Contesto:

Si sapeva che per le sue pozioni utilizzava molte piante officinali che coltivava nel suo orto, ma anche altre che gli fornivano i frati, e strane essenze che provenivano dal lontano Oriente e dalle "Indie", delle quali sembra stesse sperimentado per primo le proprietà.

Good point That's possible but it's unclear. Perhaps there's something elsewhere in the text, that we don't know about, that might clarify that point. It's important to get it right ! (Although I don't know about "enjoying" unless you're reading something into the text.....)

He was trying out on himself first? I do wonder whether the text is saying that he was 'trying his own remedies' and enjoying the effects himself??

I would replace the comma with a full stop and start a new sentence:
"It seems he was the first to investigate their properties." Or: "experiment with their properties."

I think the meaning may be that he was trying these substances on himself first, but I'm not totally sure. Would need to read more of the context.
