Spanish term

personas cercanas

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Leadership and diversity
SPAIN. From a text about child obesity. I know what they mean, but can't think of a way to express it without paraphrasing or sounding naff.

"• Las familias y personas cercanas debe prestar apoyo, aceptación e incentivos"

people close to them

Their family and people close to them must...

I don't think "friends" is quite accurate enough. This could include teachers, perhaps, and friends of their parents rather than friends of the child.

And a perfectly good option! If you're worried about it being more long-winded than the Spanish, well it has one less syllable ;)

Note from asker:
I've used "friends" as a placeholder... But something like this may be the only option...
The author likes "friendship networks"... :/

I have to disagree, Phil, it feels totally natural to me, and there are many examples of the phrase on the Interweb

close friends

Whole expression -relatives and close friends-.
Spanisg -personas- is rather neutral, but the adjective -cercanas- justifies the switch to 'friends'.

Spanish term (edited): Las familias y personas cercanas

Family, friends, and other involved persons

Or "parties" instead of persons.

I think that this is an elegant way of putting it that captures the original meaning while avoiding the awkward "Families and persons close to them" implied in Simon's suggestion.

Note that the singular "family" is to be used in English for "Las familias" (given that the reference is to the family of each child of concern).
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : "Involved persons" sounds a bit formal, but "family, friends and others" would work.

Perhaps so. This is an instance where the Spanish "personas cercanas" or "allegados" (which could have been used here) does not have a concise English equivalent. Thank you, Phil.
