I voted for having two e-mail addresses that I regularly use, but actually my second address--a hotmail address I've had for 7 years now--I don't check nearly as often as I should. Due to the length of time I've been using it and the apparent mediocrity of Hotmail's spam filters (still!!!), it is almost all spam and bacn these days.
Unfortunately, I only acquired my now-primary gmail account last year, so I still have a lot of personal and professional contacts from over the years ... And it's the address on my business cards! (I suppose I should just cough up the money and get another set printed). Actually I have one for professional purpose and one for private subjects or friends but there is always something going wrong with the one or the other so that I sometimes communicate my private e-mail address to clients so that they can send me their text to translate. One has to be careful!

1 primary e-mail address for work. Outlook is set to download new messages every five minutes, and it announces new messages by an acoustic signal and the opening of a small window. My clients appreciate that I respond to their e-mails immediately.
1 secondary e-mail address from a different provider for work. Outlook downloads those messages, too.
1 private e-mail address. But my best friends write to my primary work address so that I see their e-mails earlier.

I have Gmail for business, Verizon for person stuff and Yahoo for Yahoo Groups and some personal stuff. I would think, in this business, it would be rather dangerous to have only one e-mail. What if it goes down, the way Gmail does from time to time?

As for the people who sometimes contact you through Hotmail, whenever that happens, reply to them and mention that you will soon be cancelling your Hotmail account and you have a shiny new e-mail address for them to jot down. It will take some time, but it's worth it. Hotmail has become the worst free service of all. I am sure once you put Hotmail behind you, you will even breathe easier (no need to check 200 spams each day to find that one personal message; one less e-mail server to worry about).
I am curious to find out why someone would use 5 to 7 mail addresses... ▲ Collapse

I voted 1, because it is the one I use regularly. It has an excellent spam filter, and my folder and archiving are well-organized, so I really appreciate not having to bounce back and forth between different sites for different accounts.
In response to Amy's valid concern, I do of course have a web-based email account (yahoo) for emergency situations, and it has indeed come in handy, but I do not use it regularly.

First off, *all* my email is web based. This has two major advantages:
1) access to my emails is the same from anywhere - no matter if I use my home machine, my laptop, the old desktop in the country house, someone else's computer or public Internet access;
2) I don't run the risk of a virus infecting Outlook and flooding all addresses in my Address book with spam - simply because I don't use an Address book

I have Outlook installed but I'm using it only for reading the occasional .eml files.
That said, I have 7 addresses on 5 different email servers:
- 2 working: a main one plus an emergency one - on different servers, of course;
- 1 for personal communication;
- 1 for various (useful) online subscriptions, newsletters, receiving requested information etc.;
- 1 with a meaningless name and phoney personal data that I give to suspicious sites; needless to say, it is stuffed with spam;
- 2 older ones where the email servers have limited functionality but I have some long-standing contacts through them and wouldn't bother to change that.
I check the working ones several times a day, the personal one - normally once a day, and the others - less frequently. IMO, not much of a time waste compared to the convenience, orderliness and security benefits. ▲ Collapse
