Pradinis tekstas - olandų Wanneer we dan richting ons onderzoeksobject gaan, komen we in het omvangrijke oeuvre van dr. Willem Aalders regelmatig de naam van filosofen, met name Plato, tegen. Ook in secundaire literatuur wordt menigmaal de link gelegd tussen Plato en het Christendom, Plato en Augustinus etc. Het is buiten kijf dat Plato’ s invloed groot is (geweest) en zich sinds de periode van het hellenisme uitstrekt tot ver buiten de Grieks-filosofische traditie. Het hellenistisch jodendom b.v. is sterk door hem gegrepen. Philo van Alexandrië, 25 v. Chr.- 50 na Chr., meent zelfs dat Plato contact heeft gehad met wijze joden, die hem de transcendentie van God leerden. Ook de christelijke kerk heeft Plato hoog gewaardeerd en Augustinus meent dat Plato de heidense denker is die, meer dan wie dan ook, het christendom nabij komt. Eeuwen later constateert dr. C.J. de Vogel een heilzame en verrijkende invloed van Plato op het christendom en de reeds genoemde dr. W. Aalders tekent hem als een soort adventsbode, te vergelijken met Simeon uit het Lukasevangelie. (Van den Brink, 2000, pp. 55,56).
Is het te boud gesproken, om Plato op grond hiervan een soort Simeonsfiguur te noemen; een man van Athene, en deze man was rechtvaardig en vroom, en hij verwachtte de vertroosting der volken (Lucas 2:25? Is het te boud, om zijn Politeia te beschouwen als een adventistische proloog op Augustinus’ ‘De Staat van God?’ (Aalders, 1984, p. 158)
De eerlijkheid gebiedt te zeggen dat Aalders elders erkent dat Socrates en Plato zich in de ‘voorhof’ bevonden, de afgronden van het hart en de zonde niet hebben gepeild en toch niet meer waren dan een ´propadeuse van het christelijk geloof´. Dat ziet Aalders als een chronisch tekort van de platonici. (Aalders, 1984, p. 177).
Volgens Aalders heeft Plato er meer dan wie ook op gewezen, dat de leugen het erop toelegt de mens het uitzicht naar boven, op God en de goddelijke, eeuwige zijnsorde te ontnemen. Daarom alleen al dienen we hem in ere te houden. Hij aarzelt niet Plato in te lijven bij de wolk der getuigen uit Hebr. 11, aan wie door het geloof getuigenis is gegeven, maar die de vervulling van de belofte niet hebben gekregen. Zijns inziens heeft Plato gewaagd van een goddelijk ingrijpen, van een uur der verlossing. (Aalders, 1984, pp 160, 161). Van den Brink meent ook dat Plato’ s grote invloed te danken is aan vooral diens opvatting dat onze alledaagse werkelijkheid niet de enige, en zelfs niet de eigenlijke is. De eigenlijke wereld is van geestelijke aard, en daarop moet de mens zich richten. Christenen zeiden hem dat graag na. Plato’ s oproep niet op te gaan in de wereld van elke dag vond hun instemming. Daarnaast diens geloof in absolute normen en waarden, in een goddelijke voorzienigheid, in een leven na dit leven en daarmee verbonden de onsterfelijkheid van de menselijke ziel levert tal van overeenkomsten op. (Van den Brink, 2000, p. 56).
Gans anders is de visie van dr. A.P. Bos, die betoogt dat het christendom zich veel te kritiekloos aansloot bij het platonisme, waardoor er een onbijbelse wetenschapsopvatting ontstond. Zijns inziens dient zich in de Griekse filosofie een zin-perspectief aan, dat zich opwerpt als het redelijk alternatief voor elke geloofstraditie. (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 175). Bos legt de zere vinger bij de allegoriserende uitleg van o.a. Philo van Alexandrië, en Augustinus, waardoor er een bedekking op de Bijbel wordt gelegd en Gods Woord wordt getransformeerd ‘van een bron van geloven tot een filosofische heilsleer, waarvan de betekenis slechts door filosofisch opgeleide personen zou kunnen worden gevat met behulp van hun redelijke verstand. (Bos, 1996, pp 10, 11). Hij acht de allegoriserende uitleg van een heidense, Griekse herkomst. Waar Aalders zich sterk maakt voor een (her)waardering van Plato’s inzichten betreffende de onderscheiding stoffelijke wereld en daaraan tegengestelde en overgewaardeerde geestelijke werkelijkheid acht Bos die onderscheiding strijdig met de bijbelse scheppingsleer. In een artikel in het blad Beweging (Beweging, 1985, p. 17) pleit Bos vurig ook te luisteren naar hen die in de filosofie een eigen koers hebben willen varen door te zoeken naar een integraal christelijke filosofie om op basis daarvan te komen tot een beoordeling van het door dr. Aalders verdedigde Platonisme. Dan alleen kunnen we zijns inziens komen tot een zorgvuldig oordeel over de vraag of Plato ‘in wezen meer dichterlijk en priesterlijk was ingesteld dan filosofisch’ en of zijn houding vooral gekenmerkt is door ‘een geestelijke openheid en ontvankelijkheid, een Maria-houding’ en of zijn dialogen te zien zijn als ‘een voor-christelijke, een advent-kleurige aankondiging van de meditatie, van het inwendige, biddende overwegen van waarheden met het oog op de praktische toepassing ervan in het concrete leven.’ (Beweging, 1985, p. 18; Aalders, 1984, pp. 45, 47).
Volgens dr. K. Van der Zwaag staat het denken van Bos diametraal tegenover dat van de hervormde theoloog en cultuurcriticus Aalders, die sterk verwijst naar het christelijk karakter van het Grieks-Platoonse denken, met name in de leer van het Zijn. (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 175). Bos’ inzet in zijn ‘Geboeid door Plato’ verraadt ook zijn wantrouwende toon als hij zegt: ‘Vaak is het voorgesteld als een bewijs van Gods voorzienig handelen in de geschiedenis, dat de Griekse cultuur met haar indrukwekkende prestaties op het terrein van wetenschap en filosofie tot bloei gekomen was vóór de periode van het ontstaan van de christelijke kerk, zodat de resultaten van de geestelijke activiteit van de Grieken ook produktief gemaakt konden worden bij de ontwikkeling van een christelijke levens- en wereldbeschouwing en voor daarbij passend onderwijs (W. Aalders; F. de Graaff’). (Bos, 1996, p. 8). Aalders’ repliek op genoemd artikel van dr. Bos spreekt boekdelen. Slechts één citaat: ‘Daar sta ik tot mijn verrassing opeens tegenover prof. Bos, die met nadruk verklaart, dat het door mij (in navolging van Augustinus!) voorgestane dualisme zeker niet authentiek christelijk is, maar een ‘wijsgerige stroming buiten de christelijke traditie.’ (Beweging, 1985, p. 19).
Genoemde lijnen lijken samen te komen bij Augustinus, die het platoons gedachtengoed als het ware kerstent, waarbij hij de centrale notie uit Plato’ s denken, de ideeën, interpreteert als gedachten van God. (Van den Brink, 2000, p. 56). Dat meent ook D. Visser, die signaleert dat Aalders de ‘lof van Plato zingt’, maar meent dat ‘zijn lofzang op Augustinus nog hoger is gestemd.’ (Visser, …., p. 21). Aalders zegt dan ook dat ‘het christelijk geloof zijn rijkste en volste ontwikkeling heeft gehad in de overgang van joodse sekte tot wereldkerk in de theologie van Augustinus. (Aalders, 1992, p. 155). Na Augustinus is de Griekse wijsheid op gelijke wijze tot een overwonnen en achterhaalde levens- en wereldbeschouwing geworden als het joodse denken na Paulus. ‘Plato die als leraar van de antieke wijsheid bijkans een millennium de geesten beheerst had, werd verdrongen door de kerkvader Augustinus. (Aalders, 1992, p. 156). Hij werd met zijn wereld- en levensbeschouwing de geestelijke vader van het Westen. (Aalders, 1992, p. 195).
De betekenis van Augustinus is volgens Aalders dat hij de machten van deze wereld geestelijk heeft getypeerd, waarbij hij negatief oordeelt over het tijdsproces, de geschiedenis. De taak van de kerk ligt meer in haar blijvende aardse vreemdelingschap en daarin is zij de tegenpool van de wereldse rijken.(Aalders, 1977, p. 62, 63). Volgens Van der Zwaag stelt Aalders zich tot het eind van zijn leven positief op tegenover het Griekse denken, gezien de lijn die Aalders trekt in de trilogie over de Septuagint. (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 179) De al genoemde dr. A.P. Bos heeft hiertegen grote bezwaren en ziet in de lijn van de reformatorische wijsgeren Vollenhoven en Dooyeweerd het Griekse denken in conflict met het bijbelse spreken over het geschapen-zijn van heel de werkelijkheid. Het Griekse denken over het kwaad in de werkelijkheid en de bevrijding daarvan is in strijd met de bijbelse noties van zondeval en verlossing door het verzoenend lijden van Jezus Christus. (Mekkes, 1970, pp. 12-14)
We stuiten hier derhalve op discussiestof die nog steeds niet haar einde heeft bereikt. Niet voor niets besteedt dr. G. van den Brink apart aandacht aan de verschillen tussen het Griekse en het joods-christelijke denken. Daarbij ziet hij een aantal diepgaande verschillen, maar ook bepaalde opmerkelijke overeenkomsten. Hij let dan op het godsbegrip, de geschiedenisopvatting, het mensbeeld en de maatschappijvisie. Voor ons onderzoek is van belang hetgeen hij zegt over de geschiedenisopvatting. Zijns inziens gebeurt er iets fundamenteel nieuws als we stellen dat God door middel van de incarnatie in de ‘volheid der tijden’ mens geworden is. Mattheus spreekt over de ‘genesis’ van Jezus Christus, een eenmalige gebeurtenis die in het evangelie allesbepalend wordt geacht voor het herstel van de verhoudingen tussen God, mens en wereld. Lukas legt dan vooral het accent op het historisch verband tussen de heilsfeiten en laat zien hoe de heilsgeschiedenis zich eerst in Israël naar de incarnatie toe beweegt, dan een breekpunt in de geschiedenis vindt in kruis en opstanding, om vervolgens vanaf pinksteren breed uit te waaieren over de wereld. Alle heilsfeiten op die lijn gelden als even zovele nieuwe en unieke daden van God. Deze voorstelling is binnen de Griekse filosofie ondenkbaar. In de tijd kan helemaal niets nieuws gebeuren wat werkelijk nieuw is, want alles wat gebeurt, is opgenomen in de eeuwige goddelijke beweging van het ene naar het vele en weer terug. De geschiedenis lijkt op een cirkel, waarin dezelfde dingen steeds weer terugkomen in het eeuwige proces van emanatie. De Griekse opvatting is deterministisch: alles wat gebeurt, gebeurt noodzakelijk en is van eeuwigheid af al bepaald door de natuur der dingen. Alle dingen streven immers van nature naar het doel dat als het ware in hen ingebakken zit. Een en ander geldt ook voor de gang van het mensenleven. De christelijke opvatting is lineair, de Griekse cyclisch; de eerste vinden we sterk bij Augustinus.(Van den Brink, 2000, p. 84)
Omdat dr. Aalders keer op keer met verve teruggrijpt op Augustinus – vaak via Groen van Prinsterer - willen we in deze thesis nagaan hoe Aalders zijn geschiedenisvisie heeft ontwikkeld, met name in zijn Schepping of Geschiedenis, hoe hij deze visie ontleent aan de brief aan de Hebreeën, waarna we deze willen contrasteren met die van Herman Dooyeweerd als representant van de reformatorische wijsbegeerte. Zowel Aalders als Dooyeweerd zijn christenen die het Woord van God volop willen laten meeklinken in hun levens- en wereldbeschouwingen en toch komen zij tot verschillende concepten alsook tot een verschillende waardering van het Griekse gedachtegoed. Het lijkt me intrigerend de visies van genoemde christenwijsgeren te vergelijken. Het accent ligt daarbij op Aalders. Dat zal de hoofdlijn van de thesis zijn. Dooyeweerds visie wordt dan gebruikt om die van Aalders mee te confronteren. Zo komen we tot de volgende probleemstelling:
Een analyse van de geschiedenisvisie van dr. W. Aalders, zoals met name uitgewerkt in zijn beschouwing over de brief aan de Hebreeën, gecontrasteerd met de geschiedenisvisie van dr. H. Dooyeweerd
Nadat we in de inleiding diverse posities globaal hebben verkend, concentreren we ons in hoofdstuk 1 op de geschiedenisvisie van Aalders. In hoofdstuk 2 analyseren we hoe Aalders de brief van Paulus aan de Hebreeën als basisstof hanteert voor zijn visie; in hoofdstuk 3 confronteren we zijn visie met die van Dooyeweerd als representant van de reformatorische wijsbegeerte. In de conclusie komen we tot een samenvattende weergave van wat we gevonden hebben en tot aanzetten voor verder onderzoek.

1.1 Een korte biografie
Willem Aalders, zoon van ds. J.C. Aalders (Stam, 2010, p. 23) , gereformeerd predikant, wordt geboren op 5 mei 1909 in ’s Gravenmoer, brengt een deel van zijn jonge jaren door in het Friese Beetgum (Friesland werd door hem genoemd een ‘kostelijk land met kostelijke mensen’), en trekt met zijn ouders in 1918 naar Indië, waar zijn vader beroepen was in Batavia. Daar breekt een rijke, mooie tijd aan met overweldigende indrukken. Tijdens zijn eerste verlofperiode besluit vader Aalders om onverklaarbare reden in Nederland te blijven. Daar raakt betrokken bij de kwestie Geelkerken, 1926, sluit zich aan bij de Gereformeerde Kerken in Hersteld Verband en dient de gemeente van Amsterdam-Centrum.
Via tante IJda leert de jonge Aalders Kohlbrugge en het persoonlijk geloof kennen. Hij volgt in Amsterdam het gereformeerd gymnasium aan de Keizersgracht, waarna hij theologie gaat studeren in Utrecht. ‘Dat leek mij de weg om in te groeien in de Hervormde Kerk.’ Daar ondergaat hij sterke invloed van professor Maarten van Rijn (Stam, 2010, p. 24) , zijn latere promotor, die hem wijst op Pascal en Luther. Na zijn studie wordt hij anderhalf jaar predikant in Wijk aan Zee, promoveert in 1941 op ‘Pascal, als apologetisch prediker’. Daarna wordt hij predikant in resp. het Friese Oosterzee en Koudum. Koudum is een confessionele gemeente, waar hij zich zeer hecht. ‘Maar ik weet wel dat het afscheid van Koudum mij zoveel deed, dat ik bij mijn afscheidspreek heb zitten grienen op de preekstoel.’ Hij vertrekt naar Groningen, 1941, waar ze regelmatig joden verbergen. Meerdere verzoeken, die in deze periode hem bereiken – docentschap Kerk en Wereld in Driebergen, hoogleraarschap zendingswetenschap Oegstgeest, hoogleraarschap aan de VU in Amsterdam – worden door hem afgeslagen, totdat Aalders een beroep naar Den Haag aanvaardt en de Maranathagemeente dient. Daar vereenzaamt hij, volgens eigen zeggen, door de Barthiaanse theologie en de versociologisering van het theologische denken in de kerken. Van 1967 tot 1975 wordt hij lector in de protestantse theologie aan de Katholieke Universiteit in Nijmegen, nadat hem te kennen is gegeven elders aan universiteiten kansloos te zijn vanwege zijn anti-Barthiaanse stellingname. Daar doceert hij over Luther en Kierkegaard met de spits tegen de collectivisering, versociologisering en vermaatschappelijking van het evangelie. Hij is in die en de navolgende periode betrokken bij De Open Brief (1967), Het Getuigenis (1971) en het Hervormd Pleidooi (1994). In 1999 sterft zijn vrouw Sara Geertruida Huender. Het verdwijnen van de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in 2004 was voor hem een gegeven dat hij principiëel niet kon aanvaarden. ‘De Protestantse Kerk in Nederland, losgesneden van de historie als zij is, is voor hem geen kerk’, aldus ds. L.J. Geluk. De laatste twee gebeurtenissen hebben hem zeer eenzaam gemaakt. Willem Aalders is in 2005 overleden en op 30 december 2005 begraven op de begraafplaats Oud Eik en Duinen te Den Haag.
