Translation - English Beyond Beauty - TAIWAN FROM ABOVE
About the Movie
“Beyond Beauty - Taiwan From Above” costs almost 100 million to produce, making it the most expensive documentary ever made in Taiwan. Chi, Po-Lin, the director, spent 400 hours in three years on a helicopter, documenting Taiwan completely in aerial photography, so that Taiwan can be seen like never before on the big screen.
The movie is narrated by Wu Nien-jen, with music recorded in Prague with Prague Symphony Orchestra and composer Ricky Ho, winner of Golden Horse award for best original film score.
Behind the Scenes
Chi has been doing aerial films for over two decades, during which, the idea of making an aerial feature film on Taiwan has slowly started to grow. In the beginning of 2009, Chi spent 3 million in savings to film Taiwan on a 30-hour trip around the island, using professional equipment rented from abroad. Then in 2009, while filming the post-typhoon scene after Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan, Chi realized that it takes more than just static images for viewers to feel what Taiwan was really going through. Chi saw so many stories worth telling even after his first film project about Taiwan, so, he decided to borrow 30 million on purchasing the equipment to shoot Taiwan’s first aerial documentary.
Chi is a film enthusiast who has been a photographer for magazines and businesses since 1988. After 1990, he was responsible for taking aerial photos of the construction process of all major infrastructures in Taiwan, and has been documenting Taiwan’s landscape ever since.
