apreendido na sua novidade: nas ilhas caribenhas, Colombo buscava, inquieto, os traços asiáticos que lhe assegurassem ter chegado à terra do Grande Cã, chamando índios aos aborígenes que encontrava, procurando associar o que via às narrativas de viagem de Montecorvino, Pian del Carpine, Polo e tantos outros exploradores medievais que, do século XIII até fins do século XIV, percorreram a Ásia e a região do Índico beneficiando-se da "Pax Mongolica". Todo um universo imaginário acoplava-se ao novo fato, sendo, simultaneamente, fecundado por ele: os olhos europeus procuravam a confirmação do que já sabiam, relutantes ante o reconhecimento do outro. Numa época em que ouvir valia mais do que ver, os olhos enxergavam primeiro o que se ouvira dizer; tudo quanto se via era filtrado pelos relatos de viagens fantásticas, de terras longínquas, de homens monstruosos que habitavam os confins do mundo conhecido. Aos poucos, talvez com traumatismos, as evidências da novidade cresceriam sobre of acervo milenar do imaginário europeu, destruindo sonhos e fantasias, somando-se a outros elementos desencantadores do mundo: em 1820, Leopardi acusou e lamentou este movimento. Europeu, como tal se perdia na incapacidade de reconhecimento do outro: o universo novo que se constituiu em torno da imagem americana. Haviam-se passado trezentos anos, tempo suficiente para que os projeções mentais dos europeus quinhentistas se espraiassem pelo continente recém-descoberto, somando-se ao universo imaginário de povos de outras culturas e, finalmente, fundindo-se a eles. Com o processo colonizador, tecer-se-ia um imaginário colonial Americano, do qual outros europeus, além de Leopardi, não dariam conta.

Adivinhações, curas mágicas, benzeduras procuravam responder às necessidades e atender aos acontecimentos diários, tornando menos dura a vida naqueles tempos difíceis. Muitas vezes, combinavam-se para tentar amortecer os impactos provocados por um dos mais importantes componentes da vida cotidiana, ligado diretamente às condições de subsistência material dos colonos: a aventura ultramarina.
Um quinto, às vezes um quarto da população de Portugal esteve envolvida na faina ultramarina. Isto significava, em média, um ou dois habitantes por família. Numa época em que as conquistas técnicas ainda eram incipientes, o mar era o espaço por excelência do medo: era “o domínio privilegiado de Satã e das forças infernais.” Portanto, apesar da longa tradição de povo ribeirinho, os portugueses temiam pelos familiares distantes, às voltas com ondas, rodamoinhos, tufões, gigantes Adamastores.
Na Bretanha, onde também abundavam marujos, suas mulheres faziam sortilégios para terem os maridos de volta: limpavam as capelas próximas às suas aldeias e jogavam o pó no ar. Com isto, esperavam ter vento favorável para a retorno dos esposos.
Muitos procuraram explicar o grande surto de feitiçaria basca de inícios do século XVII pela faina marítima de seus habitantes. De Lancre, o terrível juiz do Labourd, talvez tenha sido um dos primeiros a estabelecer esta relação; para ele, as lindas mulheres bascas, que, verão após verão, eram deixadas sozinhas em casa pelos maridos pescadores, destilavam com o olhar “perigos de amor e sortilégio”. Mas é o doutor Martínez de Isasti quem vai mais longe. Na Relación, constrói explicação lapidar: “Graças a seu pacto com o diabo, as feiticeiras dizem o que se passa no mar e no fim do mundo; às vezes, são verdades, e outras vezes são mentiras. Aconteceulhes dizer, no dia seguinte a um acontecimento, o que se tinha passado a cem ou quinhentas léguas de distância, e a informação era verdadeira. ( . . . ) É isto que impele tantas mulheres a se tornarem feiticeiras: desejam obter notícias de seus maridos e de seus filhos, que estão nas índias, Terra Nova ou Noruega”. Se, de fato, tantos homens dos séculos XVI e XVII acreditavam ser o mar o domínio de Satã, nada mais natural que as feiticeiras conhecessem seus segredos melhor do que ninguém. Aprendiam-nos com os diabos, que muitas vezes moravam em embarcações ou nas profundezas oceânicas. O diabo que ajudava a cafuza Maria Joana em feitiçarias e conjuros às vezes não aparecia por não estar em-terra, mas “em um navio donde não podia sair”. Maria Barbosa, mulher parda, invocava um diabo marinho em suas orações: “Grande diaba marinho, a ti te entrego este pinho . . .”.

FROM IMAGINARY VOYAGES TO REAL VOYAGES
The discovery of America was perhaps the most amazing feat in the history of humanity. It opened the doors to a new time, different from all others—or “like to no other,” as Las Casas wrote. It joined the known worlds of Africa and Asia to a new part of the globe, as men “discovered the totality of which they are a part.” The novelty of the discovery was not, however, immediately understood. In the Caribbean Islands a restless Christopher Columbus searched for the signs of Asia that would assure him he had reached the land of the Great Khan. Calling the indigenous peoples he encountered “Indians,” Columbus struggled to link what he saw to the travel narratives of Juan de Monte Corvino, Giovanni da Pian Carpino, Marco Polo, and so many other Medieval explorers who from the thirteenth through the end of the fourteenth century had taken advantage of the Pax Mongolica to journey throughout Asia and the Indian Ocean region. This new information brought with it and fertilized a whole imaginary universe. European eyes sought confirmation of what they already knew, leery of recognizing the Other. At a time when hearing meant more than seeing, the eyes first saw what they had heard said, and everything they saw was filtered through reports of fantastic voyages, of far-off lands and monstrous beings who inhabited the ends of the known world. Perhaps with some trauma, the evidence of these new things gradually crept into the age-old patrimony of the European imagination, destroying dreams and fantasies and finding echo in other signs of the world’s disenchantment. In 1820, Giacomo Leopardi pointed his accusing finger at what he felt was a lamentable trend. As a European, he was lost in this inability to recognize the Other, that is, the new universe emerging around the American image. Three hundred years had gone by, time enough for the mental projections of sixteenth-century Europeans to stretch into the newly discovered continent, encountering the imaginary universe of peoples from other cultures and ultimately merging with them. The colonizing process would see the weaving of an American colonial imagination, while other Europeans, not just Leopardi, would not realize it.