1.2. Fundering van zijn concept
Bij mijn weten heeft Aalders nergens systematisch aandacht besteed aan zijn geschiedenisconcept, maar vinden we in vrijwel al zijn werken duidelijke gedachten betreffende zijn visie op de geschiedenis. In een van zijn hand geschreven essay spreekt Aalders over illustraties van ‘historische ogenblikken in zijn leven.’ Daaronder verstaat hij dan zulke ogenblikken waarin een mens even beseft wat eigenlijk geschiedenis, levende geschiedenis is. Hij gewaagt van zulke momenten in zijn eigen leven. ‘Zelf heb ik een soortgelijke belevenis gehad. Dat was in de pastorie van het dorp Koudum in de zuidwesthoek van Friesland in de meidagen van 1940. Eerst het wakker worden op de ochtend van de 10de mei en het gewaar worden op straat dat er iets bijzonders was. Toen reeds de volgende dag het doortrekken van Duitse tanks, gevechtswagens, cavalerie. De beklemmende Pinksterdagen. Het vertrek van de koningin. Het bombardement van Rotterdam. De capitulatie. Dat was een historische belevenis. Het einde van een tijdperk.’ (Transparant, 1992, p. 3).
In de natuur kan ons een panische schrik bevangen. Psalm 91:6 – ‘voor de pestilentie, die in de donkerheid wandelt; voor het verderf, dat op de middag verwoest’ - lijkt er ook zo over te spreken. De Grieken kennen dit ook. Die ervaring lijkt ons vreemd te zijn geworden, maar wat ons wel als panische schrik kan overvallen, is volgens Aalders de geschiedenis. Hij stelt zelfs dat men niet echt kan schrijven over de geschiedenis en echt historicus zijn als men de ervaring niet kent van de angst voor de geschiedenis, de schrik van Clio.’(Transparant, 1992, p. 3). Om die door hem beleefde angst voor de geschiedenis te overwinnen grijpt hij naar Luthers ‘De servo arbitrio’, waarin Luther o.a. gewaagt van een mens die onderworpen is aan bovenmenselijke machten. Aalders noemt Luther de gids in een tijd als de onze waarin wij ‘hoe langer en meer geconfronteerd zullen worden met de overmacht van de geschiedenismachten.’ Hij refereert aan Groen van Prinsterer, die eveneens ‘de schrik der geschiedenis’ kent. Hem volgt Aalders in zijn essay als hij zegt: ‘Wat mij in de zinnen uit de Voorrede het meest heeft getroffen, zijn de woorden: “De historie, die ook het vlammend schrift van den heiligen God is”. De profeten van Israël, de nebiim, weten daar van, getuige o.a. Jesaja 10:28-34; de Grieken, zoals Herodotos in zijn Historiën, hebben dat volgens Aalders beseft en wijzen op de bovenmenselijke factor in de geschiedenis en hij duidt de historici van Hellas ‘in hun episch-dramatische uitbeelding van het verleden’ aan als parallel-figuren van de Israëlische nebiim, omdat bij hen geschiedenis niet meer drama is in de zin van een louter menselijke handeling, maar iets waarbij hogere machten betrokken zijn. (Transparant, 1992, p. 4).
De gedachte – ‘historie als het vlammende schrift van de heilige God’ - mist Aalders bij vele historici. Door ‘historie als sprake Gods’ te zien, stelt Groen zich ‘buiten het gilde van de geleerde geschiedvorsers’. In deze lijn beweegt zich Aalders als hij refereert aan het Schriftgetuigenis van Daniël 5, waar de woorden ‘mené, mené, tekel, upharsin’ op de wand verschijnen, verstaan door degenen voor wie ze bestemd zijn: Daniël verstaat de sprake Gods in de geschiedenis en voorzegt Babels ondergang. Aalders lijkt dit door te trekken als hij zegt:
Maar dat moet toch een absurde voorzegging geweest zijn: dat die summum van barbaarse macht en hoogmoed zou kunnen ineenstorten en vallen! Toch is het een korte tijd later gebeurd. Niet van buitenaf, doch van binnenuit. Net als de ineenstorting van het machtige Sowjet-rijk en als de val van de Berlijnse muur. Hoe kan het? Hoe durfde Daniël het voorzeggen? De Bijbel zelf geeft het antwoord op die vragen. Het staat in Genesis 11, de geschiedenis van de spraakverwarring in Babylon. Nu in onze tijd hebben wij geleerd, wat die spraakverwarring was; het was een breuk in een gesloten wereldbeeld, de ontmaskering van de leugen van een afgoderij, van een mythe, van een ideologie. Datgene waardoor de mensen in het gesloten dwangsysteem van een uniform geloof met elkaar verbonden waren als in een termietenstaat, verliest opeens zijn vastheid en geloofwaardigheid. Er is geen eenheid, geen verband, geen richting, geen gezag meer. Een engel heeft als hemelse graffiteur heengeschreven door het spijkerschrift der mensen: Mené, mené, tekel, upharsin. De leugenmachten zijn weersproken. De profeet uit Israël sprak het uit en niemand was er die het tegensprak. (Transparant, 1992, p. 6).
Kenmerkend voor de profeet is, dat hij spreekt op de wijze waarop hij ook met God spreekt en verkeert: van aangezicht tot aangezicht, zoals een vriend met een vriend spreekt. De profeet benadert daarom ook het mysterie der geschiedenis als iemand, die met de Here God op vertrouwde voet verkeert en die in Gods heilsgeheimen toegelaten wordt. Zo zegt de profeet Amos: "Voorzeker, de Here God doet geen ding, of Hij openbaart Zijn raad aan Zijn knechten, de profeten" (3:7). Zo zijn zij de tolken geweest van de geschiedenis als "de vlammende sprake van de heilige God". Zij kennen de taal der geschiedenis. Zij ontcijferen de geheimzinnige tekens van de engel als hemelse graffiteur. Zij zijn voor Israël altijd weer de troosters en bemoedigers in uitzichtloze en wanhopige situaties.” (Jes.40,27,28) De harde en bittere taal van de geschiedenis gaat soms gepaard met lijden (1 Kon.22, Jer.15:15). In het oog springend is de profeet Daniël; krachtens opleiding en gebedsleven is zijn reikwijdte breder en is hij nauw betrokken bij de wereldproblemen: de geschiedenis is voor hem het wel en wee van Israël temidden van de heidenvolken. Visionair wordt voor zijn oog de wereldgeschiedenis tot een zich steeds scherper toespitsende strijd tussen de God van Israël en de heidense afgoden en worden tijd en eeuwigheid erbij betrokken. Geschiedenis wordt een eschatologisch, in de eeuwigheid uitmondend gebeuren met een eindtijdkarakter. (Transparant, 1992, p. 8).
In deze lijn zien we de Zoon des Mensen (Daniël 7) verschijnen, schismatiserend in het Jodendom. De universaliteit van de geschiedenis neemt alles in zich op en leidt naar de dag van de wederkomst. In het Evangelie wordt dit bevestigd in zendingsopdracht en doopbevel. In de lijn van Groen meent Aalders dat de christen-historicus in de wirwar van gebeurtenissen en daden een goddelijk stramien moet ontdekken: het vlammend schrift. De geschiedenis is een goddelijk weefwerk, mondt uit in de eeuwigheid en heeft dus een eindtijd-karakter. (Transparant, 1992, p. 10). Aalders’ slotsom in zijn laatste werk is dan ook:
Zo blijkt uit Groens geschriften dat de christen, wiens oog gescherpt is door de Schrift en die zich in geschiedenisvisie van de profeten en van het Evangelie heeft verdiept, in staat is om ook de vlammende sprake Gods en de lichtstralen van Gods volmaaktheid in het heden waar te nemen. En ik ben er van overtuigd dat dat de opdracht is voor de ecclesia nu, gezien het sluipende secularisatieproces dat haar bedreigt. Het zou haar een profetisch aureool geven. Een reveil in een apocalyptische tijd betekenen. Maar het zal zich slechts verwerkelijken dank zij een: CONFITEOR – IK BELIJD. Of om het uit te drukken in de taal van het negentiende-eeuwse reveil: Dare to be a Daniel, dare to be alone…. (D. Sankey).(Aalders, (Aalders, 2004, p. 39).
1.3 Definitie van geschiedenis
Een Evangeliebelijder houdt rekening met zijn tijd en met de aspiraties der eeuw, neemt de historie ernstig, omdat het kruis het middelpunt der wereldgeschiedenis is en het christendom naar zijn wezen historisch is. Tijd, historie en evangelie hangen samen. Evangelie belijden kan pas als men zijn tijd verstaat en die verstaat men als men in de historie is geworteld en dat is men pas als men het Evangelie gelooft. Het Evangelie is de ziel van de geschiedenis. Geschiedenis en Openbaring zijn op het nauwst met elkaar verbonden. (Aalders, 1977, p. 45)
Aalders maakt, in navolging van Groen van Prinsterer, onderscheid tussen Historie en geschiedenis : niet al wat geschiedt, is Historie ; het christendom is historisch in zoverre het met de Openbaring meegetuigt. Het gaat in Historie om grote tijden, heilige tijden, openbaringstijden; tijden die eeuwigheidswaarde hebben. Historie is voor Aalders Gods afdaling in de tijd; het heft de tijd boven zichzelf uit en schenkt het vluchtige moment eeuwige betekenis. Historie heeft altijd te maken met woorden en daden Gods, die eens voor altijd zijn geschied; gebeurtenissen die waarheidskarakter hebben en daarom nooit verleden tijd kunnen worden, maar een voortdurend Heden blijven. Als de Eeuwige, Die de naam draagt van het absolute ‘Ik ben’, in de tijd treedt, krijgt dat ogenblik het karakter van een eeuwig Heden, dat nooit verleden tijd wordt. Het geloof leeft van de indaling Gods in de tijd, van het eeuwig Heden der genade. Er is geen toekomstverwachting in de voortgaande tijd en de levende geschiedenis, maar alleen in de Historie. (Visser, 1994, p. 23).
In de geschiedenis is veel antichristelijks, dat tegen de Openbaring in getuigt. (Aalders, 1977, p. 49). Zonder die verworteling in de Openbaring wordt de tijd, de geschiedenis tot een leeg en zinloos krachtenspel. Geschiedenis is dat men de tijd ervaart en vereert als een veld van onafzienbare en onuitputtelijke mogelijkheden en kansen. Daarom noemt Aalders geschiedenis een leeg woord, al spreekt men van ontwikkeling, ontsluiting, vernieuwing, vooruitgang en bevrijding. Omdat geschiedenis niet weet van de openbaring van de levende is zij ontbinding van elke waarheid en waarde. (Visser, 19.., p. 23). Openbaring geeft de geschiedenis eenheid, samenhang, vastheid. Het modernisme mist dit en offert de historie op ter wille van de toekomst en manifesteert zich via secularisatie, ‘geschichtlich denken’ - denken dat geheel staat in het teken van de voortgaande geschiedenis, van de actualiteit - , futurologie, pragmatisme en hermeneutiek. (Aalders, 1977, p. 54).
Aalders meent, dat ‘als de geschiedenis ons van iets overtuigt dan wel hiervan, dat niet discontinuïteit, maar continuïteit haar meest opmerkelijke eigenschap is.’ (Aalders, 1984, p. 13). De theologie heeft het Evangelie te zeer verbonden met de aardse concrete historische werkelijkheid, hetwelk is een ‘verwereldlijking van het geloof’, te wijten aan het moderne, wetenschappelijke humanistische denken, dat leeft uit de grote ontdekking van de geschiedenis, van het historische karakter van de werkelijkheid, van geschiedenis als proces, als vooruitgang, als ontwikkeling. Zo kwam het historisch-evolutionisme de theologie binnen. (Aalders, 1969, p. 5). Hierin worden heil en geschiedenis, kerk en wereld zo nauw verbonden, dat er een breuk optreedt met het Evangelie, ‘het vlammend schrift.’
Om meer zicht te krijgen op de geschiedenis als de strijd van tegengestelde beginselen, de tijd en de werktuigen van de tijd gaat Aalders te rade bij de kerkvader Augustinus, die o.a. in zijn ‘De Civitate Dei’ uitvoerig ingaat op de machinamenta temporalia, de geestelijke realiteiten met hun opstuwende meedogenloze krachten die in het geschiedproces tot uiting komen. Geschiedenis wordt voor Augustinus het kerkhof van de volken, rijken en culturen. Als zodanig is zijn oordeel over de geschiedenis negatief: ‘De geschiedenis als een alles overspoelende zee, leeg aan enige zin of enig doel, omdat de civitas terrena zich richt op de toekomst binnen het raam van de tijd. De vrede, het heil, dat het zoekt, is ‘de aardse vrede, die bestaat uit de goederen en bekoorlijkheden van het tijdelijk leven.’ (Aalders, 1977, p. 57).
Daarnaast legt hij een direct en positief verband tussen de civitas Dei en de geschiedenis. Er zijn tempora christiana, tijden van Gods voorzienigheid, die een ontvouwing, een rijping, een geleidelijke uitmonding zijn in de eeuwige sabbat. Dit is volgens Aalders dezelfde gedachte als wat Groen verstaat onder historisch christendom. (Aalders, 1977, p. 65). Dat Aalders zich in dit spoor bevindt, blijkt duidelijk uit zijn opmerking: ‘Allen, die Groens geschiedbeschouwing onder hun strenge en vaak hooghartige critiek stellen, moeten goed beseffen, dat zij daarmee een van de rijkste, kostbaarste en diepste bijbelse traditielagen van de christelijke Kerk veroordelen en uitsnijden.’ (Aalders, 1977, p. 65).
Het modernisme heeft de Kerk willen inlijven in de geschiedenis, maar omdat Bijbel en Kerk bij uitstek een zaak zijn van Historie, van tempora christiana, van zaken met eeuwigheidswaarde, zijn ze een blijvend Heden, hetwelk nimmer verleden tijd wordt en derhalve nimmer inlijfbaar in de geschiedenis. Daarbij verwijst Aalders naar Hebr. 4:7-11, Deut. 4, Psalm 136, Lukas 1 (Aalders, 1977, p. 66) alsook wijst hij op het woord efhapax, ‘eens voor altijd’ als onderstreping van de absoluutheid en eeuwigheid van de Openbaring en Historie tegenover een voortgaand tijdsproces. In deze lijn ziet Aalders de Kerk, de christenheid en in zekere zin Europa en vooral Nederland als historische werkelijkheden. Historie is het Heden der hemelse scheppingswerkelijkheid, het eeuwige Heden van Christus. Tegenover dit Heden der Historie staat de voortgang van de geschiedenis als ‘vrucht van Zijn scheppingsgerechtigheid en openbaart die in het Heden der genade. (Visser, 94, p. 24).
