My favorite are Eijiro by ALC and KOD by Kenkyusya. Regarding English monolingual dictionary, I would like to recommend OneLook

I do use Eijiro. i will take a look at your other suggestions.

最初の最初に買う辞書をお探しなのでしょうか？
個人的には、「良い辞書」とは、単語数より、自分の特化分野に適したもの、と思っています．．．
でも、最初に買う辞書として探していらっしゃるのでしたら、
南山堂ProMedicaのCD-ROMが結構よいと思います。これは動画や、実際の写真をふんだんに使って、単に語をおきかえるだけでなく、どういうものかという説明が詳しいので、これとステッドマンのＲＯＭ版の２つを揃えるのがよいかと思います。

化学専攻です。

化学は結構分野が広いので、医薬系ならDaikokuさんのおっしゃる辞書、またはライフサイエンス辞書がいいと思います。

化学技術系でしたら、ＥＢ科学技術用語大辞典、マグローヒル科学技術用語大辞典、ＩＰ化学・農学用語対訳辞典、理化学辞典などが電子データであります。用語数が多いのはマグローヒルと理化学辞典のようです。

以前、化学翻訳者の方から「プラスチック辞典？」（紙）に薬品名が多いと聞いたのですが、「プラスチック用語辞典」なのか「実用プラスチック辞典」なのか不明です。

お役に立てれば幸いです。
