A specimen subsequently selected from the paratypes to serve as the holotype in the absence of the bona fide holotype. A single specimen subsequently selected from a cotype or syntype series; equivalent of a holotype.

"Om författaren har en grupp individer där ingen särskild är viktigare än de andra som underlag för beskrivningen är alla dessa individer ”syntyper”. Detta anses numera inte så bra, och därför kan det hända att det bland syntyperna i efterhand väljs ut en individ som då skall vara särskilt typiskt. Denna blir då en slags holotyp, men eftersom den inte är det från början kallas den ”lektotyp”. De andra syntyperna blir ”paralektotyper”. "
