It's only natural for older colleagues cycle out while younger ones enter the field.

For me, the format of the work has changed a bit. I no longer accept all the jobs that I did when I was younger. I prefer long projects that keep me busy for a week to a month; I like to get deep into the subject matter. I'm happy to let others do the rest.

I’ve no idea how many more years I’ll be working, but I’m approaching the end of my career and I like the idea of helping new colleagues feel right at home… So, they aren’t a challenge or an obstacle, they’re welcome and I hope that they find the profession as satisfying and worthwhile as I do!

I think established professionals are a challenge for newcomers: they set the standard and are not letting go of their prized clients in a hurry.

The only challenge for established professionals is that newcomers may undercut their rates in order to get work. Hmm that is actually a huge challenge!

Nachts ist es kälter als draußen, und zu Fuß ist weiter als über den Berg.
At night it is colder than outdoors, and on foot the distance is longer than across the hill.

(A German reaction to logic fails)

They are colleagues, the vast majority of whom aren't my competitors (other language combinations and/or specialisations, or just because we do not try to snatch away each other's clients). I'm always happy to help out beginning translators with tips and advice.

No at all May 4, 2019

A think is the other way around since new translators have a hard time getting into projects for the "no" experience fact.

New people come with new logic and new preferences. Some new translators I know, they hate translating about social determinants of public health as much as I hate translating for gaming. We're happy together.
