inglês para espanhol: CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STATUS IN MEXICO General field: Adm./Finanças Detailed field: Negócios/comércio (geral)
Texto de origem - inglês Although Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) origins are strictly philanthropic in Mexico, a rising number of companies are currently incorporating CSR practices to their business strategies. New though the concept of social responsibility is in our country, related actions date back to early local history.
The first signs of Mexican philanthropy are found in Pre-Spanish times: several accounts describe the presence of calpullis in Aztecan society. These groups represented “social, economic, political, cultural and religious unity in Aztecan society, since, in addition to gathering people of similar linage, they were controlled by a head or patriarch who belonged to the same group and transmitted prevailing values.” For Aztecs, schools not only acted as sources of knowledge and social aid but also disseminated society’s values, while training young men as warriors and teaching home chores to women. Elders held a significant position in society, for they were viewed as sources of wisdom on account of their past experiences.
During the conquest (1521-1580), the Catholic Church played a crucial role: the first religious orders to arrive in Mexican soil were Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustines. These missionaries set out not only to spread Catholic teachings, but also to help the local population in the construction of churches, hospitals and schools. Some accounts report that, usually, a hospital was built next to a church to provide care for the Indians, plagued by constant wars and disease outbreaks during the conquest. Religious communities protected Indians from the imposition of a European lifestyle –so foreign to their traditional ways. Thus, society increasingly leaned towards a paternalistic model, in which solutions to all problems were expected to come from a higher authority.

Texto de origem - inglês The use of force in politically organised groups
The history of humanity is also the history of its violent conflicts, its wars. Conflicts are an inherent part of social life, and violence, in several forms, has regrettably permeated mankind evolution.
In organised social groups, the use of force –which, at first, was unique and undifferentiated- was reserved to those who preserved peace, enforced norms and defended the group in several kinds of conflicts with other groups and against animal threats, serving also as hunters to provide for other needs.
Evolution in society, technology, criminal complexity, and increased warfare weaponry and equipment deadliness gradually changed the roles of the use of force to serve politically organised groups, bringing about the distinctions between military and police forces. National states –with a rather short history in humanity’s long journey- employed armies, fleets and air forces made up by citizens, with or without hired mercenaries, to pursue their interests, not only or necessarily associated with defence purposes or against other states. They used drafts and, with varying degrees of acceptance, built the volunteer and professional armed corps that characterise some current armed forces.

Texto de origem - inglês Q. – And so the company started transporting liquefied gas as an additional business, diversifying its activities?
A. - Yes. When my father died, we already owned three gas transport ships. They sailed between Puerto Percy in Tierra del Fuego, Punta Arenas and Puerto Chacabuco in Chile and Ushuaia and Río Gallegos in Argentina.
Q. – Was it a regional company?
A. - Yes. I could add that the company’s interest in liquefied gas was my doing. In 1959, I became interested in an important bid initiated by ENAP company for transporting liquefied gas from Tierra del Fuego to the center of Chile. To that purpose, I visited the three largest operators in the world, Gasocéan in France, Cosangas in Denmark and Mundogas in Bermudas. We eventually entered the ENAP bid with Mundogas. However, the contract was awarded to the French company. I brought the gas idea to the company. I got interested, and my father approved of it, he liked doing new things.
Q. - Was it a matter of innovation, building the first gas transport ship and devoting to that activity?
A. – In fact, I have great memories of my friend Hector Wilson, who played a significant part in our business development. We maintained an excellent relationship, and we built terminals and the storage plant, thus increasing gas storage capacity in the strait of Magallanes.
Q. - When Wolf and you assumed control of the company, did you do so as managing partners? Did you specialize in any particular area?
A. - I worked in all areas. Later, during my father’s last years, I led the company. My brother was in the operational area. I liked all sections, from agency and port operations to the gas terminal in Punta Arenas. We built a port to disembark gas in Río Gallegos; in Ushuaia, we facilitated ports for gas disembarking. In 1978, Argentina cancelled contracts on account of the Beagle canal conflict -the international dispute over the three islands in the Beagle canal. Our relationship with Gas del Estado remained intact; we received a compensation for contract cancellation.
There is still another anecdote about mi father that illustrates how much he enjoyed the business and undertaking projects, by the time he was already dying. He had come along with me on a trip to Valparaiso. I was already in charge of ship operations. He was over 60 years of age. “Let’s talk about this nice business of ours”, he said and added, “I would give anything to live ten years longer; I would give a leg, or both arms, whatever”. Those words made a deep impression on me. They reflected the true nature of an entrepreneur…
