The Lodz Session of the 5th International Maastricht-Lodz Duo Colloquium on “Translation and Meaning” will be organized by the University of Lodz, Faculty of Philology in Lodz, Poland.
The 2010 Lodz Session will be geared towards theory, and will deal with theoretical aspects of the central theme of the Duo Colloquium and the sub-themes suggested for it. The central theme is “Translation and Meaning” and the sub-themes are:
A) meaning in translation/interpreting from the point of view of:
1 (a) cognitive sciences (e.g. think-aloud protocols and other modes of reflection,
prototypicality, etc.)
(b) computer-assisted translation training, electronic teaching/learning environments, distance teaching./learning
(c) corpus linguistics and language corpora
(d) history of translation
(e) lexicology, lexicography
(f) local translation/interpreting programmes
(g) machine translation, machine-aided translation, other computer aids, combinations of computer aids
(h) new theoretical/practical developments
(i) philosophy / the philosophy of language, etc.
(j) pragmatics, semantics, semiotics
(k) psycholinguistics, psychology
(l) sociolinguistics/sociology and minority status, institutionalised multilingualism, interculturality, cultural identity
(m) software localisation
(n) subtitling, dubbing
(o) terminology, conceptuology, expert systems (e.g. term-word distinction, automated term extraction, etc.)
(p) text linguistics (e.g. text typology, text analysis, etc.)
(q) the interplay between theory and practice
(r) translation theory, translation studies
(s) various types of translating/interpreting
2 (a) the relation between translator/interpreter and client/customer
(b) the student of translation/interpreting
(c) the translation trainer/the trainer of interpreting
(d) the translator/interpreter
B) meaning in the translation/interpretation of:
1 (a) the language of economics / business
(b) the language of law / politics
(c) the language of media and the arts
(d) the language of medicine / biology
(e) the language of science / technology / IT
(f) the language of tourism/leisure
2 (a) holy scriptures
(b) literature
(c) LSP vs. general language vs. phraseology vs. terminology, etc.
(d) allusions, figurative language, jokes, metaphors, etc.
C) quality assessment of translation/interpreting and modes/modalities of training
D) The role of translation methods/strategies in:
1 the actual practice of translating/interpreting
2 the training of translation/interpreting
Note that this list is not exhaustive.
Participation is open to translators, interpreters, teachers of translation, teachers of interpreting, linguists, terminologists, terminographers, computer specialists, lexicographers, publishers, etc.
Venue for Lodz: The Lodz session will be held at the Guest and Conference Centre of the University of Lodz, ul. Kopcinskiego 16/18.
A selection of the contributions will be published in the form of proceedings. Contributors should focus their paper on the central theme of the overall Duo Colloquium, i.e. “Translation and Meaning”.
Abstracts: The deadline for submission of abstracts for the Lodz session is 15 June 2010. Notification of acceptance will be emailed to participants by June 30th.
Participants intending to give a paper should send a 300-400 word abstract of their paper to the Secretary of the Lodz Organizing Committee prof. Lukasz Bogucki. Please send abstracts by email as Word attachments ([email protected]). The abstract should contain the title of the paper, the name(s) and academic title(s) of the author(s), the full name(s) and address(es) of the affiliation(s)/institute(s) of the author(s), and, in the top right hand corner, the sub-theme(s) (see the list of sub-themes) that the paper covers.
The language of papers can be English, German, Spanish or French.
Colloquium languages: The languages of the Lodz session will be English, German, Spanish and French.
Registration: Participants are expected for registration on Thursday, 16 September 2010 between 09.00h and 16.00h. Location: Kopcinskiego 16/18.
Provisional programme: Participants are expected for registration on Thursday 16 September 2010. The academic programme starts on Thursday 16 September at 16.00h and finishes on Sunday 19 September around lunchtime.
Individual lectures (in a number of parallel sessions) will be of 30 minutes, followed by not more than 10 minutes of discussion. The programme and format of the presentations will depend on the number of participants attending and may be altered accordingly.
A gala dinner and a classical music performance will take place on Saturday September 18th. The cost is PLN 150 (approx. €35).
Participants will receive the final programme and the volume of abstracts on registration.
The Lodz session will be rather informal, thus giving all participants the opportunity to exchange ideas.

Technical equipment: For every participant giving a paper at the Lodz session it is possible to make use of the following equipment:
• whiteboard
• overhead projector
• laptop computer and Power Point projector
Colloquium fee: The fee is €200 (two hundred euros). This includes registration, the academic programme, the social programme, a copy of the abstracts, and all other documentation. The fee does not cover accommodation and full board on the three days of the Lodz session nor a copy of the proceedings. Details concerning accommodation will be given in the Second Circular.
NOTE: Participants from countries with currency restrictions can apply for a reduction of the fee.
Cash payment on arrival incurs a 10% cash-handling fee (the total fee is then €220).
Students’ fee is €100. Please bring proof of your student status.
Subsidised fee for Polish participants living and working in Poland is PLN 250.