THE OVERSEAS UNIVERSE
Divinations, magical cures, and superstitious blessings were an attempt to respond to the needs and events of daily life, making things a little easier at a time of frequent hardships. They were often used in combination, as part of an effort to ameliorate the impacts of one of the most important components of daily life, directly tied to the colonists' subsistence-level living conditions: the overseas venture.
One-fifth and at times even one-fourth of Portugal’s population was engaged in the overseas effort. This meant an average of one or two people per family. At a time when little was known of technology, the sea easily incited fear. It was "the privileged dominion of Satan and of infernal forces.” So despite their long tradition as a seafaring people, the Portuguese feared for their relatives far away, who were battling waves, whirlpools, typhoons, and giant Adamastors.
In Brittany, where sailors were also numerous, their wives resorted to sortilege to get them back: they cleaned the chapels near their towns and threw the dust into the air, hoping favorable winds would bring their husbands home as a result.
Many have argued that the Basque maritime endeavor accounts for the great upsurge in Basque sorcery in the early seventeenth century. Pierre De Lancre, the terrifying judge of Labourd, was perhaps one of the first to draw this link; for him, the beautiful Basque women who were left home alone by their fishermen husbands summer after summer insinuated “dangers of love and sortilege” with their eyes. But it was Dr. Martínez de Isasti who went further. In Relación que hizo el Doctor don lope de ysasti presbytero y beneficiado de leço …, Isasti constructs a brilliant explanation: "Women witches, because of the pact they have made with the Devil, can give news of what is happening at sea or at the ends of the earth; sometimes they are right and sometimes wrong in what they say, but there have been people who have known about events that occurred a hundred or five hundred leagues away the day after they happened, and who have been right….And this is their chief motive for becoming witches, to get news of their husbands and sons who are on their way to the Indies, Newfoundland or Norway.” If so many sixteenth- and seventeenth-century people in fact believed the sea to be the dominion of Satan, nothing could be more natural than sorceresses knowing its secrets better than anyone else. They learned these from the devils, which often dwelled on ships or in the ocean depths. The devil that helped the cafuza Maria Joana with spells and conjurations sometimes failed to appear because he was not on land but "on a ship that he could not leave.” Maria Barbosa, parda, would summon an ocean demon in her prayers: "Great demon maritime, unto thee I deliver this pine.”

Ao pesquisar o precioso arquivo do médico Belisário Penna, responsável pelas ações de saneamento rural durante a gestão de Carlos Chagas no Departamento Nacional de Saúde Pública, pudemos perceber, nas centenas de registros fotográficos produzidos nos vários estados brasileiros, a dimensão concreta do projeto sanitarista que mobilizou esses e tantos outros médicos, cientistas e intelectuais nas primeiras décadas do século XX. E qual não foi nossa surpresa quando, entre os muitos habitantes daquelas longínquas paragens brasileiras, uma de nós (Simone) deparou-se com a imagem de sua tia-bisavó, Jandira Caldas Botelho, a preparar medicamentos no balcão de um posto de saúde na pequena Quebrangulo, interior de Alagoas.
Além da extraordinária coincidência, o episódio teve um sentido que vai além de seu aspecto pitoresco e nos levou a pensar em uma importante dimensão do legado de Carlos Chagas. Essa ciência que alcançou projeção internacional e ao mesmo tempo se embrenhou pelos ‘sertões’ do Brasil, na trilha de Euclides da Cunha, produziu não apenas idéias e intervenções sobre a nação, mas o registro histórico de muitos brasileiros e brasileiras anônimos, gente simples e comum, sobre a qual provavelmente não haveria indícios nos arquivos correntes dos grandes centros. Junto aos tantos doentes fotografados pelo olhar médico, a expressar a triste realidade de um Brasil “imenso hospital”, estiveram os muitos trabalhadores – médicos, enfermeiras, farmacêuticos – que se associaram aos médicos e cientistas vindos do ‘litoral’ nesse longo e coletivo processo pelo qual a medicina brasileira construiu não apenas conhecimentos e ações de saúde, mas a própria nação. Nos arquivos, e nas imagens que eles guardam, encontramos fragmentos e vestígios desse caminho. Que o leitor tenha prazer em percorrê-lo conosco.

Com as imagens aqui reunidas, queremos apresentar uma narrativa visual sobre a trajetória de vida do médico e cientista Carlos Chagas. Elas são resultado de pesquisa, identificação, seleção, edição e tratamento gráfico; além das legendas, vêm acompanhadas de trechos de depoimentos e citações de época.
Pesquisar e reunir imagens, tendo como objetivo criar um quadro que permita compreender a trajetória de um indivíduo no seu tempo e espaço, manifesta a intenção de utilizar as representações visuais como instrumento cognitivo. As fotografias, entre outros tipos de imagens, constituem realizações materiais das formas de ver e de representar características de uma época. Além disso, com a dimensão do universo dos documentos iconográficos a que se tem acesso hoje, somos levados a problematizar o espaço ocupado pela visualidade em diferentes sociedades, em distintos momentos.
O primeiro passo para a realização dessa empreitada consistiu na localização de acervos que apresentassem conexões expressivas com a vida de Carlos Chagas. Ao mesmo tempo, mantínhamos a atenção voltada para a pesquisa de registros que pudessem, em alguns casos, representar ‘contextos’ relativos a períodos da vida do biografado, estratégia presente no capítulo dedicado à sua infância, por exemplo. Nessa busca, vários acervos foram considerados de interesse, e o livro conta com uma gama variada de documentos deles provenientes. Contamos, fundamentalmente, com o arquivo histórico do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC) – local de formação e atuação profissional de Chagas, cujos laços com o cientista foram por ele mesmo ressaltados como mais do que simples laços profissionais – e com o seu arquivo pessoal. Esses dois conjuntos documentais fornecem as principais fontes a partir das quais construímos a ‘espinha dorsal’ desta narrativa, e não por acaso.
Os arquivos, de modo geral, têm características muito peculiares, na medida em que encontram a sua unidade e a razão mesma de sua existência na figura de quem os produziu, seja uma instituição ou um indivíduo. Essa relação única entre os documentos e seu produtor está na origem de um tipo de vínculo específico que só os documentos de arquivo apresentam, capaz de transformar uma massa de documentos de conteúdos e formatos diversos em um todo organicamente significante. Cada documento, e todos no seu agrupamento, encontram o seu sentido original naquela relação. É por isso que costumamos encontrar, na sequência serial da documentação que caracteriza os arquivos, uma densidade de informações, uma organicidade de relações que dificilmente se apresenta da mesma forma em outros tipos de acervos.
Foi no arquivo pessoal de Chagas e no da instituição à qual devotou sua vida que encontramos as pedras fundamentais que sustentam a narrativa sobre a trajetória do cientista. Com base nesses universos documentais e na compreensão atual que temos de sua vida, em uma perspectiva histórica, fomos escolhendo os episódios que queríamos abordar, as imagens que poderiam expressá-los, e as sequências que, ‘costurando’ esses elementos, lhes conferissem sentido. Nesse processo, o conhecimento histórico ia tecendo a trama que envolveria os elementos aparentemente dispersos da documentação, ao mesmo tempo que os próprios registros nos sugeriam, de diferentes maneiras, novos percursos narrativos.

