German term

absicherung/Sicherstellen

German to English Tech/Engineering Manufacturing
Context: Technologieabsicherung in "Technologiemonitoring/-absicherung und Vorbereitung von Patentanmeldungen".
Fachkonzepte für Bauteile entwickeln und Realisierbarkeit absichern.
Bestimmen, Sicherstellen und Aufrechterhalten der logistischen Systemeigenschaften.
Zeichnungen bzw. Datensätze kontrollieren, Dokumentation sicherstellen oder veranlassen.

The usage of absichern and sicherstellen seems rather odd throughout this document.

This is in the job description for an R&D researcher for a large company in the aerospace industry.

Discussion

David Williams (asker) Jun 3, 2009:
VARS Maybe there were some variables after the ? (after .html) in the ULR deactivating the button?
Steffen Walter Jun 3, 2009:
No "reply" button Samuel, there is no direct "reply" button. What you need to do to respond to asker's notes submitted to your answer is use the "Add note" (i.e. add a note to your answer) button/field provided above the peer grades. There it says: "You may add a note to your explanation:".
Samuel Hunt Jun 3, 2009:
I'm not sure what happened, I just couldn't find a "reply" button to push...
David Williams (asker) Jun 3, 2009:
Ah! I see. ProZ playing up again?
Samuel Hunt Jun 3, 2009:
Indeed you did. I just couldn't find the right button to push to respond to your note, so I stuck it all in a discussion post.
David Williams (asker) Jun 3, 2009:
I thought I asked you that Q in the note under your answer...?
Samuel Hunt Jun 3, 2009:
"How about guarantee, e.g.: "Determining, guaranteeing and maintaining the logistical system properties"?

I think "guaranteeing" would work as well - it's always good to think creatively with words like "absichern" and "sicherstellen".

Selected

ensure / safeguard

Two troublesome words that never sound quite right in translation.
For the examples you cited, I would put:

"... ensure .... feasibility"

and "Determination, safeguarding and maintenance..."

Hope that helps.
Note from asker:
How about guarantee, e.g.: "Determining, guaranteeing and maintaining the logistical system properties"?

technology validation

not so sure - i have a "feeling" this fits here
Note from asker:
Is that really what Technologieabsicherung means though? I'm not 100% convinced, although it sounds good.