Tijden van Reformatie en Reveil zijn dan ook verlevendigingen van het historisch besef en entingen in de tempora christiana, het zijn uittochten uit de geschiedenis naar de Historie. Het omgekeerde is het geval bij revoluties, wier wezen is een losmaking van de geschiedenis van de Historie. Uitlevering daaraan is een uitleveren aan de machinamenta temporalia, de werktuigen van de tijd. Historie alleen verlost van de vernietigende en wegspoelende stroom van de tijd, de geschiedenis. (Aalders, 1977, p. 69).
Nauw hieraan verbonden is de notie van het Droit divin – ‘bedoeld als het begrip der hoogste wet, de ordening Gods tegenover des mensen eigendunkelijkheid’ - , dat wil zeggen, dat alle recht, waarheid en legitimiteit uit God zijn en op Openbaring berusten, dat geschiedkundige grootheden maakt tot historische grootheden en samenlevingen bewaart voor vernietiging in het lege en zinloze tijdsproces. Op dit punt botsen Historie en Modernisme het meest. (Aalders, 1977, p. 73).
Revolutie ontkent dit Droit divin en offert dus Historie op aan de geschiedenis, want ze ontleent haar inspiratie aan het afschudden van het verleden ter wille van een illusoire toekomst, leeft in een blind vertrouwen in het geschiedenisproces, is anti-historisch. (Aalders, 1977, p. 76). Dit Droit divin is historisch en behoudt haar gelding, het verwijst naar een boventijdelijke, eeuwige goddelijke oorsprong en is derhalve niet onderworpen aan het tijdsproces, het is de onveranderlijke, onvergankelijke, en daarom alle tijden, alle volken, alle rassen, alle generaties verbindende gemeenschappelijke grondslag en oorsprong, de boventijdelijke wortel van alle leven en het duurzame gehalte van alle humaniteit, een scheppingsgerechtigheid.
Het ontstaan van het moderne industrie-proletariaat lijkt de Europese mens losgeslagen te hebben van deze scheppingsgerechtigheid. De historische toegang tot dit recht is voor ons alleen de Heilige Schrift, waar de scheppingsgerechtigheid en Openbaring, Traditie en Historie samen komen, waar waarden en normen ineensmelten. Zo wordt de Schrift onvergankelijke canon van ware humaniteit, van de vooronderstelling van alle bestaan. (Aalders, 1977, p. 80).
1.4 Waarneming van geschiedenis
De kernvraag die zich voordoet, is hoe dit Evangelie door de christelijke gemeente bewaard kan worden in de voortgang van de geschiedenis. Volgens Aalders is er geen brief uit de Bijbel die hierin zo’n geheel eigen plaats inneemt en van zo’n unieke betekenis is dan de brief aan de Hebreeën. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 9,10) Negeren ervan kan ons fataal worden, want ‘de Brief aan de Hebreeën is geschreven naar aanleiding van het eerste onweer in de lente en in de bruidstijd van de nieuwtestamentische gemeente. Al de volgende buien komen van dezelfde kant op.’
De geschiedenis kent haar kritieke momenten, waarop een ‘logos tes paraklèseos’ op haar plaats is, het apostolische geloof wordt bedreigd en dus het voortbestaan van de gemeente. Tijd en tijdsgebeuren mogen dat geloof niet aantasten, want ten diepste is het eeuwige woord onaantastbaar en onbeweeglijk: wereld en geschiedenis kunnen dat niet bevatten, want het is van wezenlijk andere orde. De gemeente moet staande blijven, want ze wordt geschud door de overgang uit een heilsverwachting zonder-besef-van-tijd-en-geschiedenis in de harde en teleurstellende werkelijkheid van de durende tijd en de voortgaande geschiedenis en betrokken bij de beweeglijke en vergankelijke dingen. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 12,13).
Nu duurt de tijd voort, moet men dan de geschiedenis niet ernstig nemen? Wereld en geschiedenis zijn in Aalders’ optie doodsproces en dat van een wereld die Gods schepping is, doch nauwelijks nog als zodanig herkenbaar: de kosmos is chaos geworden, ze is van onbeweeglijk beweeglijk geworden, onderworpen aan de tijd die haar afvoert van haar goddelijke herkomst en dat is geen voorwaartse maar achterwaartse beweging. Geschiedenis is ont-schepping en maakt orde, schoonheid en sierlijkheid van de kosmos tot verleden. Geschiedenis is een proces zonder toekomst. Geschiedenis is eeuwigheid in staat van verval. (Aalders, 1969, p. 34).
Daarnaast is de wereld ook de plaats van de engelenheerschappij, die bemiddelaars zijn van de Openbaring van God, als vertolkers van de oorspronkelijke kosmische orde, de goddelijke scheppingswet. Hun spraak is bovenhistorisch; zij herinneren aan het oerverleden, dat voorafging aan tijd en geschiedenis. Engelenmachten beïnvloeden de wereld, de tijd en de geschiedenis. (Aalders, 1969, p. 35). Zij spreken door de mythe, die spreekt van het oerverleden en oerbegin. Het door engelenopenbaring gewekte mythische bewustzijn zoekt de terugkeer naar het oerbegin van alle dingen. Het zoekt een uitweg uit de geschiedenis. Het wil de historie als vervreemdingsproces teniet doen. Het leeft uit het heimwee naar de schepping en het weet dat alleen de overwinning en verlossing van de tijd, als doodsproces, de toegang daartoe opent. (Aalders, 1969, p. 36).
Ook het volk Israël leeft via Michaël uit de engelenopenbaring, al stond Israël niet statisch en reactionair in de geschiedenis, het is wel het volk van de geschiedenis, van de toekomst en van de hoop. Hoe kan het nu onder Mozes uit Egypte uitgegaan zijn? Egypte is een land dat sterk leeft uit de statische macht van de kosmische mythe en door haar fixatie op de schepping is het een voorbeeld van een engelregiment dat in het volk een anti-historische gerichtheid bewerkte. Israël ontdekt als enige volk het wezen van de tijd, het tijdsgebeuren, de geschiedenis. Het heeft niet alleen de geschiedenis als breuk in de schepping onderkend, maar tevens heeft het de geschiedenis gezien als de zondeval.
Voor Israël is de schepping voltooid met de sabbat als voltooiing van de schepping, de sabbat is een vervuld heden, de kosmos in rust, vast en zeker, onveranderlijk, onbeweeglijk in de kringloop van vaste tijden en zonder geschiedenis. (Aalders, 1969, p. 38). In Israël mondt de mythe uit in historie, de kosmische sabbat in geschiedenis, waarvan het oerbegin van God en de geschiedenis van de mens is. Zo dat de sabbat heilig is, maar de tijd zondig. Geschiedenis is de dood sterven, vervreemding van de goddelijke oorsprong. (Aalders, 1969, p. 39).
Het loofhuttenfeest viert de bevrijding uit de tijd en geschiedenis. Michaël houdt voor Israël de herinnering wakker aan het oerverleden zoals andere engelen dat voor de volkeren doen. Daarom is Israël zeer anti-geschiedenis, staat het principiëel en radicaal tegenover de geschiedenis, want het weet de schepping eeuwig en volmaakt en het kent de tijd als vervreemding van de schepping en daarom als zonde en dood. (Aalders, 1969, p. 40).
In het woord ‘teschuva’ (bekering, omkeer, terugkeer) wordt het door Israël gekende brandende verlangen naar de oertoestand als in een kernbegrip weergegeven, het brandende verlangen om de exodus door een radicale omkeer en boete te vervolmaken tot een exodus uit de tijd en geschiedenis, waarbij het proces van de historie terug-gewenteld wordt naar de heilige, oorspronkelijke sabbat. (Aalders, 1969, p. 41). Hoewel alle volken er iets van hebben (Rom.2,15) is Israël het enige volk dat de geschiedenis onderkend heeft als vloek, doem en oordeel, waarvoor de mens alleen aansprakelijk is en alleen een ‘teschuva’ kan hem daarvan verlossen. Deze tragiek hoor je in profeten en Johannes de Doper. (Aalders, 1969, p. 42).
Wat engelen niet kunnen, doet Jezus: Hij doet door Zijn lijden, sterven en opstanding in de historie door een historische daad de geschiedenis en hem die de macht heeft over de geschiedenis, teniet en overwint hem, Hij brengt de beweging van tijd tot stilstand en tot rust in een nieuwe sabbat en zo mag de mens leven in een openbaringslicht, anders dan dat der engelen. (Aalders, 1969, p. 44). Een licht dat het onverwelkelijke en onverderfelijke Heden is van Gods eigen tegenwoordigheid, dat schepsel en schepping goddelijk nieuw maakt. Velen uit het Oude Testament hebben uitgezien naar het herstelde oerverleden van de kosmos, maar hebben dat niet gezien.
Christus’ openbaring is dus meer dan het herstelde oerverleden van de schepping. Om dat goed aan te geven wordt het woord ‘katapausis’ gebruikt. In de Zoon wordt de sabbat van de kosmos tot ‘katapausis’, tot vrede als het engelenregiment is overgegaan in de monarchie van de Zoon. Engelen hebben de duivel niet kunnen weerhouden, maar de Zoon herstelt alles. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 46,47).
Doem van tijd en tijdsgebeuren hebben geen vat meer op het geloof in de apostolische tijd; Jezus heeft de dood overwonnen evenals de geschiedenis als doodsproces en Zijn opstanding en – spoedige - wederkomst zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden, zodat de vraag naar de geschiedenis verdwijnt. Toch breekt in diezelfde tijd het besef door, dat er toch tijd, wereldtijd en geschiedenis lijken te liggen tussen opstanding en wederkomst. Dit brengt de apostolische gemeente in grote onzekerheid. (Aalders, 1969, p. 48). De gemeente raakt verward en verliest haar blijdschap, zekerheid, verwachting.
De Christenen uit de apostolische tijd staan, omdat ze Jezus’ eer en heerlijkheid hebben gezien, buiten de tijd en buiten de geschiedenis. Zo komt ze voor een ontzettend dilemma te staan: Het Jezus-geloof verlaten of de historische realiteit ontvluchten. Het eerste zal leiden tot een volslagen nihilisme en het laatste is een onmogelijkheid. In deze situatie wordt volgens Aalders de Brief aan de Hebreeën een conquistador (Aalders, 1969, p. 48), die de gemeente een weg wijst in de durende tijd.
1.5 Openbaringsvormen
Nu ligt het woord ‘hoop’ in de brief in het verlengde van de belofte aan Abraham en Israël, en is derhalve niet verbonden met een historische heilsverwachting, geschiedenis of tijd. Deze hoop wordt in het Oude Testament sterk verbonden met de wet, die doet geloven dat ‘God bestaat en een Beloner is dergenen die Hem zoeken’, de wet geeft hoop op ‘een betere opstanding’. En dan te bedenken dat die wet door een engel is geopenbaard. Engelen houden de herinnering aan de scheppingsoorsprong levend en de wet wekt heimwee naar die situatie. (Aalders, 1969, p. 53).
Wat nu de wet doet bij Israël, dat doen mythen (Aalders, 1969, p. 173) bij de andere volken, want wet en mythe liggen dicht bij elkaar. De authentieke mythe is een religieus begrip, waarin het gaat om God en mens, hemel en aarde, eeuwigheid en tijd. Ze wordt niet bedacht, verdicht, gemaakt, maar ontspringt uit een bovennatuurlijke bron. (Aalders, 1969, p. 54). De mythe onthult de archai, de beginselen waar alle bestaan op berust; ze is goddelijke openbaringsbron, waarheid en daarom wet. (Aalders, 1969, p. 55). De mythe herinnert de mens aan de goddelijke oorsprong aller dingen en wekt zo de mens op om boven het zichtbare, onvaste en vergankelijke uit te blikken naar de wereld van het heilige, eeuwige, onbeweeglijke Zijn. Om met Vergilius te spreken: ‘Restitutio in integrum’, terugkeer tot de heilige oorsprong. (Aalders, 1969, p. 56).
De hoop van Hebreeën gaat om de hoop op de schepping, die eeuwig, heilig, volstrekt geldend en normerend van aard is. (Aalders, 1969, p. 57). Toch zijn wet en mythe niet identiek. De mythe komt via engelen, de wet – in de Hebreeënbrief aangeduid als ‘de stem der woorden’ - komt in de vorm van een herhaling van de scheppingswoorden tot Israël. (Aalders, 1969, p. 58). Dus veel sterker, direkter, nabijer, indringender dan in de mythe is deze boodschap in ‘de stem der woorden’. De hoop van de wet – net als van de mythe - staat dus niet in verband met de geschiedenis, maar zij is anti-geschiedenis en verticaal gericht. Gelovigen overschrijden de lineaire tijd, de tijd als doodsproces, en zijn gericht op de Onzienlijke. Hun verwachting is dus radicaal verticaal en heeft niets te maken met tijd en tijdsgebeuren, ja staat zelfs antithetisch tegenover de aardse tijd, is terugkeer naar de sabbat, de schepping. (Aalders, 1969, p. 80).
Een prangende vraag is wat de uitwerking van de wet is in de ziel van het volk Israël. De ambivalentie van de Openbaring is doorbroken door het voorbeeld-ige geloof van Mozes die daardoor het volk plaatsvervangend tot verbondsvolk maakt en via tabernakel- en offerdienst, die de wet verbeelden, het volk het geloof leert als zekerheid der dingen die men hoopt. Kern daarin is dat de mens in het offer zijn bloed, ziel en leven teruggeeft aan God. Zo wordt het een ‘olah’, een opvaart, een Gode toegewijde gave. (Aalders, 1969, p. 64). Zo komt Israël antithetisch in de geschiedenis te staan door ernst te maken met de Overzijde. Geloven en hopen is dan een beweging in de tijd van een geheel andere orde, niet regressief, niet progressief, niet reactionair, niet revolutionair. Een beweging niet in historische denkvormen te vangen, want ze valt buiten de historische denominaties en zo wordt het: voor de gelovigen van het oude verbond wordt hopen een stervensbeweging aan de wereld en de geschiedenis. Staan in de genade van de wetsopenbaring betekent: sterven aan de tijd en het tijdsgebeuren, en naderen tot het hemelse vaderland. Het is het leven tot opstijgende rook maken. (Aalders, 1969, p. 66).
Mythe en wet zijn oorsprong van alle religies en religie is de ontdekking en erkenning van tweeërlei werkelijkheid: een eeuwige en een vergankelijke, een onbeweeglijke en een wisselvallige, een hemelse en een aardse. Religie is openbaring, sprake, deelt waarheid en gerechtigheid als hemelse realiteiten mee. Engelen tonen in mythe en wet dat hemel en engelen, sabbat en paradijs, schepping en kosmos in onaantastbare gaafheid en oorspronkelijkheid buiten het verderf van de val, de tijd en de geschiedenis zijn gebleven. Mythe en wet verbinden met het eeuwige goddelijke Boven. (Aalders, 1969, p. 68). De blik van de nieuwtestamentische gelovigen heeft dat in vollere zin gezien. Zij hebben door de blik des geloofs de werkelijkheid der schepping ontdekt! De volle ontplooiing is de bijzondere betrekking van het evangelie tot die hemelse scheppingsrealiteit. (Aalders, 1969, p. 70).
Hoe groter nu de afstand wordt tussen opstanding en wederkomst hoe neveliger het uitzicht. De uitgestelde wederkomst ondergraaft de opstandingsblijdschap van de na-apostolische gemeente en daarmee haar geloof zelf. Hoofdzaak van het onderricht van de brief is: dat de openbaring van de Zoon in een bijzondere betrekking staat tot de schepping. De brief maakt helder dat de mens weer vrijmoedige toegang heeft tot het heilige Boven, tot de sabbat, het paradijs, de boom des levens en dat Jezus in het hemelse heiligdom onze eeuwige Hogepriester is, Die ver uitgaat boven het feit dat Hij straks komt om als Rechter de wereld te richten. (Aalders, 1969, p. 73).
