German term

Absaugung

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Die Steuerung funktioniert mit Absaugung, das heißt, der Fahrer kann innerhalb kürzester Zeit die Fahrt antreten.

The control device is equipped with a suction system??, which means that the driver can start his journey within a very short time.?

(Es geht hier um ein Schlauchsystem für Planendächer, welches eine sichere, schnelle und kostengünstige Beseitigung von Wasserseen und Eisplatten auf LKW-Dächer ermöglicht).

Vielen Dank!

Johannes Gleim Mar 6, 2012:
Last week I visited a client, who manufactures heater cords for heating tubes and pipes, and other equipment. Perhaps this is the technique used here for de-icing lorries, too. Warm water or hot air would also work. But I cannot imagine that this equipment is installed on the lorry, but the garage may be equipped accordingly.
martina1974 (asker) Feb 29, 2012:
thank you for your help. unfortunately I don't have any pictures of this system.
Michael Harris Feb 29, 2012:
Hi Johannes I do a lot of translating for lorry trailer companies in Europe, but have not heard of the system being mentioned here. Martina, maybe some picture or link to take a quick look at it?
Johannes Gleim Feb 29, 2012:
A good question. May be also possible by using heater cords for melting ice before extracting the molten ice (water).
Michael Harris Feb 29, 2012:
How can you suck away sheets of ice from a roof using hoses?

Is this a system that is fitted to the vehicle, or a construction that the vehicle drives through with extraction ducts (or similar), similar to a car wash?
Have seen such things being used for clearing snow of thw roofs of buses. The only other system that I know of being installed is in Krone and Cargobull trailers that they lift the roof
Johannes Gleim Feb 28, 2012:
Absaugung oder Ansaugung? Durch Googeln läßt sich leicht herausfinden, dass Absaugen sich praktisch nur auf Stäube und Gase bezieht. Wasser würde ich nicht absaugen, sondern aufsaugen oder ansaugen (to suck, to soak, to prime).

Auch "Die Steuerung funktioniert mit Absaugung" ist mißverständlich ausgedrückt. Gemeint ist, dass das Ansaugen/Aufsaugen gesteuert wird.
Ingeborg Gowans (X) Feb 28, 2012:
i would go with (central) suction system (according to dict.cc)
jccantrell Feb 28, 2012:
vacuum might work.

The controller works with a vacuum...
or
the controller uses vacuum ...
Trudy Peters Feb 28, 2012:
Siphoning comes to mind.

(removal by) suction

Come to think of it, suction fits quite nicely here.

Priming a pump
Liquid and slurry pumps can lose prime and this will require the pump to be primed by adding liquid to the pump and inlet pipes to get the pump started. Loss of "prime" is usually due to ingestion of air into the pump.

Depending on the kind of pump you're using and the length of intake line, priming your system in the usual way — by pouring buckets of water down into the pump and pipe — can be slow, messy and infuriating.
