I even think that "possible" is not used here in its standard sense such as this sentence: one possible reason is that he does not have any money.

I could not find any other instances of this word in the text.

possible is correct here

I don't see any awkwardness in using possible here, a region thought to be depleted in uranium. It's used as in the sense of the sentence which you wrote above as a sample.

agree magdadh : Yes, 'possible' as in ''area of (reactor) where uranium could be depleted/where depleted uranium could be located". Not sure if it makes sense substantively in context...
