Thus far LinkedIn has not brought me any jobs or clients. My jobs have come either from ProZ, direct clients and/or other sources.

I think not, although some of my clients and colleagues are linked to me on LinkedIn.

We tend to link up after the ifrst job, but it might mean that clients come back with new jobs because they remember me, having seen me among their connections on LinkedIn.

I don't expect anyone to ask me to do a job thru LinkedIn, and these days I feel more annoyance than expectations getting invitations from people whom I never met or know. My honest opinion: Why the h*ll do you want to be connected to me?

I received work offers only after I promoted my services in various groups. It seems that you really have to spell out how your services could be of use to that particular group.

LinkedIn has also been good for networking. I have invited other art/cultural heritage type translators to connect and explained why I wished to connect and vice-versa (I always ask why they want to connect before deciding). This has also resulted in work offers.

Those with 500+ connections (unless I know them well) I tend to avoid on principle - they seem to be set on collecting points or something.

I like the "word of mouth" effect of LinkedIn. I am delighted when a translation agency, which has never approached me for work, asks to be connected to me. As Christina says, my visibility on their list of connections may well be an advantage in the future. I would think that I am likely to refer others to people in my LinkedIn list if I receive requests that fall outside of the bounds of my language pairs. I would also refer such requests to those of you who have become familiar to me via Kudo... See more

Tools for a professional toolkit Jul 29, 2011

Iwas on LinkedIn very briefly. It was of no use to me whatsoever, but that was my fault. Like any tool, you have to learn how to use it. Often this sort of thing brings work indirectly. Effort and ingenuity are required to exploit them wth efficacy. However, as has already been mentioned, the profiles with zillions of contacts make me want to run away screaming !!!

I find interesting the way in which we can relate through LinkdIn. We end up sending messages to professionals we do not know, but who work in the same area and might be colleagues some day... I subscribed to several language and interpretation groups. Every day, I receive an e-mail from each group with the new discussion topics. About one out of ten threads is interesting to me... however, when I pick that one up, I participate, post messages and sometimes send or receive a message from sb who works in my same pair languages and lives in my city, or nearby...

Once, I was offered a simultaneous interpretation job into Portuguese, but the end customer finally decided to hire a native professional. So, I was not given the job; but I had been contacted through LinekdIn!

I think Linkedin is useful as a business card. When meeting other professionals or potential clients, in addition to checking their website I always check their Linkedin profile as well to get an idea of who they are. I am sure I get checked out that way as well. If I can't find someone on Linkedin, I am always a bit cautious, but maybe that is due to Linkedin being very big in the Netherlands.
Twitter, to my surprise, is good for getting new jobs as well.

I initially solicited connections a couple of years ago thinking LinkedIn might help me attract clients/collaborators, but have yet to see that it has materially benefited me in any way. I willingly accept any invitations from fellow translators or outsourcers (even if I don't know them), but it seems that everyone pretty much has the same idea of making as many connections as possible so that they can somehow get new clients/collaborators through that

It doesn't seem very promising.

In this respect, LinkedIn it strikes me as being about as professionally useful as Facebook.

I've joined a couple of translator groups on LinkedIn, but have not been able to find the time or muster the will to plunge into any of the discussions taking place there. The groups in any case strike me as more of "an interesting diversion" than as a potential source of new clients. I have enough "interesting diversions" in my life, thank you.

This is my impression so far. I would be interested in reading comments from those who can make a convincing case that LinkedIn has worked for them in some way that goes beyond the oh so nebulous participation in discussions of interest and the forming of connections with other translators with whom one might--someday--collaborate or from whom one might--someday--receive referrals.

I don't find it at all useful, as I already have the contact details of the people it pesters me about. Nor do I have spare time time to spend clicking my way thru yet another networking app of little perceptible use to me for business or leisure purposes. A waste of space IMO.

Slightly off topic, I sometimes find myself wondering if anybody out there actually ever has enough clients in their portfolio. I'm currently hoping not to receive any offers of work at all for the next week or three, so am more interested in "netshirking"

I have not met new clients with it. It's totally useless. Proz works way better.

Most of my clients found me through Proz.com, a few from Xing, not a single one from LinkedIn.

but people I have connected with from Facebook or Agentsolo.com have also added me on LinkedIn and I've made some contacts that way. But I haven't really gotten any jobs directly from LinkedIn. It has its uses for networking, etc.

Most of my colleagues on LinkedIn are close collaborators, many that go back for decades, and I really like being in touch. Once I posted a status about something I was doing research on, and the next day I received a scanned version of an article I had been looking for for years.

I like being able to have separate sites: colleagues on LinkedIn and personal friends/family on Facebook. I wouldn't want my colleagues to see some of the weird stuff posted by my Brazilian nieces and neph
