Japanese term

メリハリ

Japanese to English Marketing Cosmetics, Beauty Lips
This appears in a description of lip liner: 唇のメリハリを効かせた厳選された色揃え, and later in: 唇にメリハリをもたせる。。。 Is this referring literally to the grooves or "undulations" in the lips?? Or is it closer to other definitions like "lively" or "nicely varied"? Or maybe something else entirely? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for responding to my mumbling, Shannon. We translators must improvise appropriately, case-by-case, when we come across this kind of things.
Shannon Morales (asker) Dec 4, 2006:
Thanks for your comment, Susan. You're absolutely right --- Since there's little we can do to stop this kind of vocabulary "misappropriation," I just wish online dictionaries would keep up with the changes in usage. It's bewildering when the "true" definitions are all you can find, and they don't make any sense at all in the context.
humbird Dec 2, 2006:
Alas, 日本語の乱れ .... deterioration of literacy.
humbird Dec 2, 2006:
This is not to give you an answer, but my not-so-modest opinion. The original & authentic usage of メリハリ is "intonation", " modulation", and/or "tone".... something to do with music.
This is often used in this kind of context today but totally incorrect.

(gives) definition

Hi Shannon!

Glova gives "modulation," ALC gives "sharp" for 'メリハリのある.'

For your first example, I might say something like "gives definition to" or "accentuates the curves (shape?) of the lips."
For the second one, it might help to see the rest of the sentence, but possibly something along those lines...

Good luck! :-)

Thanks, Troy, although lip liner is usually applied prior to lipstick (err, girly stuff, I'm afraid... ;-) )
