A couple of recent CAT experiences Jun 1, 2019

I'm not really using a CAT tool -- yet. But for what it's worth, I'll weigh in with a couple of fairly recent things that happened. A Canadian agency (with the happy distinction of being the ONLY agency I've dealt with in my time zone) responded to an email I sent on a specific job. A Canadian agency (with the happy distinction of being the ONLY agency I've dealt with in my time zone) responded to an email I sent on a specific job. They had already chosen some other translators they knew as the project was very time sensitive. But the PM said they liked my background and hoped to work with me in the future but that I absolutely would HAVE to learn "a" CAT tool (not a specific one, just "a" tool). No ifs, ands or buts. Then, a short time ago, I got a form email that was interesting: It was an agency that I must have also communicated with at some point and they had me in their data base. They wanted people to take a test that, as I recall, didn't sound terrible. They also offered an online type of "course" or web-inar on MemoQ that you could sign up for that they were offering to potential translators to be added to their list of collaborators. Unfortunately, the timing was bad for me, but if I had been free I would have definitely done this. It wasn't hugely demanding in terms of time -- a few hours I believe. There was nothing really horrible that I found in their approach. I saw it as a chance to learn something new and MemoQ is one of the CAT tools (along with Wordfast) that I would like to learn.Collapse

Allthough sometimes I am wondering if it is of any use at all. I have huge TM's, but still have to look up words, lets stand alone that my CAT has complete pre-translated sentences that would speed up my work.

Furthermore, this tool for TRANSLATORS is being (ab)used by many agencies to squeeze as much money out of us as possible with there so called grids, complete with fuzzies (= more work then translating from scratch).

Thinking of it, I use my CAT (TM's) mainly as dictionary (that is why TM-Town isn't working in the way they promised, but that aside).

Positive point is the control over consistency, but for the rest.....????
