Source text - Dutch Ik lig in het ziekenhuisbed wat aan de dood te denken als er opeens een oude man in z’n onderbroek, met naast zich zo’n mobiele stellage waaraan allerlei zakjes en meters hangen, naar me wuift.
Ik zwaai terug.
Hij zegt iets, het lijkt op een vraag en ik zeg voor de zoveelste keer: “Non parlo italiano!”
Dat interesseert hem niks. Hij blijft praten. Af en toe zakt zijn mondmaskertje wat af en hij zet hem pas weer goed als hij even uitgepraat is. Ik versta wel iets: auto, hart, vrouw, huis, voetbal… ik kan er geen wijs uit worden. Maar ik herhaal het woord voetbal, wijs op mezelf en zeg “Olanda.”
De man toont medelijden met mij. In gebarentaal. Hij kijkt naar boven of hij tevergeefs God aanroept, haalt zijn schouders op, schudt zijn hoofd en maakt een gebaar waaruit ik opmaak: het spijt me. Alles met één hand, met die andere zoekt hij steun bij die ingewikkelde stellage.
Ik zeg: “Italia,” en ik steek mijn duim op.
Hij nikt. Dan moet hij van een zuster doorlopen, want hij verspert de weg in de gang waar ik lig. Maar als hij langs me loopt, doet hij iets wat in verband met corona niet mag: hij raakt me aan en knijpt even in mijn arm om me sterkte te wensen.
“Grazie.”
Ik meen het.
Nergens heb je zoveel behoefte aan iets van menselijkheid als ziek en onzeker in een ziekenhuis.
Na zes uur in die gang liggen, moet ik plassen en stap mijn bedje uit.
Ik passeer een heel oude dame met weinig tanden in de mond. Ze ziet er bleek en breekbaar uit. Ze ligt in zichzelf te rebbelen. Als ze mij ziet, wil ze ook met me praten en weer zeg ik: “Non parlo italiano.” Maar ook haar interesseert dat niks. Ze vertelt een verhaal waar ik dit keer echt niets van versta.
Wijs geworden van mijn vorige ontmoeting pak ik de vrouw even bij haar hand. Ze grijpt hem onmiddellijk. En ze zwijgt. Met grote ogen kijkt ze me aan. Ik kijk naar haar handen. Ruw, grof, stevig, vuile nagels. Ze wil me niet loslaten. Ook dit is gebarentaal. Ik probeer m’n hand los te rukken, want ik moet ook plassen.
“Bagno,” zeg ik en verlos mijn hand. Ze zegt iets, ik weet niet wat, maar het is een zin die pijn doet.
Translation - English I'm lying in a hospital bed thinking about death, when suddenly an old man wearing nothing but his underpants waves at me. He's standing next to one of those portable IV poles with various bags and monitors hanging from it.
I wave back.
He says something that sounds like a question, and for the umpteenth time, I say, "Non parlo italiano!"
That doesn't bother him. He carries on talking. Every now and then, his face mask sags, and he only puts it back over his mouth when he's finished speaking.
I understand a few words: car, heart, wife, house, football... But I can't make any sense of it. So I repeat the word football, point to myself and say "Olanda."
The man shows that he sympathises with me. In sign language. He looks heavenwards as if vainly beseeching God, shrugs, shakes his head, and makes a gesture that seems to say: I'm sorry. He does this all with one hand, his other hand gripping the complicated rig next to him for support.
I say, "Italia," and give him a thumbs up.
He nods. Then a nurse tells him to walk on because he's blocking the corridor where I'm lying. But as he walks past me, he does something that Covid forbids: he touches me and gives my arm a squeeze to wish me luck.
"Grazie."
I mean it.
Nowhere is the need for humanity greater than when you're lying, sick and worried, in a hospital bed.
After six hours in the corridor, I need to pee, so I get up.
I pass a very old lady who has almost no teeth. She looks pale and fragile lying there mumbling to herself. When she sees me, she wants to talk to me too, and again, I say, "Non parlo italiano." But it doesn't bother her either. She's telling me a story, and this time, I don't understand a single word.
