Glass is shaped by blowing, casting or pressing.
Blowing:
Glass blowing is a long-established process where air is blown into a glass mass through a long metal pipe.
Glass can be mould-blown or free-blown.
Blowing is done in a hot shop normally in team work. A team consists of master blowers and parison makers that start the blowing by taking the glass (parison) onto the pipe. The master blower does the most demanding part in blowing process.
Because glass is extremely hot throughout the making process, a lot of different tools are needed in glass making.
The most important tool is the blowing pipe made out of stainless steel. It is a hollow tube through which air is blown into a bubble inside the glass.
The products that are blown into a mould normally need cutting and polishing work afterwards.
