Gifts? Never in over 30 years! I’m not surprised as, interestingly, there are translators who have no idea that this day exists and yet it was launched in 1953 if my memory serves me right…
Gifts??? I don't know why all are shocked to hear the question. As i can guess, all my fellow friends are taking gifts in the sense of some mememto🌟, flowers 🌷and cards 😁..but have you considerd the translation proposal ,u get on same day? I guess that is also a reward for your excellent work....that makes you continuous in demand. So yes friend! I get project on the very same day and took it as a gift for my livelihood. 😊 | | | Debora d'Amato (X) Italy Local time: 08:22 English to Italian + ...

... but that is only fair, because it has never occurred to me to send the fellow translators in my life gifts or good wishes for the occasion. What would be an appropriate gift? A handmade bilingual nonsense poem? Surely a rose or an edible treat won't cut it ... | | | Michael Harris Germany Local time: 08:22 Member (2006) German to English
I am lucky if I get a birthday or Christmas present☺ | | | Adam Warren France Local time: 08:22 Member (2005) French to English Unrecognised | Sep 23, 2018 |
In my family, a translator is viewed with the amused condescension humans evince towards the outlandish exertions of a dung-beetle, propelling its incongruous load with ungainly effort in the wrong direction. One notable exception was when I sent my revered father a copy of a published translation of mine, which elicited the only compliment he ever vouchsafed me professionally: "pretty excellent". However, his rather dismissive attitude to my skills proved constructive in sharpening... See more In my family, a translator is viewed with the amused condescension humans evince towards the outlandish exertions of a dung-beetle, propelling its incongruous load with ungainly effort in the wrong direction. One notable exception was when I sent my revered father a copy of a published translation of mine, which elicited the only compliment he ever vouchsafed me professionally: "pretty excellent". However, his rather dismissive attitude to my skills proved constructive in sharpening my critical faculties in the field of law. Examples were the use of "whether", "either" or "otherwise" in drafting, and advice to learn the law, as well as sounding an imperious note of caution about how and when to use "domicile" in English. I suppose that must be my father's legacy to me: after practising as a barrister for some 20 years, he retired as a Queen's Bench Master, so I gathered a few crumbs of counsel from a lifetime of lively, congenial discourse with my sire. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. ▲ Collapse

I had never heard of this day until I joined Proz.com and I never hear or see anything about it outside this site, so of course my family and friends are unaware there is such a day. I always forget about it the moment it is over. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have you received gifts from friends or family for International Translation Day?