I've learned from my previous encounter, and I take the woman's hand. She grips it without hesitation. And she stops talking, looks at me with wide eyes. I stare at her hands. Rough, coarse, strong, nails rimmed with dirt. She doesn't want to let me go. This is sign language too. I try to pull my hand away because I really need to pee.
"Bagno," I say, wrenching my hand free. She says something, I don't know what, but it's a sentence that stings.

Source text - Dutch Follikelstimulatie
In een spontane menstruele cyclus komt meestal 1 eicel tot rijping na een kortdurende FSH-stijging. Tijdens een ivf-behandeling is het de bedoeling bij de vrouw meerdere follikels (en daarmee eicellen) tot rijping te laten brengen. Om een goede kans op succes te verkrijgen is het van belang meerdere eicellen te kunnen 'oogsten' voor externe bevruchting.
Uit deze via IVF met zaad bevruchte eicellen ontstane embryo's zullen de beste - dwz die met een goede kans op succes - worden geselecteerd voor terugplaatsing in de baarmoeder van de vrouw. Een goede kans op succes betekent een kans die vergelijkbaar is met de kans die gezonde paren in hun meest vruchtbare jaren hebben op zwangerschap.
Het stimuleren van de groei van meerdere follikels gebeurt door het toedienen van extra FSH (follikelstimulerend hormoon). Dit vindt plaats door injecties met follitropine, urofollitropine of menotrofine.
Om te zorgen dat de extra eicellen niet tot een vroegtijdige eisprong leiden geeft men een GNRH-agonist of GNRH-antagonist. Een voorbeeld hiervan is decapeptyl.
Het stimuleren van de follikelgroei begint gewoonlijk op dag 3 van de menstruele cyclus en duurt gewoonlijk tussen de 10 en 18 dagen. Gedurende deze tijd doet een arts regelmatig een echografie van de eierstokken en baarmoeder, om te zien of de follikels in het juiste tempo rijpen, en of het baarmoederslijmvlies voldoende dik is.
In de medische wereld wordt follikelstimulatie aangeduid met de term ovariële hyperstimulatie (afgekort OHS), wat vertaald kan worden in: 'verhoogde stimulatie van de eierstokken'. Om aan te geven dat alles onder begeleiding van een arts plaatsvindt, gebruikt men ook wel de term 'gecontroleerde ovariële hyperstimulatie' (afkorting: COH).

After in vitro fertilisation, the best ova – i.e. those with a good chance of leading to a successful pregnancy – are selected for transfer into the woman's uterus. 'A good chance' means a chance equivalent to the chances of a successful pregnancy for a healthy couple in their most fertile years.
Extra FSH is administered by injecting follitropin, urofollitropin or menotropin to stimulate the development of multiple follicles.
To ensure that the resulting extra egg cells do not lead to premature ovulation, the woman will be given a GnRH agonist or GnRH antagonist, for example, decapeptyl.
Stimulation of follicle growth usually begins on day 3 of the menstrual cycle and usually lasts between 10 and 18 days. During this time, a doctor will carry out regular ultrasound scans of the ovaries and uterus to see if the follicles are maturing at the correct rate, and if the uterus lining is thick enough.
In the medical world, follicle stimulation is referred to as ovarian hyperstimulation (OHS). The term 'controlled ovarian hyperstimulation' (COH) is sometimes also used to indicate that treatment is carried out under the supervision of a doctor.

Source text - Dutch 'Je maakt je eigen geluk,' concludeerde ik. Er leek een verschuiving plaats te vinden in mijn hoofd, alsof er een spelletje Tetris gaande was. Een perfect passend stukje kwam naar beneden, speelde vier rijen weg en maakte een zee van ruimte in mijn speelveld vrij. 'Maar als iedereen zomaar doet wat hij wil, zonder aan anderen te denken…'
'Maar dat is het nu juist: als je van iemand houdt, wil je toch het beste voor diegene? Kijk, mijn moeder stond ook niet te springen toen ik op kamers ging, maar ze wist dat ik die studie wilde doen, dus steunde ze me. Zo hoort het toch? Zou je moeder niet trots op je zijn, als je je dromen waarmaakt?'
