Mine have risen... Jun 28, 2005

because I have a part-time job now. I haven't managed to secure anything with my new rates yet though. I've lost one job from a 4cts/word agency (they don't even understand the concept of a translator having rates). But only time will tell whether I've made the right decision.

It's the two-way culling process. They cull you but you cull them as well.

I mean, 4 cents, 60 days to pay, killer deadlines, come on, people have done better than that.

Isn't it surprising that 11% of the voters stated their rates have fallen? Jun 29, 2005

I find it quite surprising. I mean, to me it sounds normal that rates don't rise in a one-year period, but to fall??

I believe it would be interesting if any of you who voted that your rates have fallen explained why... Or any of you have any idea why that may have happened?

Looks like you've figured which agency it was then!

I would also be interest in hearing from those whose rates have declined. Can you explain?

Deflation in Germany Jun 29, 2005

Actually, my rates have gone up, not down, but I read in the newspaper that we are supposed to be heading for a deflation in Germany, because people won't buy things, and everyone wants to pay less for everything all the time. I would assume that, in that situation, rates do sometimes go down (at least in certain areas of the country).

My rates have held relatively steady, Jun 30, 2005

but actually they have not increased since 1998 when I started translating. So really no increase in 7 years.
I have a few clients who appreciate the work I do, and they are willing to pay more.
But overall I think the pressure is on because we're competing on a more global level, including countries where our rates might be considered very high, even though they are reasonable here.
