Taleban militants have freed 12 South Korean missionaries held hostage in southern Afghanistan for six weeks, a day after South Korean delegates held face-to-face talks with the insurgent group
By this evening the ousted Islamist movement still held seven hostages, but promised to free them in the coming days.
Twenty-three South Koreans, part of a Christian aid group, were kidnapped in Ghazni province while driving from Kabul to the southern city of Kandahar. Two male hostages were murdered by militants and two women were released two weeks ago as a “goodwill” gesture.
The latest releases came in three batches. Three women were released in the morning, four women and a man were released several hours later and as dusk approached a further four hostages were released. Three of the hostages have been named as Ahn Hye Jin, Lee Jung Ran and Han Ji Young.
