TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS OF TURKEY WILL CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY ON SUNDAY WITH A WELL-ORGANISED EVENT IN ISTANBUL

In the last five years or so, translators in Turkey have accelerated their struggles for becoming socially visible and for being recognized by the Government. By means of various organizations, they have gathered and discussed their problems. Consequently, they come to a point where they give up simple complaints and begin concentrating on practice by looking for solutions together.
Translation Students Association of Turkey (TUCEB) has been a driving force in this process. Found in 2010, this de facto association aims at bringing together all shareholders of translation (translators, interpreters, translation department professors, translation agencies and translation student) to solve problems of translators and the sector. Up until now, nearly ten conferences and tens of workshops have been made for these purposes and nearly all organizations have had chance to introduce themselves and propose solutions. Unfortunately, translators are still far from reaching their goals. However, many constructive effort have been made. Firstly, translators are now more aware of their profession and its value and have more chances of coming together in different platforms and find immediate solutions for their immediate problems. Secondly, Professional Standards Institution (MYK) has launched a project for defining and determining standards for translators, which is fairly new in Turkey and may be considered a “precursor” of a revolution in Turkey. Thirdly, this enthusiastic totality of translators provides opportunities for Translation Organizations to bring together these translators and help them stand together for good, which brings responsibility for all shareholders in future.
As a precursor of a wonderful future for translators and as a way of bringing all translators of Turkey together to struggle for their social visibility and improvement in their working conditions, TRANSLATORS and INTERPRETERS in Turkey will celebrate International Translation Day with a two-step organization in Istanbul. Firstly, translators and interpreters will come together in Taksim Square and walk through Istiklal Street (which is the centre of Turkey and one of the most crowded places in Istanbul) with banners in their hands and then, they will arrive at the event location: Depo Istanbul and start the celebration activities ranging from exhibition to dance and music. ▲ Collapse