Tot die volle hoop wil de auteur van Hebreeën de lezers leiden door tijd en geschiedenis niet als imponerend te zien; aan de wederkomst zelf is de gemeente ontrukt, omdat zij door het geloof al lang aan de tijd en het tijdsgebeuren ontrukt is en leeft in de dingen die Boven zijn. Zo heeft Christus de gemeente al losgemaakt van de historische aardse wederkomstverwachting en richt haar hemelwaarts. Dan alleen kan ze de druk van de wereld en de geschiedenis overleven. Ze moet zich richten op de vaste onbeweeglijke realiteiten, die boven het tijdsgebeuren staan; ze moet de overgang maken van de lineaire historische horizontale verwachting naar de verticale gerichtheid op de dingen die ‘Boven’ zijn. Daarvoor is een ‘metanoia’ , een omzetting van het bewustzijn, nodig.
En zo komt Aalders ertoe ‘historisch denken te zien als van God vervreemd denken, omdat het ontsproten is aan de oerzonde, aan de hoogmoed, aan de waan van zelf een god, een schepper, te zijn. Historisch denken is bewustzijnsemancipatie tegenover God en Zijn scheppingswerk, is schending van de goddelijke sabbat. (Aalders, 1969, p. 78).
Genoemde ‘metanoia’ is zuivering van het verkeerde bewustzijn en geschiedt door besprenging met Jezus’ bloed, door openbaring van het licht dat een ex-orcistische werking heeft. De Zoon kan wat engelen niet konden: afdalen in tijd en geschiedenis. (Aalders, 1969, p. 82). Zo wordt het evangelie geschiedenis. De Zoon als afstraling van Gods heerlijkheid geeft Licht van hogere orde. Zijn ‘bloedstorting’ is een opzettelijke daad binnen tijd en geschiedenis. Daarin doodt God het doodsproces van het aardse leven. (Aalders, 1969, p. 87). Het is voor Hem het volstrekte Pascha, de meest radicale uittocht uit de slavernij van het zondige tijdsgebeuren en terugkeer tot de heilige werkelijkheid van schepper en schepping. Het is de ‘katapausis’ van de zondige rebellie van de historie. Het historisch gebeuren van het offer van de Zoon heeft het historisch gebeuren van de roof van de eerste mens overwonnen en te niet gedaan. De tijd, de geschiedenis, de dood zijn in Zijn dood verslonden. (Aalders, 1969, p. 88).
1.6 Het werk van de Zoon
De oorspronkelijke schepping is het werk van de Zoon, daarom heeft die werkelijkheid deel aan het goddelijke Zijn en heeft eeuwigheidskarakter. Nu is de weg naar de scheppingsrealiteit door de Zoon heropend. Hij leeft in de ‘anabasis’, de opvaart naar de heerlijkheid van de oorspronkelijke schepping. Hij neemt de gelovigen daarin mee, zodat ze niet meer leven in de tijd en geschiedenis, maar in de dingen die Boven zijn. Wat zich daar afspeelt, is voor haar veel belangrijker dan wat gebeurt op het lineaire horizontale tijdsvlak. Voorzover ze nog tijdsbewustzijn heeft, is dat louter apocalyptisch tijdsbewustzijn. (Aalders, 1969, p. 93).
Evenwel is deze schepping anders, want ze draagt niet meer in zich de mogelijkheid van de vergankelijkheid, van de veroudering, van de verandering, van de dood en zo blijken de engelen voorbereiders te zijn van een heerlijker Iemand dan zij zijn, want de Zoon wordt erfgenaam van alle, onbeweeglijke, dingen. (Aalders, 1969, p. 94).
Om dit mee te maken, is, zoals gezegd, een metanoia nodig, een geestelijke heroriëntatie, een omzetting van het bewustzijn uit de benauwende, enge, dodelijke waanvoorstellingen van het historische denken naar de geheel nieuwe denkvormen van de levende, eeuwige onvergankelijke, hemelse werkelijkheid. Via de prediking wordt men ingeleid in deze denk- en spreekwijze, want taal en bewustzijn hebben alles met elkaar te maken; men leert de ‘parrhesia’, - het vrijuit spreken - door het geloof en dit wordt met niets minder aangeduid als ‘geboorte anothen’, van omhoog, (Aalders, 1969, p. 98) waardoor de mens radicaal verandert, een andere taal, de taal ontsproten aan de openbaring, gaat spreken. (Aalders, 1969, p. 99).
Aangeraakt door de mythe betekent aangeraakt worden door woordopenbaring. De mythe herinnert aan het oerverleden van de schepping en draagt het kenmerk van het oorspronkelijke, fundamentele en dat tegenover het armzalige heden; zij is de tegenwaarde van progressie, van historische activiteit, van culturele moderniteiten en is zelf regressief, remmend, conservatief. (Aalders, 1969, p. 101). Mythische taal is nooit historisch, maar verticaal, statisch en wil waarheid openbaren en het wezen der dingen vorsen. Daarom is haar taal de aantonende wijs, waarin de dingen verschijnen en het wezen van het scheppingslicht doorbreekt; ze verdicht de aardse realiteit zo dat het Zijn er weer in verschijnt. De mythische mens ervaart de wereld en zichzelf als vervreemding, ontworteling, bederf. (Aalders, 1969, p. 102).
De stem der woorden in de wet is in de gebiedende wijs gesteld, als proclamatie, als gebod, neergelegd in de Torah, de moedertaal van Israël, waarmee ze horig is aan God de Schepper. Daar klinkt de passie in door, want het is een strijd tegen de loodzware beweging die wij geschiedenis noemen. (Aalders, 1969, p. 104). Het zondige tijdsgebeuren wordt in de wet weersproken, want ze roept de oorsprong van de schepping in herinnering. Dat is nu het goddelijke wonder van de Schrift dat ze niet tot verleden kan worden, als historisch document niet met stomheid kan worden geslagen, want het is de ‘stem der woorden.’ Het is de taal waarin de melancholie van de mythische taal is verdrongen door het besef van schuld en oordeel. Immers, de zonde is oorsprong van de tegenstelling tussen schepping en geschiedenis. (Aalders, 1969, p. 105).
Het anti-historische karakter van de wetstaal blijkt volgens Aalders ook uit het gegeven dat het hebreeuws alleen een ‘omnitemporal Imperfectum’, een onvoltooid verleden tijd bezit, die wordt toegepast voor alle tijdsvormen. Het gevolg daarvan is dat tijd van de mens in het Oude Testament wordt uitgedrukt als dat heden en toekomst niet te scheiden zijn van het verleden; het verleden is wezenlijk en bepaalt heden en toekomst. De thorah stelt de mens met de rug naar de toekomst en met het gezicht naar de oorsprong en het heilige begin der dingen. Geschiedenis is een achterwaartse beweging. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 106, 107).
Niet anders - en op een wijze als mythe en wet niet hebben gekund - is het met de taal van de Geest in het Evangelie dat als vrucht van de metanoia een eigen vocabulaire schept. Aalders ziet de climax hiervan in de Brief aan de Hebreeën. Deze nieuwe taal spreekt ook anders over de scheppingswerkelijkheid, want men staat nu onder de Zoon en is dus vrij van slaafse vrees en onmondigheid ten opzichte van de kosmische archonten. Nadat God alles geschapen heeft en Zijn werken voltooid zijn, is er geen tijd, geen geschiedenis meer, doch alleen de eeuwige sabbat. Daartegenover is de wereld het onvaste, grillige, onbetrouwbare, wezenloze, wanordelijke, waarin de ruimte verwoest wordt door de geschiedenis. De scheppingswerkelijkheid is als ruimte het heilige Boven, dat niet wordt, niet vergaat, niet veroudert; ze is onvergankelijk heden. (Aalders, 1969, p. 113). Door de Zoon is de toegang tot boven ontsloten, krijgt men deel aan het onbeweeglijk koninkrijk, Hebrews 12,22-24. Zo komt het menselijk bewustzijn los van tijd en geschiedenis. De vaste spijs en grotere volkomenheid is nodig om staande te blijven in de aanvechting van de tijd. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 114,115).
Door het bloed van Christus wordt de mens bevrijd van de doem van de tijd; is niet meer gericht op de illusoire toekomst van het horizontale tijdsgebeuren, maar op de geschiedenisloze, hemelse scheppingssabbat, op de dingen die boven zijn. (Aalders, 1969, p. 116). Bevrijd door het bloed van Jezus ben je geen historisch vastgeklonken gevangene meer van de tijd, maar een Hebreeër die als ‘vrije’ en ‘zoon’ de uittocht en terugkeer naar het beloofde land van de scheppingssabbat aanvaardt. (Aalders, 1969, p. 117).
Zo wordt de wederkomst slechts uitvloeisel van de incarnatie, waarbij Christus tijd en wereld overwint en de gelovige in principe bevrijd is van de geschiedenis en haar macht en uitziet in te gaan in het Boven van de heilige schepping. Dat uitzien is onafhankelijk van het duren van de tijd voorwaarts, maar afhankelijk van het zien opwaarts. (Aalders, 1969, p. 118). De weg van de verticale beweging wordt beschreven als een ‘agon’, een wedloop, loopbaan, een hemelwaartse beweging. ‘Agon’ ook te vertalen als strijd, inspanning met angst, de strijd met tegensprekers. De last en zonde die de gelovigen belemmeren terug te keren zijn de historische machtsopenbaringen van dood en duivel. (Aalders, 1969, p. 119).
In de geschiedenis staan is meegesleurd worden in de jacht naar een fata morgana die in telkens nieuwe vormen en kleuren aan de horizon van de tijd verschijnt. Dit is gehecht in denken en willen van de mens. (Aalders, 1969, p. 120). De tijd is tot zijnsbeginsel geworden en belet de mens het inslaan van de verticale weg, hetwelk een agonie, een stervensbelevenis, is voor hem. (Aalders, 1969, p. 121). De mens van de verticale weg is in een andere beweging opgenomen: de beweging die in de Zoon door de Geest van de Vader uitgaat en tot de Vader terugkeert. In de botsing tussen de horizontale vooruitgang en verticale terugkeer treedt aan het daglicht dat de geschiedenis als de beweging van de zichzelf overstijgende mens die als God wil zijn, in haar diepste wortel Godsmoord is. Ze verdraagt het niet en kan het niet verdragen dat zij eraan herinnerd wordt dat haar tijd en dus haar vrijheid waandenkbeelden zijn en dat zij geen toekomst heeft, maar leeft met het vooruitzicht van de dood. Het historische denken is ultimo ratio, een laatste waarde, die hij niet kan en niet wil prijsgeven. De lineaire toekomst is de laatste barricade, waarachter hij zich tegen alles wat het Boven vertegenwoordigt keert. (Aalders, 1969, p. 123).
1.7 De worsteling van het geloof
Dit alles gaat gepaard met innerlijke en uiterlijke strijd. (Aalders, 1969, p. 123) De verticalist is een voortdurend aangevochtene, want hij gaat tegen de algemene beweging van de massa in. Het geloof heeft deel aan de hemelse werkelijkheid en is in zichzelf al deel van die werkelijkheid. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 126, 127). Aalders ziet hierin de grond voor het gegeven dat het geloof der gelovigen reeds de werkelijkheid, de substantie, de wezenlijkheid, van die hemelse dingen is. Als gelovigen hebben zij er in hun geloof reeds deel aan. Het geloof is daarom het bewijs van een realiteit die nog niet gezien wordt. De strijd tegen de wereld, tegen de aardse tijd, tegen de historische machten, tegen de geschiedenis is de aardse verwerkelijking van de ‘hypostasis’, het hemelse bezit van het geloof en een bewijs van de echtheid van het geloof. (Aalders, 1969, p. 127).
Deze strijd moeten we positief duiden, want ze is een actieve stervensbeweging, de geboorteweg voor de eeuwigheid en het afsterven aan de geschiedenis, hetwelk geïntensiveerd wordt door Jezus’ dood en opstanding. (Aalders, 1969, p. 128). Via de ‘paideia’ wordt de gelovige ontrukt aan het doodsproces van tijd en geschiedenis en geleid naar de heerlijkheid van het onbeweeglijk koninkrijk om te worden wat hij was voor de geschiedenis, maar dan op onvergelijkbaar heerlijker wijze in de Zoon. Dit wordt door Luther genoemd de ‘transitus’ die wordt tot ‘fide transferri ab eo, in geloof door Jezus overgedragen worden uit het Egypte der wereld naar de vervulling der belofte. (Aalders, 1969, p. 131).
Naast de verticale geloofsweg als ‘agon’ is er ook leven van de vrijheid van de heerlijkheid der kinderen Gods. Deze hemelse werkelijkheid – oecumene - is er al en de wederkomst is slechts de openbaarwording van die heerlijkheid. Geschiedenis mondt dan ook niet uit in de oecumene, want is slechts beeld van Godsvervreemding en is een doodsproces en niet de aardse historische mens, maar de van de geschiedenis verloste mens krijgt die hemelse waardigheid. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 135,136,137). De ecclesia, als voorlopige gestalte van de hemelse oecumene en als arrabon, onderpand van wat Christus geeft, toont op aarde iets van die heerlijkheid door huis van God te zijn met als centrale punt het altaar. In de ecclesia bouwt God Zijn huis tot de volkomenheid der heilsvoleinding. (Aalders, 1969, p. 142).
Doel van de Hebreeënbrief is dus de neiging - veroorzaakt door het uitblijven van de wederkomst zich tot de aarde en geschiedenis te keren - te weerstaan door de gemeente op te roepen tot de verticale weg. Ze moet zich de heilszekerheid niet laten ontnemen door te verachteren in de genade, die een vruchtbare voedingsbodem schiep, waarin het onkruid welig tieren kan. (Aalders, 1969, p. 145). En dat is de leer die uitgaat van de werkelijkheid van het bestaan van de wereld en van de voortgang der geschiedenis en die op grond daarvan een ombuiging van, zoal niet een breuk met de authentieke, apostolische prediking als onvermijdelijk en daarom noodzakelijk aanvaardt.
Een ombuiging van het geloof in die richting zou het Evangelie verhistoriceren en transformeren tot een hoop op het vlak van het tijdsgebeuren en in het raam van de wereldgeschiedenis en dus een verhistorisering van de openbaring. Als dat gebeurt, transformeert men volgens Aalders Jezus tot een werelds principe, een aardse messias. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 145, 146. Nooit en te nimmer mag men heil verwereldlijken; vieringen op die wijze gedaan zijn vieringen met gevallen scheppingskrachten en symbolen worden strijdbanieren van christelijke wereldvernieuwers. (Aalders, 1969, p. 152).
Vanuit de Hebreeënbrief ziet Aalders middels de naam Ezau/Edom wereldrijken en culturen aangeduid, die de rechtvaardigen en vromen vervolgen en verdrukken; zij blijken niet meer te staan onder bevoogding van een engel; het besef van het oerverleden is in hen gedood en ze leven in de onmiddellijkheid van de zichtbare, aardse dingen. Hun voogd is satan, de mens van de wetteloosheid, die heilige zaken afschaft, in beginsel anarchistisch en nihilistisch is. Omdat de Schrift apokalyptisch spreekt, voorzegt zij afgronden en duisternissen als wij nog ‘sjalom!’ roepen. (Aalders, 1969, p. 156). Wie nu de ‘Ezau-zonde’ begaat en de terugval maakt uit het hemelse in het aardse, uit het eeuwige in het tijdelijke, uit het geestelijke in het stoffelijke, die heeft iets verspeeld, waartoe berouw geen toegang meer geeft, want voor de aarde, voor de geschiedenis, voor het tijdsgebeuren is er geen Christus. (Aalders, 1969, p. 157).
