Source text - English Before June 2013, Macedonia had a rather liberal abortion law. Women could undergo the surgical intervention without being subjected to a mandatory waiting period and counselling.
Since the June 2013 imposition of a more restrictive abortion law, however, abortion in Macedonia has become not only bureaucratized, but also a complicated and drawn-out procedure exacerbated by the already unfavorable climate regarding the termination of pregnancy.
Despite the existence of constitutionally guaranteed secularism and freedom of choice regarding childbirth, the mainstream political and media discourse in Macedonia is saturated with anti-choice religious references, including in state-sponsored public campaigns against abortion.
Today in Macedonia there is no comprehensive sex education and affordable high-quality (emergency) contraceptives are not widely available, nor is medical abortion officially sanctioned. In addition, the disintegrating public healthcare system is understaffed, outdated and often not easily accessible–especially for those who live in rural and smaller urban settlements.
That is the context in which I speak out in defense of my right, and the right of all women, to safe, legal, quickly obtainable and affordable abortions
Translation - French Avant juin 2013, la loi sur l'avortement en Macédoine était plutôt libérale. Les femmes pouvaient avoir recours à cette intervention chirurgicale sans n'avoir à passer ni par une période de réflexion obligatoire, ni par des séances d'aide psychologique.
Cependant, depuis l'imposition en juin 2013 d'une loi sur l'avortement plus restrictive, l'avortement en Macédoine s'est non seulement bureaucratisé, mais est devenu une procédure interminable et compliquée que les conditions difficiles entourant une interruption de grossesse exacerbent encore.
Bien que la laïcité et la liberté de choisir en ce qui concerne la naissance soient garanties constitutionellement, le discours politique et médiatique dominant en Macédoine est saturé de références religieuses anti-choix, y compris dans les campagnes publiques contre l'avortement sponsorisées par l'Etat.
Aujourd'hui en Macédoine l'éducation sexuelle n'est pas généralisée, des contraceptifs de bonne qualité (pilules du lendemain) et à un prix abordable ne sont pas disponibles partout, et l'avortement médical n'est pas officiellement autorisé. De plus, le système public de santé en voie de désintégration est obsolète, en sous-effectif et bien souvent difficile d'accès - notamment à la campagne ou dans les petites villes.
C'est dans ce contexte que je défends mon droit, et celui de toutes les femmes, à un avortement sans danger, légal, accessible rapidemment et à un prix abordable.
