I’ll have to blame something else! My Internet connection is very stable, I haven’t had a single problem for a long time (over 5 years) and even then it never failed more than a few minutes. Otherwise, it takes just a phone call to my provider to have it back again. Fingers crossed!

When I was a freelancer... Jun 2, 2021

...in Ireland, my Internet connection was often very unreliable, which really affected my performance. As an in-house translator, it's not an issue.

My performance as a translator is never "less-than-desired". Maintaining the highest professional standard is essential for survival in this business. A reliable internet connection is part of that.

Internet connection Jun 2, 2021

Internet connections are now excellent in Spanish cities (no idea about rural areas), so I can't blame the Internet for my ineptitude or slowness, although I couldn't access this page five minutes ago but that had nothing do with my connection.

Regardless of the reliability or speed of your connection, it is something you should factor in when making promises to clients.

If you mean "throughput" by "performance", it can be impacted indeed by the connection speed, if you work with online tools. Last year, we got an optical connection in our street, and since then my connection is really fast. Before that, it was only just adequate and could impair my working speed.

However, there is also always the server side. Even with my fast connection, some online tools/CATs/servers can be really slow (often depending on the time of day).

I make it my business to ensure a stable internet connection. I have a fibre optic connection at the office and cable at home, both very reliable and fast.

Just in case I run into connection issues when travelling, I always have my phone's hotspot.

Once In A Great While Jun 2, 2021

My internet service, which I had for many years, faded in and out, all day long, over a period of 5 days, more than a year ago when I had it with the local telephone company. My internet service, which I had for many years, faded in and out, all day long, over a period of 5 days, more than a year ago when I had it with the local telephone company. At the end of the 5 days, a tech called to verify that my service was A-Okay again, at which time he told me that too much water had seeped into the lines in my area. Luckily, the gross inconvenience didn't affect my correspondence with prospective clients. A year ago I switched my Internet and home wi-fi services to a well-known provider. They offered me a special plan because of my status as a senior citizen, which costs me, monthly, about 60 dollars less than the phone company's did. Getting much better service now, here at home. But I haven't liked it at all when some of the chain fast food restaurants have dumped me off their wi-fi after a certain amount of time, esp. when they gave me no warning that they would do that, and when I have been in the middle of posting on some of these forums. Many years ago, a project manager in China kept writing to tell me she hadn't received my work. But the problem turned out to be on her end, after all. It's all very annoying and aggravating when the Internet and wi-fi I am using don't work well. But thank goodness, I've never lost any money over it.

Puts me into trouble often times Jun 3, 2021

Our internet connection is here in the Philippines is often used as a meme because of how poor it is. And, I am also living in the southern part of the country that's why having this poor connection was never a question for us. I mean, we are located far from the capital so it's expected.

Issues other than the connection Jun 3, 2021

My internet connection rarely ever interferes in my performance.
The worst issue I've been going through in the past years is when MemoQ starts using 90% of my RAM and becomes a sick snail. That happens about three times a day. The people at Kilgray have no idea how to deal with this, and don't acknowledge the issue. All I can do is to shutdown MemoQ and start it again.

Crossed fingers, I haven't had a serious problem with my Internet connection for many years. Sometimes it goes out briefly, but it comes right back up again. Sometimes I lost work in the 1970s and 1980s.

Mesh Jun 3, 2021

If having trouble with 5G WiFi range, a Mesh system just works.

You can get two modules for about 60 bucks, really stable, devices connect immediately, and it automatically manages 4G/5G switching, much better than an extender. Each module uses about 10W.
