I'm not really stressed at the moment Nov 22, 2018

Over the years, I’ve learned to say no (and be very picky with what I accept) and to be very organized (work-wise), as a result I don’t get stressed very easily. Even so, chasing late payments, getting too many project offers at once or no project offers for a while, receiving jobs that look straightforward but prove to be more than I bargained for can still make me reach a boiling point…

Brexit Nov 22, 2018

I am stressed about Brexit, because I worry whether there is a future for translation into British English as a result of the dire political situation in the UK.

Brexit Nov 22, 2018

I'm also stressed about Brexit, more specifically the loss of my onward freedom of movement as a Brit in an EU27 Member State and how that will affect my right to continue working with clients outside my Member State of residence (all my clients are outside Portugal where I reside).

I've got the necessary backup plans in place, but it has been a very, very expensive exercise.

Brexit Nov 22, 2018

I'm in with the Brexit-worriers.

Most of my clients are in the UK. Will they prefer using UK-based translators after March 30th?
They're telling me their ENG>FRE translation demand will remain the same, but what about their choice of service providers (with the extra paperwork involved with ordering the translations from an EU provider)? I see one has opened an office in Paris. What about the others?

For family reasons, moving back to the UK is not feasible at the moment. I didn't even really consider applying for a UK passport back when I could have done so (I thought it would be nice to have one, but since it wasn't absolutely necessary, I never got around to it).

How could anyone have foreseen today's situation?
Right after the Brexit vote, when I enquired about transferring my pension fund money to France, I was told "on account of to the Brexit situation, we are not allowing these transfers any longer".

Like they say, "hope for the best and prepare for the worst".

Finance Nov 22, 2018

All my bills are paid, and I owe nothing, except for some money my son lent me. However, I haven't been able to save any money for a while. I have no extras, if I want to make a trip with my wife, for example. And we are approaching the worst time of the year in terms of income.
I'm not really stressed, but not happy either with this situation. Working just to pay the bills has never been a pleasant situation.

Brexit too Nov 22, 2018

My clients are all in the eurozone but who's to say they're gonna still need British English once the UK has become totally irrelevant in the global scheme of things?

Large project + family Nov 22, 2018

Right now, my biggest worry is how to find time for a very large legal project - 110K - on top of a few smaller ones plus take care of our son while preparing for a trip to Europe.

In terms of politics, we keep changing Prime Ministers but, luckily, it does not affect our industry.

For once in my life, I am not stressed Nov 22, 2018

I recently started a 1 year contract as translator-reviser and I get to work from home. Best of both worlds.
Otherwise, it was money that worried me the most, especially because of non-paying clients.

I could say both - family and financial Nov 22, 2018

On one side, family vs. finance have been an issue or maybe a struggle. :/ As Mario Freitas pinpoints: Working just to pay the bills has never been a pleasant situation.

That calls for a change.

The situation in Brazil can be considered anything but normal. I'm considering we have survived just paying bills for five years, since PT stopped the country in 2013, but if we are able to keep our debt at zero in such situation, when things go back to normal, we'll do just fine.
The only doubt now is if the new government will actually fix the economy or push the flush prepared by the previous government. Let us pray!
