Some, yes Oct 21, 2022

But I couldn't care less, I deliver in their system, but translate in mine.

Most do, but... Oct 21, 2022

...I have reduced the CAT tools that I myself am willing to work with to three locally installed and one cloud-based one. All the other tools I have ever tried were just too clunky and underdeveloped to do anything for my productivity, so I simply will not accept any jobs to be translated in those tools.

Mostly, I do not. For most of them I work on their own CAT tools.

My CAT or no CAT Oct 21, 2022

I can still work without a CAT tool, but strongly prefer to use one. Most of my clients work with the same CAT, and the rest are only interested in a clean target translation, so they are not worried about how I produce it.

I have not learnt to shift from one CAT to another or use more than one, and I have enough work that way. Ten years ago I would have considered seriously whether I would learn to use a different CAT, but like Alex Lichanov, when I have tried I have found them too

I have not learnt to shift from one CAT to another or use more than one, and I have enough work that way. Ten years ago I would have considered seriously whether I would learn to use a different CAT, but like Alex Lichanov, when I have tried I have found them too clunky to be much use.

I recently found a printout of a mail I sent to a client many years ago - although I ended up working for them for several years. I explained that their CAT's proofreading function without WYSIWYG was a pain, and that I could barely correct my own typos in it, let alone anyone else's, or check formatting in a sea of tags. I had forgotten that I was quite such a stroppy bitch back then!! But they got the message.

Now I am too old to change my ways, and when there are no more clients who will accept the way I work, I will give up. I hope I can do it gracefully. Life is too short to struggle with CAT tools when you can find one that is comfortable to work with.

Extraordinary Oct 22, 2022

I find it extraordinary that so many translators (44.6% of 457 votes as I write this) answered "Yes, most of them".

I wonder if there are any other professions whose practitioners would be willing to take on jobs where they were required to use their customer's toolbox and not their own.

For the record, my own response to any client who specified such a requirement would be, "Goodbye."

Trados Oct 22, 2022

Nowadays it’s only Trados they require.

Great software!

It creates sdlxliff files that I can translate faster and better with CafeTran.

No one requires memoQ anymore. Very happy with that.

Pretty much the entire gaming sector has their content translated in memoQ. Don't ask me why, though. Then again, I am perfectly happy with memoQ anyway.

(EDIT: By "gaming", I mean actual games by actual developers, not machine-translated or, even worse, Gengo-translated mobile shovelware that mostly consists of intrusive ads and pay-to-win features.)

Among my self-employed friends, a lorry driver, a van driver and a digger driver🤷‍♂️

It makes sense for them to have everyone generate compatible files.