Our research took us into the valuable archive of physician Belisário Penna, responsible for rural sanitation measures while Carlos Chagas was head of the National Department of Public Health. Containing hundreds of photographic records taken at states around Brazil, this collection made us recognize the true dimensions of the sanitation project that mobilized these and so many other doctors, scientists, and intellectuals during the early decades of the twentieth century. And much to our surprise, among the pictures of so many inhabitants of far-flung corners of Brazil, one of us (Simone) stumbled on a photograph of her great-great-aunt Jandira Caldas Botelho, preparing medicine at the counter of a sanitary post in the small town of Quebrangulo, in rural Alagoas.
This striking coincidence set us to thinking beyond the incident’s anecdotal charm and to reflecting about an important dimension of Carlos Chagas’s legacy. This approach to science, which was projected onto the world stage at the same time that it ventured into the hinterlands of Brazil on the trail of Euclides da Cunha, did more than generate ideas and spur interventions with a nationwide impact; it also bequeathed us a historical record of many anonymous Brazilian men and women, simple, ordinary people who otherwise would be unlikely to leave any traces in today’s big city archives. Among the scores of diseased people photographed by the medical eye, evincing the sad reality of the “enormous hospital” of Brazil, there were likewise many workers—physicians, nurses, pharmacists—who joined with the doctors and scientists from the seacoast as part of the long, collective process through which Brazilian medicine constructed new knowledge and new public health initiatives while building the very nation. In archives and the images they hold, we find fragments and traces of this road. We hope you will find pleasure in traveling it with us.

Through the images found on these pages, we have endeavored to craft a visual narrative of the life trajectory of physician and scientist Carlos Chagas. The images are the product of research, identification, selection, editing, and graphic treatment. In addition to textual captions, the reader will find excerpts of testimonies and historical quotations.
In researching and assembling these images in order to paint a picture that provides an understanding of an individual’s journey through his time and space, we opted to use visual representations as a cognitive tool. Photographs, like other types of images, are concrete realizations of how people typically see and represent things during a given era. Moreover, considering the volume of today’s universe of accessible iconographic documents, we are led to reflect on the space occupied by visual culture in different societies at different moments.
Our first step in this enterprise was to locate archives that had significant connections to Carlos Chagas’s life. Concomitantly, we were attentive to researching records that might be representative of contextual settings within our subject’s lifetime—a strategy used in the chapter on Chagas’s childhood, for instance. A number of holdings were deemed of interest in this search, and the book includes a wide gamut of documents from these. Our main sources were Chagas’s personal archive and the historical archive belonging to the institution where he trained and spent most of his career—the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (OCI)—and where he forged bonds that went deeper than mere professional ties, as he himself affirmed more than once. The backbone of our narrative was constructed from these two sets of records—and this is no accident.
Every archive tends to display its own distinctive characteristics, since it derives its very unity and raison d’être from the personality that produced it, whether this was an institutional entity or an individual. This unique relationship between records and their creator lies at the heart of a kind of connection peculiar to archival records, a connection capable of taking a mass of documents of varied content and format and transforming them into an organically significant whole. Every record in itself, and all of them within their grouping, traces its original meaning to this relationship. This is why the characteristically serial nature of an archive’s documentation offers us densely packed information and organic relationships rarely observed in the same way in other kinds of holdings.
The cornerstones of this narrative of the scientist’s life and career were found in his personal archive and the archive of the institution to which he devoted his life. Grounded in this universe of documents and in our current understanding of his life from a historical perspective, we selected the episodes we wanted to address, the images that could express them, and the sequence in which they could be stitched together in a meaningful way. In the process, historical knowledge served to weave apparently disparate elements of documentation into a web, while we also discovered that the records themselves had their own ways of suggesting new narrative paths.

Setenta anos depois, o Brasil é um grande país com 170 milhões de habitantes, a grande maioria vivendo nos centros urbanos. A economia, em termos per-capita, se situa entre as mais desenvolvidas da região, próximo da do México, Chile e Argentina; socialmente, porém, os níveis de exclusão e desigualdade são muito maiores, estando entre os piores do mundo. Pobreza e desigualdade não são fruto de uma “dualidade” que existiria entre diferentes segmentos da sociedade, como alguns autores no passado chegaram a propor. O país é hoje totalmente integrado pela língua, pelas comunicações de massas, pelos transportes e pelo mercado. Parte da pobreza que existe é ainda rural, localizada sobretudo nos estados do Nordeste e em zonas agrícolas deprimidas em Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro outras regiões, e constituída por pessoas que não conseguem produzir para o mercado, sobrevivendo, no máximo, em uma economia de subsistência extremamente precária. Em sua maioria, no entanto, a pobreza é urbana, localizada na periferia das grandes cidades, e constituída por pessoas em grande parte originárias do campo, e cuja integração ao mercado de consumo não tem correspondência com o mercado de trabalho.

