Mod cons Oct 17, 2018

Sure, you can do everything from a computer these days, but I do feel pangs of nostalgia when I recall the daily bracing walk around Prague's agencies with my floppy disks and briefcase stuffed with paper. Much more personal and kept me fit, at least. You know those heartwarming videos where they show deaf kids who have been given implants and you get to see their reaction on hearing for the first time? That was me and my first email. Amazing.

But don't tell my clients, or they will start doing the math.

32 years with breaks Oct 18, 2018

I started in 1986, but I spent 11 years in a place where not even the native language was well spoken, working in other areas, with no perspective at all for a translator, since not even the internet existed. After that, I worked yet another 6 years as a part-time translator.
Anyway, I'm still from that group that started with a typewriter, deliveries in person and hours at the library, in addition to the thorough difficulty to get any jobs.

Long enough Oct 18, 2018

I answered more than 30 years, but of course the correct answer is "Other" because there is no such thing as a translation/interpreting "industry".

Please allow me to disagree, Philip. We tend to associate the term "industry" to manufacturing or industrial facilities. This is a trend of Greek and Latin languages. In English, "industry" is commonly used to refer to a "sector", instead of manufacturing. Every niche of the market is considered an "industry" for economists and financists. So, there is a translation industry, as well as for any other type of service.
