Selected
choice of the family name
Though "-führung" is more "utilization" or "use" in English, as I understand this sentence, it means the choice of the name the partners select as their family name.

choice of surname
Covers the surnames which (here) the partners choose to be called by - which can be different, e.g. if the wife chooses to keep her maiden name. In such a case they have to choose a Familienname as well - i.e. a surname for any children they may have. So I recommend surname rather than family name to avoid confusion.

: Surname is a bit odd in American English, but fine.

: This might actually be the better option, given that children of that marriage may have a family name that differs from the surname (last name, if you like) of one parent (who under German law can also keep their pre-marriage name).