Como no passado, estes altos níveis de pobreza e exclusão são causados por uma combinação de heranças, condições e escolhas de natureza econômica, política e cultural. É ingênuo supor que a pobreza e a desigualdade poderiam ser eliminadas pela simples “vontade política”, ou pela redistribuição de recursos dos ricos para os pobres. Analistas que têm tratado do tema concordam que o maior correlato da desigualdade de renda no país são as diferenças em educação. Sem educação, é difícil conseguir emprego, e, na ausência de uma população educada, poucos empregos de qualidade são criados. Com a escassez da educação, seu valor de mercado aumenta, e esta é uma das grandes causas da desigualdade de renda observada no país.
Entretanto, não é verdade que nada pode ser feito em relação à pobreza enquanto a situação educacional da população não se alterar de forma mais substancial. Mesmo com as limitações de recursos existentes, deve haver espaço para políticas mais efetivas, sem aumentos mais significativos de custos; segundo, os programas podem ser mais bem focalizados, atendendo prioritariamente aos mais necessitados; terceiro, discriminações sociais, quando existem, podem ser reduzidas ou eliminadas; quarto, deve haver espaço para políticas redistributivas, dentro de certos limites.
Quanto destas quatro políticas estão sendo implementadas hoje? Se elas não estão, como explicar o que está ocorrendo, e o que se pode fazer para alterar esta situação? Uma pesquisa sobre exclusão social deve tratar destes temas, e concluir com propostas sobre o que se pode fazer para levá-los adiante nas diversas áreas de ação do poder público.

First Part: General Concepts and Methodology
Seventy years later, Brazil is a huge country with 170 million inhabitants, the vast majority living in urban centers. In per capita terms, the economy ranks among the region's most developed, close to that of Mexico, Chile and Argentina. Socially, however, the country's levels of exclusion and inequality are much higher, standing among the worst in the world. Poverty and inequality are not the product of a "duality" supposedly existing between different segments of society, as some authors have argued in the past. Today’s Brazil is wholly integrated by language, mass communications, transportation, and the market. Part of its poverty is still rural, located most especially in the Northeast and in depressed agricultural zones in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and other regions, comprising people who are unable to produce for the market and who at best manage to survive within an extremely precarious subsistence economy. But the bulk of Brazil's poverty is urban, located on the periphery of its large cities and composed largely of people from rural areas whose integration into the consumer market finds no correspondence on the labor market.

As in the past, these high levels of poverty and exclusion are caused by a combination of legacies, conditions, and choices that are economic, political, or cultural in nature. It would be naïve to assume that poverty and inequality could be done away with simply through "political will" or by redistributing resources from the rich to the poor. Analysts agree that educational differences are the strongest correlate of income inequality in Brazil. Without an education, it is hard to find a job, and without an educated workforce, few skilled jobs will be created. Given the shortage of educational opportunities, the market value of education increases, and this is one of the major causes of income inequality in Brazil.
It is not true, however, that nothing can be done about poverty until the population's educational situation is substantially improved. Even taking into account current limited resources, there must be room for more effective policies that would not entail significant cost increases. Second, programs could be better focused to give priority attention to the most disadvantaged. Third, where social discrimination exists, it could be reduced or eliminated. Fourth, there must be room for redistributive policies, within certain limits.
How many of these four policies are currently in force? And if they aren't, how can we explain what is happening, and what can be done to change this status quo? Research on social exclusion must address these issues and must conclude with proposals concerning what can be done to advance on the various government fronts.

…Quando aqui cheguei vinda da Europa, pequena descobridora de 11 anos, araras gritaram, como aquelas que receberam os primeiros portugueses. Mas eram araras confinadas num viveiro cheio de plantas tropicais, postas ali exatamente para recepcionar os viajantes. Chegava-se ainda pelo mar, embora vindo de avião, porque não havia ponte ligando a ilha do aeroporto ao continente, e era preciso atravessar de lancha. Os pilares da futura ponte apenas despontavam. O próprio aeroporto era ainda um projeto. E no trajeto para casa passei por uma mansão que estava sendo demolida. “Aqui também houve bombadeiros?” perguntei ingénue. Sem saber, eu havia visto o próprio princípio do Rio: o encanto tropical sob controle e a febre de desfazer para construir algo novo e maior.
Fui garota de praia num Arpoador onde todos se conheciam. Havia garoupas entocadas, mariscos nas pedras, tatuís na areia. Pesquei siris no Leme ao entardecer, e polvos no Recreio. À noite, meus amigos iam caçar jacarés nas lagoas selvagens da Barra da Tijuca. Guardo ainda um desenho que fiz, da beira da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, junto ao pontal do Vasco, em que Ipanema, do outro lado da água, é apenas o perfil de tantas casa baixas em que se destacam, altas, as torres da igreja Nossa Senhora da Paz.
As torres hoje se tornaram baixas ao lado dos altos edifícios que as rodeiam. Na Barra, uma nova e moderníssima cidade espantou os jacarés. Os tatuís foram se enterrar em outras areias, as garoupas filosofam rosadas em tocas distantes. E eu não sou mais garota.
Mas nos meus olhos o Rio que conheci se soma a este atual, numa superposição de belezas em que nada se perde. E eu continuo encantada, descobridora que fui como os navegadores portugueses, como os decobridores tantos que aqui não param de chegar.
O intuito deste livro é proporcionar o mesmo encantamento, entregar a um olhar, talvez inicialmente distraído, a sensualidade com que nessa cidade o mar se insinua terra adentro e a terra estende os dedos acariciando o mar. É recriar a emoção que todo carioca sente quando, num fim de tarde ou numa manhã radiosa, ao sair da escuridão do túnel Rebouças, se depara com a mansa beleza da Lagoa brotando como um olho dágua no colo das florestas, e sabe, com absoluta certeza, que o túnel não foi cavado na viva rocha para facilitar o trânsito, mas sim para trazê-lo da escuridão à luz e fazê-lo renascer em pura beleza.
Desde o início artistas se esforçaram para reproduzir as paisagens do Rio com a mesma amplidão com que os sentidos desejavam possuí-las. Lá estão, retratados na tela de Antoine Taunay, “Morro de Santo Antônio em 1816”, quatro frades que, quase como um símbolo desse desejo, posicionam uma luneta no alto de um terraço tentando descortinar melhor do alto do morro o casario lá embaixo, o mar, os barcos e ao longe o Pão de Açucar. Só agora, porém, a técnica nos permite a fartura dos 360o.
Eu o obtive uma vez, esse olhar pleno, total, inesquecível. Havia subido ao alto da Pedra da Gávea. Abaixo, cidade e mar. Em volta, as ondulações das montanhas. E o silêncio no vento zunindo altíssimo. Eu abri os braços. Comecei a girar de olhos abertos, querendo ver tudo, apossar-me de tudo. E girei sobre mim mesma, girei farta de azul, girei como um pião, como um derviche, como uma máquina fotográfica.

