Source text - English To a large extent the changes affecting Latin America in the nineteenth century represented the triumph of a program imposed by an elite minority upon a reluctant and tenaciously resisting population. The Spanish colonial regime, although exploitative and oppressive, had not sought to destroy Indian customs and institutions entirely. Under Madrid’s domination and the mantle of Christianity, the Indians had kept intact much of their traditions and folkways. But the leaders of the newly independent states were less tolerant of indigenous cultures than the imperial Spanish had been. Eager to break with the colonial past, they embraced the creed of extreme individualism that was exciting contemporary Europeans and which bred contempt for the more helpless members of society. Proponents of Social Darwinism and similar perversions of the evolutionary theory classified races on a scale like that later adopted by Hitler’s Nazis. In spite of their own Iberian descent, they scorned the Spanish and Portuguese as decadent – weakened by their partial Indianization – and lauded the “superior” races of northern Europe and North America. Indians and Africans were dismissed as inferior and “backward”; whites were hailed as the chosen custodians of civilization.

Az indián törzsek Madrid uralma és a kereszténység leple alatt megőrizhették hagyományaik és népszokásaik nagy részét. Az újonnan függetlenné vált államok vezetői azonban már korántsem voltak olyan elnézők a bennszülött népek kultúrájával szemben, mint annak idején a Spanyol Birodalom uralkodói.
