Source text - English I wrote this article in English and translated it to Thai by myself to express my views on the teaching and learning of translation.
The Importance of Sentence Structure in Translation
More than 10 years ago, a famous Thai translator gave an interview on wanakam.com (now a defunct website). He said he had translated more than 200 books from English into Thai, but he couldn’t speak or write English to save his life! He claimed that his inability to speak and write English wasn’t an obstacle to his success.
In my view, the ability to write good English does help English-Thai translation.
Take a look at this example:

On April 12, 2000, before me, Adele Yoshioka, Notary Public, personally appeared Martha Mikita personally known to me or proved to me on the basis of satisfactory evidence to be the person whose name is subscribed to the within instrument and acknowledged to me that she executed the same in her authorized capacity, and that by her signature on the instrument the person, or the entity upon behalf of which the person acted, executed the instrument.
This is a restatement of the source text, using different sentence structure types:
On April 12, 2000, Martha Mikita personally appeared before me, Adele Yoshioka, Notary Public. I personally know her or she proved to me on the basis of satisfactory evidence that she is the person who subscribed her name to the within instrument. And she acknowledged to me that she executed such instrument in her authorized capacity, and that by her signature on the instrument the person, or the entity upon behalf of which the person acted, executed the instrument.

I know for sure that many highly skilled translators can correctly translate the above English text into Thai without having to make a restatement because they have already acquired advanced English writing skills. I’m still not sure if that famous translator can correctly translate the above English text.
The purpose of this post:
Quite a few former publisher editors run short English-Thai translation courses. In their ads, they proudly demonstrate how to translate English texts into overly eloquent Thai texts, hoping to impress prospective students. If I were them, I would rather focus on the teaching of varieties of sentence structure types in the English and the Thai language.