…When I arrived here from Europe, a small, 11-year-old discoverer, parrots cried out, like those that greeted the first Portuguese. But they were parrots confined to a cage full of tropical plants, placed there precisely to receive visitors. You still arrived by sea, although flying in on a plane – because there was as yet no bridge linking Governador Island to the mainland, and you made the crossing by boat. The pillars of the future bridge were just breaking up through the water. The airport itself was still a project. And on the way to our house, we passed by a mansion under demolition. “Were there bombings here too?” I asked innocently. Without knowing it, I had seen the very principle of Rio: tropical wonder under control, and the fever of undoing things to build something new and bigger.
I was a beach girl at an Arpoador where everyone knew everyone else. There were groupers nestled in hollows, tatuís in the sand. I caught little crabs in nearby Leme late in the day, and octopuses in remote Recreio. At night, my friends would hunt for alligators in the wild lagoons of Barra da Tijuca. I still have a drawing I did of the edge of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, next to Vasco Point, where across the water the neighborhood of Ipanema is nothing but the profile of many low houses, with the towers of Our Lady of Peace Church standing tall.
Today these towers have grown short alongside the high buildings surrounding them. Out in Barra da Tijuca, a new, ultra-modern city has frightened off the alligators. The tatuís have gone to bury themselves in other sands, the rosy groupers philosophize in distant hollows. And I am no longer a young girl.
But in my eyes the Rio I knew merges with the present one, in an overlapping of beauty where nothing is lost. And I am still struck by wonder, discoverer that I was like the Portuguese navigators, like so many discoverers who keep right on arriving here.
The purpose of this book is to share this same wonder, to offer up to an eye – perhaps a distracted one at first – the sensuality with which in this city the sea insinuates itself into the land and the land stretches out its fingers to caress the sea. Its purpose is to recreate the emotion all cariocas feel when leaving the darkness of Rebouças Tunnel in the late afternoon or on a bright morning to find themselves before the gentle beauty of the lagoon budding like a fountainhead in the lap of the forests, and they know with absolute certainty that the tunnel was not dug into the living rock to facilitate traffic but rather to bring them out of darkness into light, making them re-born into pure beauty.
From the beginning, artists have endeavored to reproduce Rio’s landscapes with the same breadth with which their senses wanted to possess them. There, in Antoine Taunay’s “Santo Antônio Hill in 1816,” we see four friars who, almost like a symbol of this desire, position a telescope high on a terrace, from up on the hill attempting to better discover the houses down below, the sea, the boats, and in the distance Sugarloaf. But it is only now that technology affords us the plenty of 360o.
It was mine once, this full sight, total, unforgettable. I had climbed to the top of Gávea Rock. Down below, city and sea. Around me, waves of mountains. And the silence within the wind howling loudly. I opened my arms. I began to spin with my eyes open, wanting to see everything, to seize it all. And I spun around myself, I spun sated in blue, I spun like a top, like a dervish, like a camera.

Ali estão os doze profetas no cume de um monte em Congonhas. Bazin viu ali um autêntico balé sacro como os que ocorrem em monumentos na Sicília e até na ponte do Castelo Santo Ângelo, em Roma. Ele que já havia visto nas obras barrocas brasileiras o contraponto e a fuga de massas, agora anota que nessas esculturas interessa mais o ritmo visual do que a geometria dos volumes.
Portanto, esses profetas estão no espaço, soltos na imaginação e dançam e lançam aos ares suas advertências. E vão se movimentando conforme o espectador por eles vai passando.

Friar Antônio das Chagas climbs to the pulpit dressed in his black frock. He holds a skull in his hands. He is about to deliver another sermon that will fill his believers with awe. He will cry out words of warning, rattling bones at the consciences of his listeners. He will say that we are dust and to dust shall return, that all is misery, that only everlasting life should seduce us.
And he will recite his final poem on the fatuity of human life:

There stand the twelve prophets atop a mount in Congonhas. Bazin recognized in them an authentic sacred ballet, like those of Sicilian monuments or on the bridge of Rome’s Santo Angelo castle. Having earlier identified the counterpoint and fugue of form in Brazilian Baroque, Bazin now observes that visual rhythm matters more than geometric shape in Aleijadinho’s sculptures.
These prophets are therefore suspended in space, freed in our imagination, dancing and hurling out their warnings. And moving about as the spectator passes by.
There stands Isaiah, whose lips were touched by seraphim.
There stands Jeremiah, lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem.
There stands Baruch, warning about the end of time.
There stands Ezekiel, describing how the Lord will come in a fiery chariot pulled by winged creatures.
There stands Daniel, boasting how God delivered him from the lions’ den.
There stands Hosea, making a daring, permissive declaration about adultery.
There stands Jonas, spewed from the mouth of the whale after spending three days and three nights in its belly.

And a theater in cedar begins to unfold as the visitor goes down by the chapels where life-sized images tell the story of Christ’s suffering on the path to Calvary. According to the omniscient Bazin, these Stations of the Cross in Minas Gerais, crafted between 1796 and 1799, are lovelier than those in Portugal, Italy, and Germany: “Aleijadinho’s statues of Christ are surely the loveliest of all such Stations of the Cross. At a moment when religious art was declining, this mestizo genius added a final verse to the poem of Christ’s Passion.”