Nu zijn de laatste tijden aangebroken, want de mythische en wettische periode zijn voorbij, hebben hun kracht en inhoud verloren, omdat zij geen openbaringsgehalte meer hebben. De ‘katechon’, de weerhoudende kracht van het mythische en wettische is weg, want met de komst van de Zoon is de taak der engelen volbracht en zijn het nog slechts dienende geesten. (Aalders, 1969, p. 159). Sindsdien doet satan zijn uiterste best de wereld te beheersen en stuwt de geschiedenis voort naar het eind, hij wordt overste der wereld en de apocalypse breekt aan en de vollledige confrontatie heeft plaats. De ecclesia staat voor de keuze tussen de aardse werkelijkheid en de hemelse oikoumene. (Aalders, 1969, p. 160). Het avondmaal bepaalt de gemeente bij het feit van het exodus-volk-zijn dat de wereld, tijd en geschiedenis achter zich laat en zich geestelijk beweegt naar de uittocht. Aanhangers van de leer der spijzen ontvluchten dit dilemma door vast te houden aan de aarde en Christus naar de aarde trekken. (Aalders, 1969, p. 161).
De ecclesia staat voor het dilemma: Christus is Degene Die in de tijd, de wereld, de geschiedenis gekomen is, om het aards-historische als een zondige en voor God onbestaanbare werkelijkheid te overwinnen en in Zijn zondoffer de toegang te openen tot het hemelse heiligdom. Aanvaarden wij in Hem de apocalyptiek van de wereld en de geschiedenis, of sluiten wij de apocalyptiek uit en kiezen voor een historisch-aangepaste verwereldlijkte Christus? (Aalders, 1969, 162).
De durende tijd is het blijvende skandalon van de ecclesia om de verwachting te stellen op de tijd, in de wereld, in de geschiedenis. Het nieuwe testament kent ook nog een andere vorm van aardse historische lineaire vervreemding van de genade: het chiliasme dat de wederkomst van Christus vereenzelvigt met de komst van de Messias van Israël, met het 1000-jarig rijk, met Jezus’ koningschap over Israël en de wereld. Christus heeft een eind gemaakt aan het wezen van de geschiedenis en daarom is er in de geschiedenis geen enkele verwachting meer. (Aalders, 1969, p. 166). Hoe waarachtiger gemeente hoe vaster zij staat in de genade, hoe gehoorzamer in kritieke momenten in de geschiedenis, hoe groter haar gezag en invloed in de wereld. (Aalders, 1969, p. 168). Wel geeft haar verticale gerichtheid haar vreemdelingschap op de wereld, die in haar agonische bestaan haar roeping vervult. Waar het geloof onvast wordt in de genade en de gemeente vervreemdt van haar verticale hoop verliest zij haar zeggingskracht, gezag en ‘katechon’-werking. (Aalders, 1969, p. 170).
1.8 Conclusies/samenvatting
De ware historicus ervaart volgens Aalders de angst van de geschiedenis. Zoals Daniël, Luther en Groen van Prinsterer, die hadden hetgeen bij vele historici ontbreekt: historie als het vlammende schrift van de levende God. Zo leren we geschiedenis zien als in de eeuwigheid uitmondend.
De enige toekomstverwachting ligt in de Historie, waarin God afdaalt in de tijd, aevum, onvergankelijke tijd. Daarvoor is verankering in Gods openbaring nodig teneinde de geloof niet te laten seculariseren. Daarom moet de civitas Dei, de Historie, zich niet laten inlijven in tijd en geschiedenis. Ze moet i.t.t. de revolutie het Droit divin als zijnde van eeuwigheidswaarde,erkennen.
De ecclesia krijgt een maan- en troostwoord in de brief aan de Hebreeën. De wederkomst blijft uit en de geschiedenis eist haar tol. Een gevaarlijke situatie derhalve voor de ecclesia zich op te laten nemen in het doodsproces, dat geschiedenis heet.
Gods heeft Zich steeds helderder bekend gemaakt; eerst via mythen, toen via engelen en ten laatste en het duidelijkst en definitief via de Zoon; alle die roepen terug naar het begin, de oorsprong der dingen, de schepping. De Zoon maakt de geschiedenis teniet en opent de toegang tot het hemels heiligdom. Israel is het volk dat besef van deze dingen heeft en verlangt via ‘teschuva’ naar wat geweest is.
De ecclesia staat voor een dilemma: Het Jezus-geloof verlaten of de historische werkelijkheid ontvluchten. Hebreeën wijst de weg van het verticale bewustzijn, gericht op de Onzienlijke en het leven tot opstijgende rook maken. Ze moet zich niet laten verwarren door de durende tijd, maar middels metanoia zich reinigen van bezoedelde gedachten. Dat is mogelijk door de Zoon. Hij opent de weg naar de scheppingwerkelijkheid en richt op wat boven is en trekt af van de aarde, de tijd, de geschiedenis.
Dit alles brengt een grote strijd met zich mee, want het lineaire verdraagt het verticale niet. Evenwel heeft de gelovige reeds alles, want ‘het geloof is in bezit van de dingen die men hoopt. De paideia ontrukt de ecclesia aan tijd en geschiedenis en leidt naar de heerlijkheid. De arrabon weerspiegelt wat zijn zal. Gevaar van verachtering is werkelijk. Vandaar de oproep in de brief.
De zonde van Ezau, terugval in de geschiedenis, bedreigt de gemeente, verhistoriseert het evangelie en verlekkert zich aan de leer der spijzen. Zo is de ecclesia een skandalon in de durende tijd, maar ook een roepende in de woestijn, die van de tijd en geschiedenis geen enkele verwachting meer koestert.
Vertimas raštu - anglų Turning, then, to consider the object of our enquiry, we find that we keep encountering the names of philosophers, above all Plato, in the broad oeuvre of Dr. Willem Aalders. In secondary literature, too, links are frequently forged between Plato and Christianity, Plato and Augustine, etc. It is incontestable that Plato’s influence is (or has been) great and has held sway — beginning with the Hellenistic period — far beyond the Greek philosophical tradition. Hellenistic Judaism, for instance, strongly bears his marks. Philo of Alexandria (25 B.C. – A.D. 50) goes so far as to infer that Plato must have had contact with Jewish sages who instructed him in the transcendent nature of God. The Christian church, too, highly valued Plato: in Augustine’s opinion, Plato is the pagan thinker who comes closer than any other to Christianity. Centuries later, Dr. C.J. de Vogel posits that Plato exerted a healthy and enriching influence upon Christianity, and the abovementioned Dr. W. Aalders characterizes Plato as a kind of augur of Advent, comparable with the figure of Simeon in Luke’s gospel (Van den Brink, 2000, pp. 55, 56):
Would it be too ambitious to describe Plato on this basis as a sort of Simeon character; that as it were ‘there was a man of Athens, which man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of the nations’ (after Luke 2:25)? Would it be too bold to regard his Politeia as an Advental prologue to Augustine’s City of God? (Aalders, 1984, p. 158)
It would be only honest to point out that Aalders acknowledges elsewhere that Socrates and Plato were in the ‘outer court’, not having sounded the depths of the heart and of sin, and that they served as no more than a “primer of the Christian faith”. Aalders considers this a chronic shortcoming of the Platonics. (Aalders, 1984, p. 177)
According to Aalders, it was Plato above anyone else who drew attention to the effect of lies in succeeding to rob man of his perspective Above, toward God and the eternal divine order of being. For this alone, we ought to hold him in esteem. He does not hesitate to enrol Plato in the cloud of witnesses from Hebrews 11, to whom it is given to have been witnesses through faith yet not having received the fulfilment of the promise. In his judgement, Plato was convicted of a Godly intervention, of an hour of redemption (Aalders, 1984, pp 160, 161). Van den Brink likewise considers that Plato’s considerable influence is above all to be put down to his conviction that our everyday reality is not all that there is, and is not even the actuality. The actual world is of a spiritual nature, and it is to this that man must align himself. Christians gladly echoed this from him. Plato’s urging that we should not engross ourselves in the world of the everyday met with their accord. His belief, furthermore, in absolute standards and values, in a divine providence, in an afterlife and accordingly also in the immortality of the human soul, makes for numerous points of comparison. (Van den Brink, 2000, p. 56)
A quite different perspective is that of Dr. A.P. Bos, who considers that Christianity embraced Platonism far too uncritically, leading to the rise of an unbiblical view of science. In his opinion, there occurs in Greek philosophy an interpretational perspective (zinsperspectief) which would have itself set forth as the rational alternative to any faith tradition altogether (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 175). Bos lays the blame upon the allegorical exposition practised by such figures as Philo of Alexandria, and Augustine, whereby the Bible is enshrouded and God’s Word is transformed “from a source of belief into a philosophical doctrine of salvation whose meaning might only be grasped by the philosophically trained, using rational powers of understanding” (Bos, 1996, pp 10, 11). He regards allegorical exposition as being of pagan, Greek origin. Where Aalders comes out in favour of a (re-)evaluation of Plato’s insights concerning the distinction between the material world and the more greatly valued spiritual reality defined over against it, Bos regards this distinction as contrary to the Biblical doctrine of creation. In an article in the publication Beweging (Beweging, 1985, p. 17), Bos pleads fervently that they also ought to be given their due who have sought to plough their own philosophical furrow by seeking an integrally Christian philosophy in order to reach, on that basis, a judgement of the Platonism defended by Dr. Aalders. Only then, as far as he is concerned, can we attain a careful conclusion on the issue of whether Plato was “by nature more poetically and hieratically than philosophically inclined” and whether his attitude is predominantly characterized by a “spiritual openness and receptiveness, a Mary-attitude” and whether his dialogues are to be seen as “a pre-Christian, Advent-shaded heralding of meditation, of an inward, prayerful consideration of truths with an eye to their practical application in real life.” (Beweging, 1985, p. 18; Aalders, 1984, pp. 45, 47).
As Dr. K. van der Zwaag would have it, Bos’ thinking is diametrically opposed to that of the Reformed (Hervormd) theologian and cultural critic Aalders, who makes a strong case for the Christian nature of Greek Platonic thinking, particularly in its doctrine of to Ōn (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 175). Bos’ attitude in his Inspired by Plato reveals his air of misgiving when he writes, “It is often put forward as a proof of God’s providential dealings in history that Greek culture, with its impressive achievements in the field of science and philosophy, came to fruition before the era of the coming into being of the Christian church, so that the results of the Greeks’ spiritual activity were also able to be put to service in the development of a Christian life-ethic and worldview as well as for education suited thereto (W. Aalders; F. de Graaff)” (Bos, 1996, p. 8). Aalders’ riposte to this article by Dr. Bos speaks volumes. Here is merely one quotation: “I must, to my surprise, sharply oppose Prof. Bos, who declares emphatically that the dualism which I (following Augustine!) set out is absolutely not authentically Christian but is rather ‘a philosophical strand external to the Christian tradition’.” (Beweging, 1985, p. 19).
The abovementioned strands appear to converge in Augustine, who as it were Christianizes the Platonic heritage, in which he interprets the central concept in Plato’s thinking — that of Ideas — as thoughts of God. (Van den Brink, 2000, p. 56) This is also the opinion of D. Visser, who, while pointing out that Aalders “sings Plato’s praises”, nevertheless believes that “his praise of Augustine is an even loftier pæan” (Visser, … [work not specified in the Dutch original text], p. 21). Aalders does actually also concede that “the Christian faith enjoyed its richest and fullest elaboration during its transition from Jewish sect to world church in the theology of Augustine” (Aalders, 1992, p. 155). Subsequent to Augustine, Greek wisdom became a victorious and acclaimed life-ethic and worldview in the same way that Jewish thinking after Paul did. “Plato, who as a teacher of classical wisdom happened to have dominated minds for a millennium, was supplanted by the church father Augustine.” (Aalders, 1992, p. 156) With his life-ethic and worldview, it was he who became spiritual father to the West (Aalders, 1992, p. 195).
The significance of Augustine, to Aalders, is that he typified the powers of this world spiritually; in doing so, he reached a negative judgement about the process of time, history (geschiedenis). The church’s task consists chiefly in her perennial alienation upon earth, and it is in this that she is the antithesis of worldly wealth (Aalders, 1977, p. 62, 63). According to Van der Zwaag, considering the approach that Aalders assumed in his trilogy on the Septuagint, Aalders remained positive in attitude toward Greek thinking to the end of his life. (Van der Zwaag, 2008, p. 179) Dr. A.P. Bos, mentioned above, raised strong objections to this, and saw, in the line of the Reformed (reformatorisch) philosophers Vollenhoven and Dooyeweerd, Greek thinking to be in conflict with the Biblical account of the createdness of the whole of reality. Greek thinking regarding the evil present in actuality, and deliverance therefrom, is in conflict with the Biblical notions of Fall and Redemption through the atoning suffering of Jesus Christ. (Mekkes, 1970, pp. 12-14)
We are held back here by the fact that the matter under discussion has not as yet run its course. It is significant that Dr G. van den Brink pays particular attention to the discrepancies between Greek and Judeo-Christian thinking. There are here a number of profound differences but also certain remarkable concurrences. He gives consideration in this regard to the conception of God, perception of history, understanding of humanity and social vision. What is relevant for our enquiry is what he has to say about the conception of history. In his estimation, something fundamentally new has occurred when we propound that God has, “in the fulness of time”, become man through the Incarnation. Matthew speaks of the genesis of Jesus Christ, a single occurrence regarded in the gospel as all-important for the restoration of relations between God, man and world. Luke, for his part, places his emphasis pre-eminently upon the historical interconnectedness of the salvific deeds, by revealing how salvific history proceeds first in Israel to the Incarnation, then finds an historical juncture in Crucifixion and Resurrection, finally to spread out extensively across the world beginning at Pentecost. Each of the salvific deeds in this progression count as just as many new and unique deeds of God. This proposition would be unthinkable in Greek philosophy, in which nothing at all can happen within time that is truly new, for all that happens is subsumed in the eternal divine procedure from the one to the many and back again. History is like a circle in which the same things keep recurring in the everlasting process of emanation. The Greek conception is deterministic: everything that happens, happens of necessity and has already been determined by the nature of things. At least, all things strive by their nature toward the goal that is, as it were, implanted within them. Much of the foregoing is also applicable in the course of human life. The Christian conception is lineal; the Greek, cyclical. It is the first model that we find, in a pronounced form, in Augustine. (Van den Brink, 2000, p. 84)
Since Dr. Aalders time and again enthusiastically reaches for Augustine — often by way of Groen van Prinsterer — we shall in this thesis examine how Aalders developed his historical vision, specifically in his Creation or History; how he imparts this vision to the Epistle to the Hebrews; and afterwards, how we may contrast him with Herman Dooyeweerd, a representative of Reformed (reformatorisch) philosophy. Both Aalders and Dooyeweerd are Christians who seek to let the Word of God speak with its full force in their life-ethic and worldview, yet they reach conclusions that are at variance with each other, as well as to a different evaluation of the Greek heritage. I find it intriguing to compare the views of these two Christian philosophers. The emphasis here will be on Aalders and this will be the kernel of this thesis. Dooyeweerd’s views will be deployed in order to challenge those of Aalders. Thus we come to voice the following stipulation:
An analysis of the historical vision of Dr W. Aalders, specifically in its effect upon his consideration of the Epistle to the Hebrews, contrasted with the historical vision of Dr H. Dooyeweerd
Having once generally taken account of the various positions held, we shall concentrate in Chapter 1 on Aalders’ historical vision. In Chapter 2, we shall analyze how Aalders takes Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews as the essential material for his vision; in Chapter 3, we shall challenge his vision with that of Dooyeweerd, as representing Reformed (Reformatorisch) philosophy. In the Conclusion, we shall come to summarize in review what we have found and to urge further research.

