Native American flute music is soothing, inspirational, and non-disturbing when played at a low volume in the background.

It depends how much concentration is needed. If I am proofreading or translating something complicated, usually something quiet without lyrics; otherwise, I can work with most music genres I like listening to.

I love music far too much to be able to work with something playing. The kind of music I listen to is "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME" and nothing else even exists when it's playing. The only exception is when I'm translating CD sleeve notes, then I'll listen to music by that artist as I work, to get a feel for the right mood.

French Chanteuse Music | Aug 5, 2019 |
… like the somewhat sultry kind you might be treated to at an intimate Parisian bistro. They occasionally play such music at a coffee house in the college town of Oberlin, Ohio, that I sometimes go to first thing in the morning so I can work there.
Medieval music | Aug 5, 2019 |
When I feel very tired and easily get distracted, medieval music, like Libre Vermell, is very helpful.
No music at all | Aug 5, 2019 |
I don't listen to music while working at all. I can't concentrate. But I wish I could.

Never have. I find it too distracting. Music has been one of my loves throughout life, but it's something that needs to take a backseat in the office, unfortunately.
I usually listen to rock while working. Silence when checking my own translations or proofreading someone else's work. NO radio - the talking really distracts me. Still trying to explain to my wife that I can work with music on, but I cannot work if she tells me about a wonderful bag she has seen in a shop.
No music for me | Aug 6, 2019 |
Language has its own rhythm. Music interferes with that. Unfortunately, I became deaf 3 years ago. I hear nothing without hearing aids, and they distort music so badly that I never listen to it any more.

How can I possibly concentrate on translation whilst entangled in the subtleties of a Haydn string quartet?!
Adam Warren France Local time: 12:54 Member (2005) French to English
... so that I can hear the English in my head, and so as not to interfere with dictation, which requires near-total concentration. Classical music helps me unwind when I have worked myself to a standstill, and I have completed a day's work so that I am assured that deadlines will be met.

I listen to several types of music while I'm working, but it's always on. Usually good ol' rock'n roll of the 70's.
