Probably 検出器 and 投・受光器 should have been separated by 「、」.

Because 「芯だし」 applies to both devices.

Align

There may be (or should have been) "の" after "検出器." I think the photo transmitter and receiver are used to check the gap of some product. It is fairly common to do that.

Translation: "Use a string to align the photo transmitter and receiver for the gap detection device."

This is a commonly used method (string) to align the photo sensors. If a string is not available, I used (when I was an engineer) a stick of wood or a laser pointer.
