I can no longer upgrade my software since the operating system on my laptop is Windows XP and this is considered to be obsolete. Accordingly, it is no longer possible to acquire new software, such as the latest versions of Trados for it. I find this extremely annoying, as my laptop is still working perfectly and I don't like being "nudged" in this way into buying a replacement.

Only when I really, really have to, or want to. If my setup is already working, I prefer not to have to update it (not broke don't fix). I've lost count of the number of times that upgrades I've been cajoled into or had rammed down my throat have turned out to be an inconvenience rather than an improvement.

For example, Office versions later than 2010 won't work with WFC and Excel; my CD dictionaries won't work with anything higher than XP, so are now obsolete ... I could go on, but

Mood Jul 19, 2018

It depends on my mood, needs, finances and other factors. I have actually pre-purchased the future version of the CAT tool I use, not something I would normally do.

As a rule, when my computer technician says that it is absolutely necessary. She has been providing me with all hardware, software and consumables and doing all updating and maintenance online. When there is a problem that can’t be fixed online she visits me.

For free software (the majority of what I use), I usually update as soon as a release is ready and approved for my OS, except for those that are considered unstable. Unless I'm working on a large assignment and the update has to do with a critical piece of software, in which case I'll delay until the job is done on the off chance that the update breaks something I need.

For proprietary software, well I guess there's only one I use and it's a dictionary/reviser so I don't feel the need to buy every new release. I tend to take a while to apply patches too since it only tells me there's one available when I launch it, and when I do I'm busy with work so I don't want to wait for it to update.

As for OS upgrades, I tend to skip versions nowadays but I'll probably switch to the latest long-term support release soon and do a fresh install while I'm at it. My kernel is pretty outdated at this point.

Don't touch it, if it's working fine!
Just don't tinker with it

So, I upgrade soft only when there's (1) a new, stable, (2) better (for me) version, which (3) doesn't require another 'Service Pack'; or (4) a free software counterpart.

Usually it requires from an hour to a week to test something in VirtualBox and decide how worthy it is for me.

I hate uprgades Jul 20, 2018

When I at last know how to use a piece of SW, wham! comes an upgrade and suddenly, I know nothing. I especially hate the latest version of Skype - I upgraded it on my main computer and it has never worked properly. Now my notebook is prompting me that the old (working!) version will be discontinued. What will I do?
Why do they do that, anyway? New features? Frankly, how many features of, let's say, Word, do you actually use?

CAT (MemoQ) - I updated twice so far, so I've paid three times a price that I think is way above what it's worth, but necessary. This time, I will not upadate it, because I'm a bit frustrated with some bugs that are never solved and the helpdesk is absolutely incompetent.

Windows: Since I updated XP to Win 8.1 and regretted myself immensely, I learned not to update Windows for at least one year, to make sure it's worth it. For Windows 10, I waited more than one year.

Office: My license is only valid for one year now, so I have no choice but to update yearly.

Other software: practically never.