Primeiro Brian estourou os miolos. Dez dias depois, Robbie se enforcou. E na sequência, Justin bebeu veneno para ratos. E Max, três dias depois, seguiu o caminho do Brian, do Robbie e do Justin. Pensei com meus botões, o pessoal daquela região, Texas, não sei bem onde era, Wisconsin, aquela gente deve acordar a cada manhã e se perguntar: quem vai se enforcar hoje? Quem vai se jogar do décimo andar? Não é coincidência, concluíram os especialistas. Sei lá onde li essa história, mas a teoria é que se trata de uma epidemia. Um se mata e a coisa se espalha como uma gripe. Um vírus poderoso. A notícia sai em todos os jornais, na televisão, no rádio, e aqueles defuntos que horas antes eram só um estudante tímido, só um viúvo, um pacato vendedor de eletrodoméstico ou um filho de imigrante chinês, sem nenhum talento ou brilho, transformam-se em celebridades como artistas de cinema ou jogadores de beisebol. Uma fama negra, é verdade. Estrelas infecciosas. Os outros, os que não se matam, fomentam a morte e fazem o espetáculo. Isso também faz parte da doença. Fofocam, comentam, se lambuzam de verdade. Comem jornais. Vivem daquilo. O enterro é um grande acontecimento, com a presença do prefeito, que presta homenagem ao enforcado com um belo discurso. Alunos fazem uma cantoria de mãos dadas. Luto é declarado e a bandeira do time é hasteada. Parece até a entrega do Oscar local. São um prêmio, as homenagens. Você se mata e, em troca, fica famoso na sua cidadezinha. Por alguns dias. E algum tempo depois, outro se enforca, e mais outro, num círculo vicioso, que paradoxalmente dá vida àquelas cidades mortas como nomes tão conhecidos quanto Frostproof. Uma epidemia, dizem os sociólogos. E não adianta lavar as mãos. Não adianta usar álcool. Nem máscara. A única forma de você não estourar os miolos é desligar a televisão. Desligar o rádio. Não ler jornais. Sair da cidade. Eu mesmo me sentia contaminado. Na minha opinião, era também um surto o que estávamos vivendo em Corumbá. De outro tipo, mas igualmente perverso. Em todos os jornais, no rádio, na televisão, só se falava no acidente do piloto. A diferença é que ninguém se matava. Dava pena ver a dona Lu. Emagreceu um bocado. Eu tinha praticamente que carregá-la até o carro, nas vezes em que íamos para a igreja. E nessas ocasiões, os urubus a cercavam, quase pediam autógrafo. Está doendo muito?, era o que eles queriam saber. Quanto dói ter um filho desaparecido? Bandos atrás de carniça. Gostavam de sentir dó daquela mulher rica e bonita, que estava bem fodida, apesar de ser rica e bonita. Sentiam-se bem com isso. A desgraça de dona Lu permitia que eles se sentissem piedosos. Esse, aliás, é outro sintoma da epidemia. A bondade patológica que surge na comunidade. Em vez da febre e da diarreia, de repente, aparece esse sintoma, a compaixão.

First Brian blew his brains out. Ten days later Robbie hanged himself. Following that Justin drank rat poison. And three days later Max went the way of Brian, Robbie and Justin. I thought to myself, those folks in that region, Texas, Wisconsin, I don’t know quite where it was, those folks must wake up every morning and ask themselves, who’s going to hang himself today? Who’s going to throw himself out the window? It’s no coincidence, the experts have concluded. Don’t know where I read this story but the theory is, it’s a kind of epidemic. One person kills himself and the thing spreads like the flu, a powerful virus. The news is all over the papers, TV, radio, and those corpses who only hours before were just a shy student, just a widower, an unassuming appliance salesman or the son of a Chinese immigrant, lacking any talent or shine, become celebrities like movie stars or baseball players. It’s black fame, admittedly. Contagious stars. The others, the ones who don’t kill themselves, stir up death and put on the show. It’s all part of the disease. They gossip, talk about it, actually wallow in it. Devour newspapers. Live off it. The funeral’s a major event, the mayor honoring the hanged man with a lovely speech. The students join hands in song. Mourning is declared and the flag lowered to half-mast. You’d think they were giving out a local Oscar. The tributes are a prize. You kill yourself and in exchange you get to be famous in your little town. For a few days. And a while later someone else hangs himself, and then someone else, in a vicious circle that paradoxically gives life to those dead towns with names as well known as Frostproof. An epidemic, the sociologists say. And it’s no use washing your hands. It’s no use using alcohol. Or a mask. The only way you can keep from blowing your brains out is by turning off the TV. Turning off the radio. Not reading the papers. Leaving town. Even I felt contaminated. In my opinion, what we were living in Corumbá was an outbreak too. Of another kind but just as perverse. In the papers, on the radio and TV, you heard about nothing but the pilot’s accident. The difference was that no one killed himself. You felt sorry for Dona Lu. She lost a lot of weight. I practically had to carry her to the car the times we went to church. And on those occasions, the vultures swarmed around her, all but asking for an autograph. “Does it hurt bad?” was what they wanted to know. How bad does it hurt to lose a child? Flocks in search of carrion. They enjoyed pitying that rich and beautiful woman who’d gotten fucked despite being rich and beautiful. It made them feel good. Dona Lu’s misfortune let them feel merciful. Which incidentally is another symptom of the epidemic. The pathological goodness that surfaces in the community. Instead of fever and diarrhea, all of a sudden you get this symptom, compassion.

Ela se encosta na parede e fecha os olhos. O mugido da vaca continua e continua. Não há quem consiga salvar seu filho. O homem colocou a tábua sobre o brejo e enlaçou o corpo do bezerro com uma corda. Passou a corda por trás do poste de luz alto e puxou o quanto pode. O bezerro não se moveu. Amarrou a corda na vaca e tentou que ela o puxasse, não funcionou também. Ele, a vaca e o bezerro se feriram com a corda, a mão do homem sangra. Ele amarrou a vaca no poste para não perdê-la afundada junto com o filho. É filha, uma bezerra, diz o homem. Porque você não mata ela e acaba com esse sofrimento? Ficam em silêncio. A vaca continua a mugir, não para nunca. E se ela pudesse se despedir da filha? Ajudá-la a morrer, lamber, alguma coisa?, pergunta Helena. O homem não entende o que ela quer dizer. Ela também não entende. Não tem vontade de abrir os olhos. O mugido não para. Às vezes um urubu alça voo. Depois outro pousa. Helena ouve o som das asas. O lodo que lentamente engole o bezerro não faz barulho. Helena ouve o homem riscando um fósforo, sente o cheiro de pólvora e tabaco. Eu só tenho mais uma bala e são muitos os urubus. Helena acende o seu cigarro e fecha os olhos de novo. O mugido da vaca continua, nem mais alto nem mais baixo. O da bezerra ainda existe, mal dá para ouvir. E mesmo assim ainda morre bicho, disse Helena já quase dormindo. (…) Um tiro a acorda assustada, quando vê, já está de pé protegendo seu rosto com as mãos. Adalberto matou a bezerra. Adalberto matou a bezerra. Só o pescoço e a cabecinha dela ainda estavam de fora. A cabeça cai de lado no brejo, com os olhos mortos, assustados e muito redondos. Ela tinha os cílios longos e o focinho rosa, como as bezerras têm. Um filete de sangue sai da testa, entre os chifres que não existem. Adalberto afasta-se do matadouro puxando a vaca. Guinchos e asas a farfalhar sobre o lodo trazem Helena de volta, as asas escondem o horror que deve estar acontecendo dentro do círculo negro.”