1.1 Biographical sketch
Willem Aalders, son of the Reformed minister Rev. J.C. Aalders (Stam, 2010, p. 23) , was born on 5th May 1909 in ’s Gravenmoer, spent the early part of his childhood in the Frisian town of Beetgum (Frisia later being described by him as a “precious land of precious folk”), and moved with his parents to the East Indies in 1918, where his father took up employment with the Dutch colony of Batavia. This marked the beginning of a rich and delectable period [for Aalders junior] that greatly impressed his life. On his first period of furlough, Aalders senior, for obscure reasons, decided to remain back in the Netherlands, where he became involved in the Geelkerken issue of 1926, joined the Restored Connexion of Reformed (Gereformeerd) Churches, and pastored their Amsterdam Central congregation.
Through his aunt Ida, Aalders junior encountered Kohlbrugge’s ministry and came to personal faith. He attended the Reformed (Gereformeerd) grammar school on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, after which he went up to Utrecht to read Theology. “This seemed to me the way in which I might grow in the Established Church (Hervormd),” he wrote. There, he came strongly to be influenced by Professor Maarten van Rijn (Stam, 2010, p. 24) , later to be his academic supervisor (promotor), who directed him toward Pascal and Luther. After graduating, he served a year and a half as pastor of Wijk aan Zee, and in 1941 brought out his thesis on Pascal as apologeticist preacher. Thereupon he moved to the pastorate in Frisia: first in Oosterzee and then in Koudum. He became deeply attached to the Koudum, a confessional parish. “I do know,” he wrote, “that the leaving of Koudum affected me so much that I found myself sitting and weeping in the pulpit during my farewell address.” He left for Groningen in 1941, where Jews were often sheltered. Several offers made to him during this period — such as a lectureship in The Church and the World at Driebergen; a professorship in Missiology at Oegstgeest; and a professorship at the Free University of Amsterdam — were turned down, until eventually Aalders warmed to a call to minister to the Maranatha parish in The Hague.
There, he became an isolated figure, as he himself says, due to Barthian theology and the social-gospel outworkings of the theological thinking current in the churches. From 1967 to 1975, he was Lecturer in Protestant Theology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, which he accepted having been advised that he had no chance of being academically appointed anywhere else due to his anti-Barthian position. At Nijmegen, he lectured on Luther and Kierkegaard with an emphasis on the avoidance of the collectivisation, sociologising and socialising of the gospel. In the years that followed, he was involved with An Open Letter (1967), The Witness (1971) and A Reformed (Hervormd) Plea (1994). His wife, Sara Geertruida Huender, died in 1999. The abolition of the Established (Hervormd) Church in 2004 was for him a deed with which he could not be reconciled on principle. “The Protestant Church in the Netherlands, cut loose from history, is no church at all as far as he is concerned,” wrote L.J. Geluk. These latter two events left him a very lonely figure. Willem Aalders died in 2005 and was buried on 30th December of that year at Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery in The Hague.
1.2 Basis of his historical conception
Aalders nowhere, to my knowledge, sets out systematically his own conception of history, although we do find in nearly all his works some explicit thoughts concerning his view of history. In one of his essays, Aalders mentions illustrations stemming from “historic moments in [his] life”. He takes this to mean the kind of moments in which one grasps what truly is historical; living history. He confesses to having enjoyed such moments in his own life. “I myself have had such an experience. It occurred at the Manse in the village of Koudum in the south-western corner of Frisia in the heady days of [the invasion in] May 1940. First, the waking up on the morning of 10th May and the sensing that something was afoot. Then, the very next day, the rolling past of German tanks, troop carriers and cavalry. That tense Whitsuntide. The flight of the Queen. The bombardment of Rotterdam. The capitulation. Now, this was an historic experience: the end of an age.” (Transparant, 1992, p. 3)
In nature, we can be overtaken by the grip of panic. Psalm 91:6 — “for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; for the destruction that wasteth at noonday” — would appear to refer to this terror. The Greeks, too, knew of this. We seem to have become estranged from this experience, but those things that are still able to overcome us with the grip of panic constitute, for Aalders, history. He ventures to propose that one cannot really write history or be a true historian unless he recognizes the experience of historical fear, the terror of Clio.” (Transparant, 1992, p. 3) In order to conquer the fear of history that he had felt, he turned to Luther’s De servo arbitrio, where Luther tackles, among other subjects, the case of a person subjected to superhuman powers. Aalders calls Luther the guide for such a time as ours, in which we “shall be ever longer, and all the more, exposed to the might of historical forces.” He refers to Groen van Prinsterer, who likewise acknowledged “the historical terror”. It is him that Aalders is echoing in his essay when he writes, “What affected me most deeply in the sentences of the Preface was the words, ‘History, which also is the flaming scripture of a holy God’.” That the prophets of Israel, the nebiim, knew of this, witness, inter alia, Isaiah 10:28-34; the Greeks, such as Herodotos in his Historia, also grasped this, according to Aalders, and treat of the supernatural factor in history. He regards the Hellene historians, “in their epic-dramatic portrayal of the past”, as parallel figures with the Israelite nebiim, since history is for them no drama in the sense of mere human dealings, but rather something in which higher powers are involved.” (Transparant, 1992, p. 4)
This idea — “history as the flaming scripture of a holy God” — is one that Aalders fails to detect in many historians. In regarding “history as God’s speech”, Groen places himself “outside the guild of learned inquirers into the past”. It is in this tradition that Aalders places himself when he cites the Scriptural witness of Daniel 5, where the words menè, menè, tekel, upharsin having appeared on the wall are understood by the one to whom they are addressed: Daniel understands God’s speech in history and prophesies the fall of Babylon. Aalders seems to have this in mind as he writes:
Yet what an absurd prophecy this must have been: that the apogee of barbarian might and presumption could ever totter and fall! Yet it did happen a short while later: not from without but from within. Just like the collapse of the mighty Soviet empire and the fall of the Berlin Wall. How was it possible? How could Daniel have dared to prophesy it? The Bible gives its own answer to this question. It is to be found in Genesis 11, the history of the confusion of tongues at Babel. Now, in our own time, we have found out what that confusion of tongues was: it was a breach made in a [previously] sound worldview, an unmasking of the lies of an idolatry, mythology, ideology. That factor whereby the people within a closed system of forced uniform belief had been bound together, as it were in a termite colony, at once lost its soundness and creditability. There was no longer any unity, any commonality, any direction, any authority. An angel, as a celestial engraver, had inscribed with the cuneiform of men, Menè, menè, tekel, upharsin. The lying powers were defied. The prophet from Israel had declared; there was none to gainsay him. (Transparant, 1992, p. 6)
It is characteristic of a prophet that he makes pronouncement in the same manner in which he speaks and deals with God: face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. The prophet thus approaches the mystery of history as one who deals with the Lord God on a trusted footing and who has been let in to God’s salvific secrets. Thus, the prophet Amos may say, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (3:7). Thus they have been the declarers of history as “the flaming scripture of a holy God”. They are acquainted with the language of history. They decipher the obscure characters of the angel, that celestial engraver. They have time and again been the men for Israel’s comfort and encouragement in irredeemable, desperate situations.” (Is. 40:27,28) The hard and bitter language of history is sometimes linked with suffering (I Ki. 22; Jer. 15:15). Daniel springs to mind in this regard: through an outstanding education and life of prayer, his horizon is expanded and he becomes intimately bound up with the world’s issues; history is for him the flourishings and misfortunes of Israel among the heathen nations. In his visionary glare, world history appears as an ever more hotly contested struggle between the God of Israel and the heathen idols, and time and eternity are drawn into the contest. History becomes an eschatalogical entity stretching out into eternity, with an end-times character.

Tracing this line, we see the Son of Man come forth (Daniel 7), causing division in Jewry. The all-encompassing aspect of history enfolds everything within itself and points toward the day of the second coming. In the gospel, this is reconfirmed in the great commission and the commandment to baptize. Following Groen, Aalders is of the conviction that the Christian historian is tasked with teasing out, from amid the mishmash of historical events and doings, a Godly strain: the flaming scripture. History is a divine tapestry stretching out to eternity, and as such is possessed of an eschatological character. (Transparant, 1992, p. 10.) Thus, Aalders’ conclusion of the matter in his final work is this:
So it is apparent from Groen’s writings that the Christian, with his Scripture-trained eye and being steeped in the historical vision of the prophets and the gospel, is equipped to apply to the here and now even the flaming speech of God and the sunbeams of His perfection. And I am convinced that this is the task for the church today, in light of the creeping secularisation that now threatens her. It would lend the church a prophetic halo; it would signify a call to arms in an apocalyptic age. Yet this can come about only through one virtue: CONFITEOR — I CONFESS. Or, to put it in the wording of the nineteenth-century revival: Dare to be a Daniel, dare to stand alone... (D. Sankey). (Aalders, 2004, p. 39)
1.3 History defined
He who holds to the Gospel evaluates his own times and the aspirations of the age, and takes history seriously, since the Cross is the crux of world history and since Christianity is by its very nature historical. Time, history and Gospel are inextricably linked. One can embrace the Gospel only by understanding one’s own times; this is grasped once one is grounded in history; which, in turn, is achieved only by coming to believe the Gospel. The Gospel is the soul of history. History and Revelation are umbilically connected. (Aalders, 1977, p. 45)
Aalders, following Groen van Prinsterer, distinguishes between History (Historie) and events (geschiedenis, the everyday Dutch word for ‘history’). Not all that happens becomes History (Historie) . Christanity, inasmuch as it bears witness with divine revelation, is historical. History (Historie) revolves around great times, holy times, times of revelation: times with the worth of eternity. This sense of History is, for Aalders, God’s condescension into time, negating all time besides the present and imparting an eternal significance to the ephemeral. This Historie always has to do with God’s words and deeds, which have occurred once for all time: events that bear the hallmark of truth and thus can never elapse into a past, but endure as an ongoing Today. Whenever the Ancient of Days, Who bears the name of the absolute “I Am”, steps into the scene of time, then that moment assumes the character of an everlasting Today that never expires. Faith lives upon God’s condescension into time; upon the eternal Today of grace. There is in the present day and in living history (geschiedenis) the expectation of a future, but only within Historie. (Visser, 1994, p. 23).
In history (geschiedenis) there is much that is anti-Christian, which testifies not in accordance with Revelation (Aalders, 1977, p. 49). Without this rootedness in Revelation, time and history are left as a vacuous and meaningless power struggle. History (geschiedenis) is what happens when one experiences time and respects it as a realm of compelling, inexhaustible possibility and potentiality. This is why Aalders calls history an empty term, even when there is mention of development, resolution, renewal, progress and liberation. Because history (geschiedenis) knows nothing of the revelation of the living, it is devoid of any truth or value (Visser, 1994, p. 23). Revelation lends unity, consistency and texture to history (geschiedenis). Modernism lacks this and sacrifices [the nobler concept of] History (Historie) in favour of the future, as it manifests itself through secularism, referred to [in German] as “thinking historically” (geschichtlich denken) — a thinking that entirely consists in depicting the flow of events (geschiedenis), of reality — [in effect, a] futurology, pragmatism and hermeneutics. (Aalders, 1977, p. 54).
Aalders considers that “if history (geschiedenis) persuades us of anything, then it is this, that the most remarkable phenomenon is not disjointedness but continuity” (Aalders, 1984, p. 13). Theology has bound up the Gospel too tightly with concrete earthly historical reality, which is a “secularization of faith”, for which modern scientific humanistic thinking takes the blame, which derives its life from the great discovery of history (geschiedenis), of the historical character of reality, of history-as-process, as progress, as development. Thus historical evolutionism entered theology (Aalders, 1969, p. 5). Herein, salvation and history, church and world become so inextricably linked that a breach occurs with the Gospel, “the flaming scripture”.
To gain a better vantage over history (geschiedenis) as a struggle of opposing reference-points, Aalders sets about time and the tools of time, availing himself of the church father Augustine, who in (inter alia) his City of God explicitly tackles the machinamenta temporalia, spiritual realities with their overwhelmingly merciless powers which find their expression in the process of historification. History is made, for Augustine, the graveyard of peoples, empires and cultures. As such, his judgement of history (geschiedenis) is a negative one: “History [is seen] as an all-inundating sea, void of any sense or purpose, because the civitas terrena [earthly civilization] has concentrated upon the future within the meaning of time.” The peace — the salvation — that it seeks is “an earthly peace, one consisting of the goods and fruits of temporal existence” (Aalders, 1977, p. 57).
Besides this, Aalders forges a direct and positive correlation between the civitas Dei and history (geschiedenis). There are tempora christiana — times of God’s providence — that constitute unfolding, a ripening, a gradual fulfilment in the eternal Sabbath. This is, for Aalders, the same concept as what Groen understands by “historical Christianity” (Aalders, 1977, p. 65). That Aalders sees himself in this line is obvious from his remark, “All who come against Groen’s historical perspective with their strict and often haughty criticism must grasp well that in so doing, they are condemning and excising one of the richest, most precious and profoundest seams of Biblical tradition in the Christian church” (Aalders, 1977, p. 65).
Modernism has sought to render the Church into history, but since Bible and Church are par excellence a matter of grand narrative (Historie) — matters of tempora christiana, of eternal worth — they remain a lasting Today that will never become the past and thus cannot ever be consigned to history (geschiedenis). For this, Aalders cites Heb. 4:7-11, Deut. 4, Psalm 136 and Luke 1 (Aalders, 1977, p. 66) as well as referring to the word efhapax, “once for all time”, as a reinforcement of the absolute and eternal nature of Revelation and History (Historie) as opposed to a continual passage of time. In this line, Aalders sees the Church, Christendom and to a certain extent Europe, above all the Netherlands, as historical realities (Aalders, 1977, p. 68) History (Historie) is the Today of heavenly Creation reality, the everlasting Today of Christ. Against this Today of history (Historie) is set the passage of history (geschiedenis) as “fruit of His creational justice, revealed in the Today of grace” (Visser, 94, p. 24).
Periods of Reformation and Reawakening (Réveil) are, then, also reinvigorations of the historical grasp, and graftings into the tempora christiana: they are excursions of history (geschiedenis) into the grand Narrative (Historie). Quite the reverse is the case in revolutions, which are all about cutting loose from the narrative of History. An exit route from this represents a deliverance from the machinamenta temporalia, the tools of Time. History (Historie) alone brings deliverance from the destructive tide of Time and history (geschiedenis) that washes away (Aalders, 1977, p. 69).
Closely bound up with this is the notion of the Droit divin or divine right — “meant as a grasp of the highest law, God’s disposition towards human self-conceitedness” — which means that all right, truth and legitimacy are from God and rest upon Revelation, which transforms historiographical (geschiedkundige) greatnesses into Historical greatnesses and which preserves social dispensations from being destroyed in the vacuous and meaningless progress of time. This is the point at which History (Historie) and modernism clash most of all (Aalders, 1977, p. 73).
