I'd like to ask about the meaning of this phrase in the particular context. The extract starts with an exchange concerning an American soap opera All my children:
"A: Liz still think she's married to Don?
B: Yeah, that's for sure. Something will happen such as a fight or else she'll have a fall or a brain tumour (laughter...)."
And then there's a comment:
"In this we see the knowing relationship that soap viewers have with their genre, a relationship that vacillates between closeness and distance, precisely that which is playful."
As I indicated at the beginning I'm not sure what this phrase might refer to - the relationship is playful?

they see the storylines and plots like a game
It's fun to speculate what a character will do next or what will happen. On one hand, viewers get attached to these characters, as though they were real people; on the other hand, they expect them to go through traumas, die, have incredibly strange problems, etc. that give them something to talk about with their friends other than work, football and taxes. People love to play "what if" games and to project scenarios, especially if they have nothing personal at stake.

the fact that the relationship vacillates between closeness and distance
I don’t think it is the relationship per se, but the vacillation between closeness and distance.

the relationship that viewers have with the soap opera is playful.
Rephrasing:
The above shows that the relationship that soap viewers have with their genre is playful, precisely because it vacillates between being one of closeness and one of distance.
[Close: because the viewer keeps informed on all the story details. Distant: because they joke about the likelihood of Liz getting a brain tumour.]