She leans against the wall and closes her eyes. The cow bellows on and on. There’s no one who can save her little one. The man put a board across the bogs and roped the body of the calf. He wrapped the rope around the tall light pole and pulled as hard as he could. The calf didn’t budge. He tied the rope to the cow and tried to get her to pull. That didn’t work either. He, the cow and the calf were hurt by the rope, the man’s hand left bleeding. He tied the cow to the pole so he wouldn’t lose her too, sinking along with her calf. It’s a girl, a heifer, the man says. Why don’t you kill her and put an end to this misery? They are silent. The cow keeps on bellowing, she never quits. And if she could say goodbye to her young one? Help her die, lick her or something? asks Helena. The man doesn’t understand what she means. Neither does she. She doesn’t feel like opening her eyes. The bellowing won’t stop. Now and then a vulture takes off. Then another lands. Helena hears the sound of the wings. The muck makes no sound as it slowly swallows the calf. Helena hears the man strike a match, smells sulfur and tobacco. I only got one shell left, and there’s plenty of vultures. Helena opens her eyes, asks for another cigarette. Adalberto, my name’s Adalberto. Helena, my pleasure. The store closed some time ago, some time since the slaughterhouse shut down. Helena lights her cigarette and closes her eyes again. The cow keeps on bellowing, no louder, no softer. The calf’s bellow is still there, you can barely hear it. And animals still die anyhow, Helena says half asleep now. (…) A shot scares her awake, before she knows it she’s on her feet, hands protecting her face. Adalberto killed the heifer. Adalberto killed the heifer. Only its neck and little head still stick out. Its head flops sideways into the swamp, its eyes dead, scared and very round. It has long lashes and a pink nose, like heifers do. Blood trickles down its head, between the horns that aren’t there. Adalberto walks away from the slaughterhouse, pulling the cow along. Helena realizes the bellowing has stopped, that Adalberto said goodbye and she just stood there. She wishes she’d said goodbye, said something, wishes she’d asked for another cigarette. Shrieks and the flapping of wings above the mire bring Helena to, the wings hiding the horror that must be happening inside the black circle.

Era linda, era filha, era única. Filha de rei. Mas de que adiantava ser princesa se não tinha com quem brincar?
Sozinha no palácio chorava e chorava. Não queria saber de bonecas, não queria saber de brinquedos. Queria uma amiga para gostar.
De noite o rei ouvia os soluços da filha. De que adianta a coroa se a filha da gente chora à noite? Decidiu acabar com tanta tristeza. Chamou o vidraceiro, chamou o moldureiro. E em segredo mandou fazer o maior espelho do reino. E em silêncio mandou colocar o espelho ao pé da cama da filha que dormia.
Quando a princesa acordou, já não estava sozinha. Uma menina linda e única olhava surpresa para ela, os cabelos ainda desfeitos do sono. Rápido saltaram as duas da cama. Rápido chegaram perto e ficaram se encontrando. Uma sorriu e deu bom-dia. A outra deu bom dia sorrindo.

At night, the king would hear his daughter's sobs. What good is the crown if your daughter cries at night? He decided to put an end to such sorrow. He called for the glassmaker; he called for the framemaker. And, secretly, he had the biggest mirror in the kingdom made. And, silently, he had the mirror placed at the foot of his sleeping daughter's bed.
When the princess awoke, she was no longer alone. A single beautiful girl looked at her in surprise, hair still mussed from sleep. Quickly, they both jumped out of bed. Quickly, they drew near and made each other's acquaintance. One smiled and said good morning. The other said good morning with a smile.
"Funny," thought one, "the other's left-handed."
And they both laughed.

O Ingo dedilhava agora uma raga de filme de terror hindu, sombria e pessimista. De pálpebras a meio pau, deixando ver só o branco dos olhos, nosso citarista climático seguia alheio ao peladismo ambiente, viajando em órbita particular, como sempre fazia, aliás. Notei que uma fresta descosturada no cavalo da sua calça de algodão cru deixava à mostra a pele penugenta de um saco livre do constrangimento de cuecas e afins. De vez em quando, a depender das oscilações de seu corpo, uma bola do saco defenestrava-se pelo rasgão, solidária -- ao menos ela -- com a nudez coletiva.
Ao confrontar o primeiro espelho, bateu-me em cheio o coice de uma revelação desconcertante. Naquele, como nos outros espelhos que fui encarando, eu me via deformado em várias e antitéticas versões do monstruoso: anão e obeso num espelho, varapau quixotesco em outro, corrugado feito tábua de lavar roupa num terceiro. Em outro ainda eu me desmembrava todo em manchas oleosas que flutuavam a esmo pela superfície reflexiva. Nesse espelho em particular vi meu pau deformado livre e solto numa das manchas desgarradas. A experiência visual de ver o desgraçado pairando solto no ar como um zepelim me causou um tipo de abalo emocional, eu diria, em meio a um labirinto de sensações conflitantes. E se o meu pau fosse prum lado, eu pro outro, e nunca mais que a gente se reencontrasse? Que seria do homem sem o pau, do pau sem o homem? Seríamos mais felizes assim, eu e o meu pau, cada um seguindo seu próprio caminho pela vida afora?
Uma hora lá, tive um insight de arrepiar. Saquei que aqueles reflexos disformes não eram distorções das formas do real, como naquela casa de espelhos do parque de diversões no final d' A dama de Xangai, do Orson Welles, mas meras correções da ilusão de normalidade do ego. Aquele monstro mutante refletido nos espelhos pirados, ondulando, estufando, se afilando achatando desmembrando, aquilo espelhava a minha verdadeira natureza -- minha e de todos ali. Eu era, sempre fui, uma ameba multiforme e só agora me dava conta disso. Meu medo era de que aquelas imagens torturadas do meu verdadeiro eu saltassem fora dos espelhos pra assumir a realidade -- a minha realidade. Cara, cê acredita que eu fiquei gelado de pavor? A turma em volta ria às pelancas despregadas das ondulações, inchaços, esquartejamentos e sanfonadas que seus corpos performatizavam nos espelhos, mas eu me espojava no pânico de um pesadelo que ia se tornando cada vez mais real para mim.
Depois de alguns minutos desse exercício de autodesconstrução identitária ao som da cítara do Ingo, cujas distorções melódicas pareciam agora traduzir as especulares, la Samayana esclareceu:
"Esses espelhos, como vocês podem ver, mostram o quanto a realidade pode ser ilusória, inclusive a realidade física do nosso próprio corpo. Qual dessas imagens reflete quem eu sou de verdade? A resposta só pode ser uma: todas. Portanto, nenhuma. Porque não existe o eu, que não passa de uma ficção presunçosa. Eu não sou, nós não somos -- nada."