Revolution denies this Droit divin and thus dispenses with Narrative (Historie) in favour of history (geschiedenis), because she derives her inspiration from the casting-off of the past in favour of an illusory future, lives out of a blind faith in the historical process (geschiedenis), and is anti-Historical (Historie). (Aalders, 1977, p. 76). This Droit divin is Historical (Historie) and maintains its validity; it points to an eternal divine source beyond time and as such is not subjected to the progress of time; it is the Unalterable, undestroyable, and thus a common foundation and origin binding together all times, all peoples, all races, all generations, the root beyond time of all life and the enduring propensity of all humanity, a Creation righteousness. (Aalders, 1977, pp. 76, 278)
The coming into being of the modern industrial proletariat would appear to have cut European man loose from this Creation righteousness. The historical approach to this law is, for us, exclusively Holy Scripture, where Creation righteousness and Revelation, Tradition and History (Historie) flow together, where standards and values flow together as one. Thus Scripture becomes an immutable canon of true humanity, of the givens of all existence. (Aalders, 1977, p. 80)
1.4 History discerned
The key question that urges itself is how this Gospel can be maintained by the Christian community in the unfolding of history. According to Aalders, there is no Biblical epistle in this regard that enjoys such an egregious significance and such an unique importance as the Epistle to the Hebrews (Aalders, 1969, pp. 9,10). Denying this could be fatal to us, for “the Epistle to the Hebrews was written on the pretext of the first storm in the springtime and honeymoon of the first New Testament congregation; all subsequent storms have come from the same direction.”
History knows its critical moments in which a “word of affirmation” (logos tēs paraklēseos) does not go amiss: junctures at which the Apostolic faith and thus the very existence of the Christian community is under threat. Time and events therein cannot affect that faith, for it is to its core an eternal Word, untouchable and immovable: world and history (geschiedenis) cannot comprehend it, for it is of a different nature altogether. The community must stay on its feet as it is shaken by the transition from the expectation of salvation not grounded in a grasp of time and history into the hard and upsetting reality of a time that is lasting and a history that goes on; it must become involved with mutable and perishable matters. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 12,13)
Since then time does in fact go on, ought history not to be taken seriously? World and history are in Aalders’ opinion a moribund process, and barely recognizable as appertaining to a world created by God: the cosmos has become chaos, the fixed has become moveable, subjected to the Time that perverts it from its divine origin, which is not a forward but a backward movement. History (geschiedenis) is de-Creation and makes the order, beauty and nobility in the cosmos things of the past. History is a process with no future. History is eternity in freefall. (Aalders, 1969, p. 34)
Besides, the world is also the realm of angelic rule, those mediators of God’s Revelation, as interpreters of the original cosmic order, the divine Creation law. Their lore is outside history: they remember the primal that preceded time and history. Angelic powers exert influence over the world, time and history (Aalders, 1969, p. 35). They communicate through myth, which speaks of the primal and the first beginnings. The myth-consciousness stirred up by angelic revelation seeks to revisit the first estate of all things. It seeks an exit route from history. It longs to do away with the process of history-as-alienation. It lives in pining for Creation and knows that only victory and deliverance from time, being the process of dying, opens the way thither (Aalders, 1969, p. 36).
The people of Israel, too, experiences angelic revelation through Michael, for Israel did not take a static and reactionary stance in history, being the people of history, future and hope. How else could there have been an exodus from Egypt under Moses? Egypt is a land which emphatically draws its life from the static power of cosmic mythology, and in its fixation with Creation, exemplifies an angelic reign that introduced an anti-historical orientation into the nation. Israel is the only nation to have discovered the nature of time, temporal events, history. Israel came not only to discern history as a breach in Creation, but equally perceived history as the Fall.
For Israel, Creation is fulfilled in the Sabbath that gives definition to Creation: the Sabbath is a fulfilled Today, the cosmos at rest, steadfast and secure, immutable, immovable in the cycles of set times, and without history (Aalders, 1969, p. 38). In Israel, myth finds its voice in Narrative (historie), the cosmic Sabbath in history (geschiedenis), whose ultimate beginning is of God and of human history. Thus the Sabbath is sacred, yet time profane. History is to die the death; alienation from the divine origin. (Aalders, 1969, p. 39)
The Feast of Tabernacles commemorates a liberation from time and from history. Michael nurtures Israel’s memories of the primal past, just as his fellow angels do for other nations. Israel is therefore a very anti-historical (geschiedenis) people, taking a principled and radical stand against history, for Israel knows of a Creation that is everlasting and perfect, and knows time as an estrangement from Creation and thus as sin and death (Aalders, 1969, p. 40).
In the word teschuva (repentance, turning-back), the burning longing that Israel experiences to return to the original status is reflected as a key concept: the burning desire to turning the Exodus into a complete exodus out of time and history by radical conversion and repentance, by which means the process of Narrative (Historie) is realigned to the sacred Sabbath of old (Aalders, 1969, p. 41). Although all nations know something of this (Rom. 2:15), Israel is the only people to have recognized history (geschiedenis) as something accursed, a judgement and condemnation for which man alone is accountable and from which only a teschuva can deliver him. The tragedy [of this plight] can be heard in the prophets and John the Baptist (Aalders, 1969, p. 42).
What angels cannot do, Jesus can: in His suffering, death and resurrection in History (historie), He by an historical achievement frustrates and conquers him who has power over events (geschiedenis); He brings to a halt the course of time, to rest in a new Sabbath, such that man might live in the light of a revelation other than that of the angels (Aalders, 1969, p. 44). This is a light that is an untouchable, indestructible Today of God’s personal presence, divinely renewing creature and creation. Many Old Testament figures looked forward to a restoration of the first estate of the cosmos, but have not seen it [fulfilled].
The revelation of Christ is thus more than a restored first estate of Creation. In order to underline this properly, the word katapausis is deployed. In the Son, the cosmic Sabbath is made a katapausis, is made peace, as the reign of angels is transmogrified into the rule of the Son. Angels were not able to hold the devil back, but the Son makes all things new (Aalders, 1969, pp. 46,47).
The doom of time and events in time have no more effect upon faith in the apostolic era: Jesus has overcome death as well as history-as-dying, and His resurrection and second coming — and that quickly — are inseparably connected, so that the issue of history (geschiedenis) dissipates. Yet at the same time, the understanding is arrived at that time, world-age (wereldtijd) and history (geschiedenis) are nevertheless seen to exist between resurrection and parousia. This causes great uncertainty for the apostolic community (Aalders, 1969, p. 48). The congregation undergoes a confusion and loss of her joy, assurance and expectation.
The Christians of the apostolic era yet stand, for they have seen Jesus’ honour and majesty above time and beyond history. Thus, they arrive at a disturbing dilemma: leave off the faith of Jesus, or quit historical reality. The former would lead to a thoroughgoing nihilism, while the latter is an impossibility. In this situation, the Epistle to the Hebrews becomes for Aalders a conquistador (Aalders, 1969, p. 48), showing the congregation the way for as long as time shall last.
1.5 Forms of revelation
The word ‘hope’, moreover, in the Epistle, is invested in the extension of the promise to Abraham and Israel, and as such is not connected with an historic expectation of salvation, history (geschiedenis) or time. This hope is in the Old Testament strongly linked with the law, which brings about the belief that “God is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him”; the law gives hope of “a better resurrection”. It is also to be borne in mind that this law was mediated through an angel. Angels keep fresh in our mind the source of Creation, and the law stirs up a yearning to return to that condition. (Aalders, 1969, p. 53)
What the law does for Israel, myths (Aalders, 1969, p. 173) do for other peoples, for law and myth are closely related. The authentic myth is a religious understanding that has to do with God and man, heaven and earth, eternity and time. It is not worked out, poeticized or composed, but derives from a supernatural source (Aalders, 1969, p. 54). Myth reveals the archai, the beginnings from which all things come to rest in their being; it is the source of divine revelation, truth and thus law (Aalders, 1969, p. 55). Myth recalls to man’s mind the divine source of all things and thus stirs man up to look beyond the visible, uncertain and perishable to the realm of sacred, eternal, immutable Being. We may say with Virgil, Restitutio in integrum: a return to the sacred source (Aalders, 1969, p. 56).
The Hebrews’ hope concerns a hope of a Creation that is everlasting, holy, entirely valid (geldend) and of a normative character (Aalders, 1969, p. 57). Nevertheless, law is not identical with myth. Myth comes through angels; law — referred to in the Epistle to the Hebrews as “the voice of words” — comes in the form of a recapitulation to Israel of the words of creation (Aalders, 1969, p. 58). That is why this message — all the more strongly, directly, immediately, urgently than in myth — consists in “the voice of words”. The hope of the law — just as that of myth — therefore does not stand in relation to history (geschiedenis) but is anti-historically and vertically inclined. Believers step beyond linear time, time-as-dying, and are turned toward the Unseen. Their expectation is therefore radically vertical and has no part in time or events in time — even standing antithetically in opposition to earthly time — being a return to Sabbath, Creation. (Aalders, 1969, p. 80)
A highly relevant question is what the outworking of the law is in the soul of the people of Israel. The ambivalence of Revelation is penetrated by the exemplary faith of Moses, who by means of this [faith] in substitutionary fashion makes the people a covenant folk, and through the service of tabernacle and sacrifice, which exemplify the law, teaches the people faith as the certainty of things hoped for [Heb. 11:1]. The heart of the matter is that in sacrifices, one hands his [own] blood, soul and life back to God. It thus becomes an olah, a giving-up, a gift offered up to God (Aalders, 1969, p. 64). So Israel comes to stand antithetically against history (geschiedenis) by having serious dealings with the Other Side. Belief and hope is thus a movement within time that is of an entirely different order, neither regressive nor progressive, reactionary nor revolutionary. It is a movement that cannot be captured within historical models of thought, for it falls outside historical categories; and so it is that for believers, the old covenant becomes a hope and a dying to the world of events (geschiedenis). Standing in the grace of legal revelation means dying to time and events in time, and instead drawing near to the heavenly home country. It is to make life a [sacrifice of] ascending smoke [Eph. 5:2]. (Aalders, 1969, p. 66)
Myth and law are what all religions have their origin in, and religion is the discovery and recognition of a dual reality: an eternal and a passing; an immovable and an unstable; a heavenly and an earthly. Religion is revelation, Speech; it imparts reality and justice as heavenly realities. Angels announce in myth and law that heaven and angels, sabbath and paradise, creation and cosmos have remained outwith the destructive [remit] of the Fall, time and history (geschiedenis) in untouchable soundness in the status quo ante. Myth and law bring connectedness with the eternal divine Hereabove (Aalders, 1969, p. 68). The perspective of New Testament believers has attained full sight of this. They have with the eye of faith discovered the truth of Creation! The final fulfilment is the particular applicability of the gospel to the heavenly Creation reality. (Aalders, 1969, p. 70)
The greater the gulf that opens up between resurrection and second coming, then, the more clouded the prospect. Parousia postponed undermines the Resurrection joy of the post-apostolic community and thus faith itself. The chief matter of instruction in the Epistle is that the revealing of the Son stands in a special relation to Creation. The Epistle clarifies that man once again has gained bold approach to the sacred Hereabove, to the sabbath, to paradise, to the Tree of Life, and that Jesus is our eternal High Priest in heavenly holiness, far surpassing the fact that He is coming soon to be Judge of the world. (Aalders, 1969, p. 73).
It is to this fully-fledged hope that the writer to the Hebrews steers the readers by not regarding time and history as decisive: the congregation is disconnected from the second coming itself, because they have already long been disconnected from time and events in time and live in the things that are Above. Thus Christ has already set the congregation free from the historical earthly expectation of return and points them heavenwards. Only then can they survive the pressure of world and history (geschiedenis). They are obliged to incline themselves to the fixed and immovable realities that stand beyond events in time; they must make the transition from linear, historical, horizontal expectation to the vertical inclination toward the things that are Above. For this, a metanoia, a turnaround in consciousness, is called for.
So it is that Aalders arrives at “regarding historical-mindedness as a thinking estranged from God, because it is sprung from original sin, from pride, from the vanity of making oneself a god and creator. Historical-mindedness is an emancipation of the consciousness toward God and His work of creation; it is a departure from the divine sabbath.” (Aalders, 1969, p. 78)
The metanoia referred to is a purification of consciousness-gone-awry and occurs by sprinkling with Jesus’ blood, by revelation of the light that has an exorcistic effect. The Son can do what angels could not: condescending into time and events (geschiedenis) (Aalders, 1969, p. 82). Thus the gospel becomes history (geschiedenis). The Son, as radiance of God’s glory, gives Light of a higher order. His shedding of blood is an intentional deed within time and history. In this deed, God kills the dying nature of earthly life (Aalders, 1969, p. 87). It is for him a fulfilled Pascha, the most radical bursting out of the slavery of sinful events in time and a return to the sacred actuality of Creator and creation. It is the katapausis of history’s sinful rebellion. The historical event of the Son’s sacrifice has overcome and done away with the first man’s robbery. Time, history and death are dealt their death-blow in His death. (Aalders, 1969, p. 88)
1.6 The work of the Son
The original Creation is the work of the Son, and therefore this reality forms part of the divine Being and has the character of eternity. The way to Creation reality, moreover, has been opened by the Son. He lives in anabasis, the original Creation’s ascent to glory. In so doing, He brings the faithful with Him, so that they no longer live in time and events (geschiedenis) but in the things that are Above. What goes on here is for [the ecclesia] of much greater import than what happens on the linear horizontal plain of time. Insofar as she still preserves a time-consciousness, it is a purely apocalyptic time-consciousness. (Aalders, 1969, p. 93)
This Creation, equally, is different, for it no longer bears in itself the potential for changeability, of ageing, or dying; and so the angels appear to be workers preparing the way of One more glorious than themselves, for the Son is made Heir of all — immutable — things. (Aalders, 1969, p. 94)
In order to experience this, a metanoia is (as has been remarked) needed, a spiritual reorientation, a resetting of consciousness from the vain representations of historical-mindedness, which are draining, frustrating, moribund, to the entirely new models of thinking of the living, eternally imperishable, heavenly actuality. Through preaching, one is inducted into this way of thinking and talking, because language and consciousness have everything to do with each other: one learns the parrhēsia — speaking freely — through faith, and this is referred to as nothing less than “the birth anōthen”, from above (Aalders, 1969, p. 98), whereby man, radically changed, takes up the speech of another language, the language sprouting from revelation. (Aalders, 1969, p. 99).
