PS: As I live in an area where there are often power surges and brownouts, I usually even switch off my PC when I nip out to the shops; but I went out just now to buy cat food and left it on. I felt quite daring and everything was still in perfect working order when I got back.

why should I? It doesn't overheat if I let is sleep, does it? If an important project is running on my parallels/Trados, it's a bit faster to get back to it, right? Otherwise, it's a non-issue.

What you're overlooking is that when you have a superterabytic triple-screen nanowotsit backup hyperdrive thingy, it takes more energy to boot it up in the morning than it would use overnight.
It might also be problematic for the 24-hour-a-day brigade.

But I must admit that I also put my beloved no-name desktop computer in hibernation mode when I have to carry on working on the same job with many windows open the next morning. It is relatively harmless on the planet, and I turn off stand-by screens and other IT paraphernalia.
Otherwise I have to restart Windows and every app and reopen every file in the morning, and I waste a lot of minutes in the process, losing my focus and having to get another carcigenous coffee to withstand growing ... I don't know if it's personal superstition and ignorance or a valid point, but I started making an effort to turn off my computer every night (or to officially restart it in the morning when I'd forgotten), because I though that always leaving it on causes problems with automatic updates and other computer stuff.
If that is the case, it also quickly leads to a vicious cycle in which very rarely turning your computer off leads to its becoming ever slower and taking more and more tim... I always turn off my computer at the end of the day. Often I'll shut it down at lunchtime or if I pop out/away from my desk, too.
There's no need to leave it on, using up electricity all night. Plus there is something satisfying about shutting it all down and walking away. I can always check and reply to any emails on my phone if necessary.
However, my computer is pretty speedy so starting it up in the morning really is no trouble at all. This wasn't the case a few year... See more I always turn off my computer at the end of the day. Often I'll shut it down at lunchtime or if I pop out/away from my desk, too.

Sleep mode
If I'm multitasking and my on-screen setup is fiddly and complicated.
However, only one night at the longest as the lads at my regular computer shop advise me not to. I had to send in one of my PCs for repair recently most likely because I left it in sleep mode for four days on the trot.

If I have a project that takes several days, I never turn it off until it's finished and delivered. Saves me a lot of time and effort, because every time I sit a the computer, it's all there: my reference documentation, dictionaries, etc. that I opened specifically for that project. My PC never overheats.
