As Figure 13.10(a) shows, the largest market segment is aerospace applications, which, together with cutting tools, represent more than 85% of the total market. Similiarly, although the potential market for diamond thin films is dominated by commercial semiconductors, the projected market for these coatings in engineering applications is $160 million which is comparable to the anticipated usage of ceramic coatings in the same application of metal cutting.