'Vast,' antwoordde ik. 'Dat is niet iets waar we het vaak over hebben.
'Blijkbaar had dat wel gemoeten, want ik ken je nu, wat zal het zijn, een goed kwartier? En dit is het eerste wat ter sprake komt. Dat zegt iets.'
'Dat ik een flapuit ben.'
'Soms is het makkelijker om met een vreemde te praten. Kijk maar naar kappers en barmannen, wat die allemaal niet te horen krijgen tijdens hun werk.'
'Jij zou vast een goede kapper zijn.'
'Nou, misschien wel, ja!' Even leek hij het serieus in overweging te nemen. 'Maar alleen als ik van al mijn klanten de vrije hand zou krijgen. Dan lijkt het me wel wat.' Hij maakte een gebaar in de lucht, alsof hij het uithangbord al voor zich zag. 'Kapsalon De Vrije Hand.'
'Ik weet niet of je het heel druk zou krijgen. Denk je niet dat de meeste mensen zelf willen bepalen hoe belachelijk ze eruitzien?'
'Wie heeft het hier over belachelijk? Met mijn onovertroffen stijlgevoel kan het niet misgaan. Zeg nou zelf…'
'Oké, als je zo overtuigd bent van jezelf, wat zou je dan voor mij verzinnen?' Ik keek hem verwachtingsvol aan, hem uitdagend om met iets goeds te komen.
'Eens kijken,' zei hij.
En dat deed hij. Lang. Daarbij boog hij zich naar me toe om met een hand het stiekje los te trekken waarmee mijn haar in een knotje op mijn hoofd gefrummeld zat. Het was artistiek bedoeld, maar in zijn ogen maakte het waarschijnlijk eerder een slonzige indruk. Hij bleef even kijken naar hoe mijn steile, bruine haar langs mijn gezicht naar beneden viel. Ik dacht niet dat ik ooit eerder zo intensief bekeken was. Ik had inmiddels spijt dat ik het hem gevraagd had.
'Nee,' antwoordde hij na wat een eeuwigheid leek. 'Jou zou ik precies zo laten.'
Translation - English 'You make your own happiness,' I concluded. It seemed like my thoughts were shifting, as though a game of Tetris was going on in my head and a perfect puzzle piece had come down, cleared four rows and created oceans of space. 'But if everyone just did what they wanted, without thinking of anyone else...'
'But that's just it: if you love someone, you want what's best for them, don't you? Look, my mother wasn't happy when I went off to university, but she knew I wanted to do that course, so she supported me. That's how it's supposed to be, isn't it? Wouldn't your mum be proud of you if you achieved your dreams?'
'Probably,' I answered. 'But that's not something we really talk about.'
'Well, it looks like you should. Because I've known you, what, fifteen minutes? And we're talking about it already. That's got to mean something.'
'It means I don't know when to shut up.'
'Sometimes it's easier to talk to people you don't know. Just look at all the things people reveal to hairdressers and barmaids.'
'You'd make a brilliant hairdresser.'
'Well, maybe I actually would!' He looked almost as if he was seriously considering it. 'But only if my clients gave me complete freedom. I think I'd enjoy it.' He waved a hand in the air as though he could already see the sign over the shop. 'Salon de la Carte Blanche!'
'I'm not sure you'd have many customers. Don't you think most people would prefer to decide for themselves how ridiculous they look?'
'Who said anything about ridiculous? Let's be honest, with my impeccable sense of style, what could go wrong?'
'Okay, since you're so sure of yourself, what would you suggest for me?' I looked at him expectantly, daring him to come up with something good.
'Let me have a look at you,' he said.
And he did. For a long time. He leaned forward and reached out to remove the elastic band that was holding up my messy bun. I'd been going for a bohemian look, but in his eyes, it probably just looked scruffy. He kept looking at me, at how my straight, brown hair fell around my face and down past my shoulders. I didn't think I'd ever been looked at so intensely. I suddenly regretted asking him the question.
'No,' he answered after what felt like an eternity. 'I'd leave you exactly as you are.'

Why you need a native English speaker to translate your Dutch text
