Novel translations are a dream come true for me. I love it. Merry Christmas! | | | Michael Harris Germany Local time: 13:24 Member (2006) German to English
Actually a silly question. If I did not like it as freelancer, then I would do something else, "?". Happy Christmas to all!
I started my career as a part-time generalist translator (working mostly in economics, education and training, hospitality and tourism) and then in 1986 I became a staff translator working within a European Institution which issues opinions on EU legislation in a wide range of areas, from social affairs to economic and monetary policy, taxation, climate change, migration and asylum, and sustainability. Perfume! My current obsession is reading books and articles on perfume. It's fascinating to see how writers are able to conjure up the sense of smell through words alone. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 13:24 Spanish to English + ... Never thought about it | Dec 24, 2019 |
Although now that you mention it, my answer would be yes. | | | Yes, but I wish I also worked in... | Dec 24, 2019 |
I have being doing subtitle translations ever since I entered college and always loved it. That being said, I'd love to translate texts in the environement or social sciences fields, those are two things I read a lot about. | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 13:24 French to English
My fields of expertise are basically the subjects I'm interested in. I wouldn't mind getting into literary translation, I would be interested in doing more in the field of sustainable development. I'd like more transcreation too. But I wouldn't be able to do more in any given field without having to give up something of what I already do, so it's not like I'm pushing hard to do any of that. I do occasionally translate boring press releases announcing new hires and new services, mostly as a favour to agencies who otherwise send me fascinating stuff. But it's rare enough not to be a problem. ▲ Collapse

Environmental field. This is my true passion for many years.
For decades my fields of expertise were public health, medicine, and the biomedical sciences. I'm finding that progress in these fields is leaving me somewhat out of date. While I can still handle most of the work from my regular clients, some of the offers I'm getting from new clients are beyond my comfort zone. On the other hand, I have been gradually migrating toward environmental science, forestry, carbon capture, and climate change and anything that has to do with water - watersheds, dams, irrigation, water treatment, water supply, sanitation, etc. - and I find these areas very interesting. I will always be a generalist as well. I accept any text if I feel comfortable with the subject matter and the style of language. This availability has led me to work in a number of interesting areas without actually specializing in them. ▲ Collapse | | | Marie Karlsson United Kingdom Local time: 12:24 English to Swedish + ...
