Chris Ellison Nov 19, 2008:
Intrusions or Intrusives? I'm afraid that Ricardo is right, you can find examples of "intrusives" in the literature. Unfortunately this is due to bad editing and the fact that not all geologists have a profound knowledge of grammar. :( "Intrusion" is a noun and can be plural; "intrusive" is an adjective and can never take an "s". Below are two examples of correct usage. :) <P>-<P>

"There also exist subvolcanic bodies in the form of minor intrusives."

Since "intrusives" and "minor intrusives" are two of the categories by which geologists classified volcanic and subvolcanic material, which presents itself in different FORMS: lava, sedimentary rock, metasedimentary rock, intrusive rock, minor intrusives, etc. These are all forms of volcanic material.

Hope it helps!

I see what u mean now. A Google search showed they're ALSO called "intrusions". Geologist use both names for it, not just "intrusions". Here's just one of many refs for "intrusives": http://anomalyresources.com.au/projects.php?code=Crater_Moun...
