When I started working in-house (at an EU institution) I was mentored by a senior colleague during my first nine months there and several years later I mentored some of my junior colleagues. Mentoring had much more to do with getting acquainted with the ins and outs of working at the UE rather than with the profession itself.

I've never mented anyone or been a mentee, but I can be pretty mental.

I learned a lot from another translator when I started in-house, but in those days it was called on-the-job training. I think I was ready to be let loose on the world within a month.

From a few weeks to a long time Jan 20, 2023

I am a ProZ Pro mentor, and have been enjoying the experience thoroughly. My mentees, or apprentices come to me with questions, and we work on them together as well as a few assignments I give them to hone their skills. Even if their need or interest falls off over time, they still contact me about translation opportunities and other career choices.

I sure wish I had had a mentor now some twenty-some years ago.