Ingo was strumming out some Hindi horror movie type raga now, gloomy and pessimistic. Lids at half mast, only the whites of his eyes showing, our climatic sitar player paid no heed to the ambient nakedness, traveling along in his own orbit, as he always did in fact. I noticed that the rise of his raw cotton pants had ripped at the seam, exposing the tufted skin of a sack set free from the constraints of underwear and the like. Now and then, depending on the movement of his body, one of his balls would defenestrate itself out the opening, in a display of solidarity – on its part at least – with the collective nudity.
When I faced into the first mirror, I felt the kick of a disconcerting revelation right in my stomach. As in the other mirrors I was to confront, I saw myself disfigured into myriad antithetical versions of monstrousness: an obese dwarf in one, a Quixotic bean pole in another, rippled like a washboard in a third. In yet another, I was completely dismembered, set adrift in oily blobs across the reflective surface. In this particular mirror, I saw my disfigured cock free and unfettered in one of the floating patches of oil. In the midst of this maze of conflicting sensations, I’d say the visual experience of seeing the S O B suspended in the air like a zeppelin came as something of an emotional shock. And if my cock were to go off one way, and me another, never the twain to meet again? Where would man be without his cock, and a cock without his man? Would we be happier like that, my cock and me, each on his own path for the rest of his life?
At one point I was struck by a mind-blowing insight. It dawned on me that those deformed reflections were not distorted shapes of reality, like in the house of mirrors at that amusement park at the end of Orson Welles’ The Lady from Shanghai. They were simply rectifications of our ego’s deluded sense of normalcy. The mutant monster reflected in those flipped out mirrors, undulating bloating thinning flattening dismembering, mirrored my true nature — mine and everyone else’s there. I was and always have been a polymorphous ameba but only now did I realize it. I was afraid those anguished images of my real self would leap out of their mirrors and actually take over reality—my reality. Man, I gotta tell you, I was petrified. All around me everyone was splitting their sides laughing at the performance artistry of their mirrored bodies, undulating, expanding, splintering, corrugating, while I flailed about in the panic of a nightmare that was becoming ever more real to me.
Some minutes into this exercise in self-deconstruction of identity to the sound of Ingo’s sitar, whose melodic distortions now seemed to interpret those specular reflections, La Samayana explained:
“As you can see, these mirrors show just how much reality can be an illusion, even the physical reality of our own bodies. Which of these images reflects who I really am? There can be only one answer: all of them. And therefore, none of them. Because there is no ‘I’, which is no more than a presumptuous piece of fiction. I am nothing. We are nothing. You are — not.”

Subir a serra de onibus é diferente. Subir a serra de onibus, a noite, é diferente. E se é noite de julho, e você vai na janela sem ninguém ao seu lado, e no onibus ninguém fala e você só ouve o ronco suave do motor (onibus novo), e se não há neblina, e se no seu peito há alga como um piano tocando Chopin por conta própria, então tudo é tão diferente que é quase como se o mundo tivesse sido criado há coisa de vinte e quatro horas.
Alguém te contou que ontem saiu e chegou em casa às cinco e dormiu até uma da tarde e almoçou macarrão com salsichas e carne moida. Alguém te ensinou a dizer konnichi wa, uma saudação em japonês. Alguém te olhou com simpatia, outro alguém com curiosidade (você provavelmente estava mordendo a boca e fazendo caretas enquanto lia, no metro), um taxista te olhou com certa má vontade porque a corrida era para perto. Alguem te olhou mais insistentemente, com um olhar de perigo, e voce quase sucumbiu. Tudo isso foi hoje, durante o dia.
E agora você sobe a serra de onibus e a sua alma é feita de macarrão com salsichas e metrô e um livro e konnichi wa. Subir a serra de onibus é diferente. De noite. O ceu é preto com estrelas lançadas a esmo, muitas, tantas, e as árvores são cinzentas e às vezes passam bem rente a janela do onibus. Num trecho elas se vão de todo e você vê as cidades lá embaixo, grumos de luzes que são como pequenos incêndios organizados, e o incêndio imenso (incontrolavel, mas pacificado) da maior de todas elas, o Rio, numa faixa horizontal e brilhante, de onde você saiu no onibus das nove.
De repente você se pergunta quantos são os metros de altiude, quantos sao os quilômetros de distância. Mas que importa, se o mundo tem vinte e quatro horas de idade e se é aqui, neste espaço entre, que tudo acontece

Someone told you they went out yesterday and got back home at five and slept until one in the afternoon and had macaroni with ground beef and diced wieners for lunch. Someone taught you how to say konnichi wa, a Japanese greeting. Someone looked at you kindly, someone else with curiosity (you were probably chewing your lips and making faces while you read in the subway), a taxi driver gave you a bit of a nasty look because it was a short run. And now you are taking the bus up into the mountains and your soul is made of macaroni with ground beef and metro and a book and konnichi wa. Taking the bus up into the mountains is different. At night. The sky is dark, with stars, oh so many stars, flung haphazardly across it, and the trees are gray and sometimes pass right outside the windowpane. Along one stretch they drop completely away and you see the cities down below, clumps of light like tiny organized fires, and the biggest of them all, the huge fire, uncontrollable but pacified, is Rio, a flat sparkling strip that you left behind on the nine o’clock bus.
And suddenly you wonder: how many meters up, how many kilometers away? But what does it matter if the world is twenty-four hours old, and if it is here, in this space between, that everything happens.

Quando o sinal abre, minhas mãos custam um pouco a retomar o mundo que buzina lá fora, implorando esmolas. Sinto o motor do carro afagando o asfalto e venho de alguma coisa rumo a outra que talvez não esteja tão longe assim.