To be affected by myth is to be affected by a revelation of words. Myth recalls to mind the first estate of Creation and bears the hallmarks of the original and fundamental, as opposed to the paucity of Today; it is the opposite value to progression, to historical activity, to cultural modernity; it is even regressive, hesitant, conservative (Aalders, 1969, p. 101). Mythical language is never historical but vertical, static, and seeks to reveal the nature of things. Thus, its language is the means of indication by which things appear and the nature of Creation light breaks through: it communicates earthly reality such that the [true] Being once again appears therein. Mythic man experiences the world and himself as alienation, uprooting, loss. (Aalders, 1969, p. 102)
The “voice of words” in the law is intoned in bidding mode, as proclamation, as command, set down in the Torah, Israel’s mother tongue, in which she appertains to God the Creator. Passion rings through this voice, for it is a struggle against the leaden-heavy stirring that we call history (geschiedenis) (Aalders, 1969, p. 104). Sinful events in time are spoken against in the law, for for it calls the origin of Creation to mind. This, then, is the divine miracle of Scripture: that it can never elapse into the past, and cannot be inflicted with the silence of [becoming] an historical artefact, for it is the “voice of words”. It is the language in which the melancholy of mythic language is drowned out by the dawning of guilt and judgement. For, after all, it is sin that is the source of the opposition between Creation and events (geschiedenis). (Aalders, 1969, p. 105)
The anti-historical character of the legal framework likewise becomes apparent, for Aalders, from the fact that the Hebrew possesses only an “omnitemporal Imperfect”, an incomplete past aspect that is applied in all verbal tenses. The result of this is that [when] man’s time is expressed in the Old Testament, Now and Future are inseparable from Past; the past is extant and determines today and the future. The Torah brings man to turn his back to the future and causes him to face the source and sacred beginning of all things. History (geschiedenis) is a backward movement. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 106, 107)
It is no different — and in a manner that myth and law have not known — with the language of the Spirit in the Gospel, creating a peculiar vocabulary as an outworking of metanoia. Aalders sees the climax of this in the Epistle to the Hebrews. This new language also has different things to say about Creation reality, since we are now standing under the Son and as such are freed from slavish fear and dumbness in the face of the cosmic archōn-powers. Since God created everything and has finished His work, there remains no time, no history (geschiedenis), but only the eternal Sabbath. In contrast to this, the world is the insecure, ephemeral, unreliable, formless, disordered, in which space is marred by events (geschiedenis). Creation reality is as the sacred Above, which neither becomes, passes nor ages: it is an imperishable Today (Aalders, 1969, p. 113). Through the Son, access Above has been opened up; one gains a portion in the unshakeable Kingdom (Heb. 12:22-24). Thus human consciousness slips loose from time and history (geschiedenis). The solid food and more fully-formed perfection [offered] are needed in order to stand firm in the ravages of time. (Aalders, 1969, pp. 114, 115)
By the blood of Christ, a man is set free from the curse of time; he is no longer inclined toward the illusory future of horizontal events in time, but rather toward an ahistorical, heavenly Creation sabbath, toward the things that are above (Aalders, 1969, p. 116). Liberated by Jesus’ blood, one is no longer a captive of time, tied down to history, but a Hebrew embarking upon the pilgrimage and homecoming to the Promised Land of the Creation sabbath. (Aalders, 1969, p. 117)
So it is that the second coming is merely an outworking of the incarnation, in which Christ overcomes time and world and the believer is liberated in principle from history and its power, coming instead to anticipate the Above of sacred creation. This anticipatory glance is dependent not upon the forward flow of time, but upon Looking Upwards (Aalders, 1969, p. 118). The path of vertical motion is described as an agōn, a progression, a pathway, a movement heavenwards. Agōn is also rendered ‘strife, nervous effort, wrestling against gainsayers’. The burden and sin that claw believers back are those revelations of historical power, death and the devil. (Aalders, 1969, p. 119).
To stand within events (geschiedenis) is to be encumbered with the quest for a mirage that keeps reappearing on the horizon of time in ever new shapes and shades. This [inclination] is ingrained in man’s thinking and will (Aalders, 1969, p. 120). Time has been made a source of existence and keeps man from embarking upon the vertical way, which for him is an agony, an experience of dying (Aalders, 1969, p. 121). The man of the vertical way is taken up with a different movement: a movement that is traced back to the Son, by the Spirit of the Father, and that returns to the Father. In the clash between horizontal progression and vertical regression, it dawns [upon us] that history (geschiedenis) — the march of man overreaching himself, seeking to be as God — is in its very roots a deicide. It will not and cannot accept being reminded that its time, and thereby its liberty, are vain illusions devoid of a future and staring death in the face even as it lives. Historical-mindedness is ultimo ratio, a base value, that [this mindset] cannot and will not honour. Linear future is the final barricade behind which it opposes itself against all that is redolent of Above. (Aalders, 1969, p. 123).
1.7 The struggle of faith
All this is coupled with strife within and without (Aalders, 1969, p. 123). Whoever is vertically-inclined is continually beset, for he goes against the flow of the general movement of the masses. Faith appertains to the heavenly actuality and is in and of itself already a part of that actuality (Aalders, 1969, pp. 126, 127). Aalders sees in this the reason why it is a given that the faith of believers is already the actual substance, the essence, of heavenly things. They, as believers, already partake of these things by their faith. This is how faith is the proof of a reality not yet beheld. The struggle against the world, against earthly time, against historical forces, against events (geschiedenis), is the earthly actualization of the hypostasis, the heavenly ownership of faith, and a proof of the genuineness of faith. (Aalders, 1969, p. 127).
We are bound to refer positively to this struggle, for it is an active concern with the process of death, the means of birth into eternity and a dying-off to history, which is intensified by Jesus’ death and resurrection (Aalders, 1969, p. 128). Through training, paideia, the believer undergoes the process of dying to time and events (geschiedenis) and is led to the glory of the unshakeable Kingdom, to become what he was before events (geschiedenis), although in an incomparably more glorious manner in the Son. This is called by Luther the transitus that becomes a fide transferri ab eo: a being translated by faith in Jesus out of the Egypt of the world into the fulfilment of the promise. (Aalders, 1969, p. 131)
Besides the vertical pathway of faith as agōn, there is also a life in the freedom of the glory of the children of God. This heavenly actuality — oikoumenē — is already here, and the second coming is but a laying-open of this glory. Events (geschiedenis), therefore, do not culminate in the oikoumenē either, for they are merely an illustration of alienation from God and are a process of dying: it is not earthly historical man, but man set loose from history (geschiedenis), who attains this heavenly worth (Aalders, 1969, pp. 135-137). The ecclesia, assuming the temporary form of the heavenly oikoumene as an earnest (arrabōn), is a pledge of what Christ gives, displaying on earth something of this glory by being God’s house, focused upon the altar. In the ecclesia, God is building His house up to perfect fulness of salvation. (Aalders, 1969, p. 142).
The purpose of the Epistle to the Hebrews is therefore to resist flagging — occasioned by returning again to the earth and events (geschiedenis) as the parousia delays — by calling the congregation to the vertical pathway. She must not allow herself to be deprived of assurance of salvation by disregarding grace, which has brought forth a fruitful feeder bed in which weeds could flourish out of hand (Aalders, 1969, p. 145). This is the doctrine that proceeds from the actuality of the world’s existence and from the progression of events (geschiedenis), which on this basis is ploughing a course that deviates from, if not breaks altogether with, the indispensable and thus needful [reality of] authentic apostolic preaching.
A deviation from faith in this direction would historicalize the Gospel and turn it into a superficial hope of events in time and within the scene of world events (geschiedenis), thus historicalizing revelation. Should this happen, then, according to Aalders, Jesus would be transformed into a worldly principle, an earthly messiah (Aalders, 1969, pp. 145, 146). Yet salvation may never but never be made worldly: observances made after this manner are observances having to do with fallen powers of creation, and symbols are made into battle-cries of Christians attempting to renew the world. (Aalders, 1969, p. 152)
Working from the Epistle to the Hebrews, Aalders detects world empires and cultures, referred to by the name Esau/Edom, persecuting and suppressing the just and devout: these entities seem no longer to be acting at the instigation of an angel; any grasp of the first estate is dead in them, and they live in the immediacy of the things that are visible, earthly. Their sponsor is Satan, that man of lawlessness, who eschews holy things, who is anarchic and nihilist from the beginning. Since Scripture speaks apocalyptically, it foresees abysses and [encroachments of] darkness while we are still calling “peace and safety” (Aalders, 1969, p. 156). Thus, whoever commits the sin of Esau, backsliding from heavenly to earthly things, from the eternal to the temporal, from the spiritual to the material, has committed a deed for which no space remains for repentance to enter, because there is no Christ for the earth, for history, for events in time. (Aalders, 1969, p. 157).
Now, then, the Last Times are upon us, for the mythic and legal eras is past, having lost their power and content because they have no more revelatory content. The katechōn, the withholding power of the mythic and legal, is removed, for with the Son’s advent, the angels’ task is complete and they remain merely ministering spirits (Aalders, 1969, p. 159). Since that time, Satan has been doing his very best to conquer the world, and egging on history to its end; he becomes prince of this world, the apocalypse bursts forth, and the out-and-out confrontation is staged. The ecclesia stands for the choice between earthly reality and the heavenly oikumenē (Aalders, 1969, p. 160). Eucharist puts the congregation on notice to be the exodus-folk who leave world, time and events (geschiedenis) behind them and move spiritually into exodus. Adherents of the doctrine of meats flee this dilemma by sticking fast to the earth and pulling Christ down to earth. (Aalders, 1969, p. 161)
The ecclesia is confronted by the dilemma that Christ is the One Who is come into time, the world, history (geschiedenis) in order to overcome the earthly-historical, being a sinful actuality that cannot stand before God, and to open access to the heavenly holies by His sin-offering. Do we approach Him in the apocalyptic of world and events (geschiedenis), or do we exclude the apocalyptic and opt for an historically-adjusted Christ made worldly? (Aalders, 1969, p. 162)
The prolongation of time is the lasting skandalon stopping the ecclesia from placing her expectation upon time, in the world, in events (geschiedenis). The New Testament knows yet another form of earthly, historical, linear alienation from grace: the chiliasmus that identifies Christ’s return as being one and the same with the Messiah of Israel, with the thousand-year reign, with Jesus’ kingship over Israel and the world. Christ has made an end of the existence of history (geschiedenis) and there is therefore no expectation at all to be found in history (Aalders, 1969, p. 166). The more authentic the congregation, the more securely she shall stand in grace; the more obedient she remains at critical historical (geschiedenis) moments, the greater her sway and influence in the world (Aalders, 1969, p. 168). However, her vertical inclination does present her with alienation from the world, whereby her calling to live an existence of agōn is fulfilled. Where faith comes unstuck from grace and the congregation leaves off her vertical hope, she loses her prophetic power, authority and katechōn effect. (Aalders, 1969, p. 170).
1.8 Summary
The true historian, according to Aalders, experiences the angst of history (geschiedenis). It is just so with Daniel, Luther and Groen van Prinsterer, who possessed what was was lacking in many historians: [a sense of] history (historie) as the flaming scripture of a living God. Thus we learn to view history (geschiedenis) as culminating in eternity.
The only future expectation lies in Narrative (Historie), in which God condescends to enter time: ævum, indestructible time. For this expectation, it is crucial to be anchored in God’s revelation, to the end that faith be not suffered to become worldly. Therefore, the civitas Dei, History (Historie), must not allow itself to be apportioned to time and events (geschiedenis). It must, in contradistinction to revolution, recognize the Droit divin as being of eternal worth.
The ecclesia receives words of both warning and comfort in the Epistle to the Hebrews. The parousia delays and events (geschiedenis) exact their toll: on that account, then, a perilous situation for the ecclesia to be caught up in this process of dying that is called history (geschiedenis).
God has made Himself ever more lucidly known: first by way of myths, then through angels, and lastly, and most clearly and definitively, in the Son; all these draw us back to the beginning, the origin of things, the Creation. The Son abolishes history (geschiedenis) and opens the access to heavenly sanctity. The people that grasps this is Israel, which through teschuva yearns [back] to that which used to be.
The ecclesia, to recap, finds itself facing a dilemma: leave off the faith of Jesus, or quit historical reality. Hebrews demarcates the way of vertical consciousness, inclined toward the Invisible and toward making life a rising smoke. The ecclesia is not to let herself be confused by prolonged time, but by means of metanoia must rid herself of impure thoughts. That is possible through the Son. He opens the way to Creation reality, establishes that which is above, and forsakes earth, time and events (geschiedenis).
All this entails a great struggle, for the linear cannot bear the vertical. Notwithstanding this, faith enjoys all things already, for “faith is possessed of the things hoped for” [after Luther]. The paideia weans the ecclesia away from time and events (geschiedenis) and leads onward to glory. The arrabōn-earnest reflects that which shall be. There is a real danger of falling behind. Hence the call of the epistle.
The sin of Esau — backsliding into history (geschiedenis) — imperils the congregation, historicalizes the gospel and embraces the doctrine of meats. Thus the ecclesia is a skandalon while time lasts, but is also one calling in the wilderness, who nurtures no more expectation from time nor history.

Job history
I have been a full-time professional translator into English for nearly the whole of the past quarter-century: beginning with the British government from 2001-09, then at a leading Dutch translation agency from 2010-12 (with freelance translation work in the year in between while I was a teacher of English at a Dutch school). I also taught English at a school in Georgia for a year (1999-2000). I became a freelance translator in 2012 and a qualified conference interpreter (University of Ghent) in 2015.
For one academic year, I taught final-year undergraduate students of Dutch-to-English translation at ITV School of Interpreters & Translators, Utrecht. I have been a guest teacher of interpreting from Dutch to English at both of the Flemish universities which have a postgraduate course in that subject: Ghent and KU Leuven.
In 2010, seven months after immigrating to the Netherlands as a 30-year-old, I translated an entire Dutch philosophy Ph.D. thesis into English as a freelancer to great satisfaction. (See sample chapters further up this profile page.) I have since become a regular translator of specialist Dutch theological and church-history books by professors and other academics, published by Brill at Leiden.
The languages from which I regularly translate into English are Dutch and German (on a daily basis), Russian and Georgian (on a monthly basis), and French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian (on an occasional basis). I have lived and worked in Dutch-, German-, Russian- and Georgian-speaking environments, am fluent in all four languages and have on each occasion conducted my social, professional and church life fully in those languages.
Experience & Skills
I have particularly developed skills in formal English (the strongest of all being for academic, historical and theological texts), governmental and diplomatic English, accurate transcription of English (and of my other main languages), and English as used in church contexts. I had extensive and intensive liaisons with government and NGO officials from the other English-speaking countries during my eight years as a civil servant, particularly in the United States, and am well familiar with all formal and many informal usages of North American varieties of English.
Education
My M.A. degree is in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic (St John’s College, Cambridge). I am therefore able to translate all Celtic and Germanic languages, old, mediæval and modern. My most practised Celtic language is (modern) Scottish Gaelic, which I listen to for an average of two hours a day. I grew up in Britain with a Scots father and an English mother.
Interpreting (Tolkdiensten)
Since going freelance, as well as routinely interpreting for the institutions of the European Union both into English and into Dutch, I have undertaken numerous (consecutive) interpreting engagements between those two languages for Christian organisations and board meetings, for audiences of up to 4,000 and regarding annual budgets up to €1,500,000.
I also have experience with simultaneous (booth) interpreting for church services, Dutch to English and Russian to English. I graduated from Ghent University in 2015 as a conference interpreter with English A, Dutch B and German C. I am now working to add first French and then Greek C for the EU.
Voiceovers (Inspreekdiensten)
I have done a series of English voiceovers for a Dutch national media client and a leading Dutch translation and interpreting agency. I have a clear, educated British voice with sensitive intonation and pausing. I am now engaging in two audiobook projects, for both of which I will record the entire book in English.
Tutoring (Bijles)
I have successfully tutored Dutch-speaking and Georgian-speaking students, with mastery of English ranging from elementary to advanced levels, to pass professional examinations, to write academic theses in English, and to apply for jobs requiring a good level of English.
English Writing
For the same client and for another Netherlands-based educational organisation, Holmwood’s Online Learning, I write articles for students of English at levels from A2 (elementary learner) up to C2 (near-native learner). I am well versed in writing and editing sensitively to capture interest in a wide range of fields, and with reference to the varieties and levels of English that the readership is confident with.
Literature
I have had lifelong exposure to a great range of English literature and music, and am able to translate literature sensitively, including poetry and musical texts.
Bible translation and Church History
I am also a Bible translator for the Trinitarian Bible Society and the US-based Russian Bible Society (working directly from the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) for two languages of the Caucasus. Through these connections, but also building on my experience in academic Latin and Greek translation going back twenty years, I have built up a portfolio in the translation of high-level mediæval and Early Modern Latin to English, in specialist fields including theology, philosophy, medicine and law. I am able to transcribe scans of original C16th and C17th folio editions accurately, including Greek ligatures and Hebrew words, and use Microsoft Word features sensitively to reproduce the layout (a key feature to the full intelligibility of Early Modern scholarly texts) in its full detail.
