Source text - English This explanation solved the findings of fish fossils on mountain but another question floated. How long it took the molten mass to cool down like our earth today. This could also be a way to measure the age of earth. Before Leclerc Newton had mentioned in his 'Principia' that a red-hot iron globe equal in size of earth will require 50000 years to cool down. Leclerc experimented with different types of heating-cooling balls in his laboratory. He came to the conclusion that it will take 36000 years for cooling of earth so that life can exist and further it will take 39000 years to reach the present state. As a result the age of earth came out to be 75000 years. This was almost 20 times more than what was given by religious dogma (4004 BC). Again it was condemned by Sorbonne and later Leclerc had to publish retraction. Leclerc work can be regarded as beginning of scientific calculation of world's age. This was just beginning of the story. In 19th century Darwin's Theory of Evolution provided a new horizon to science. The process of evolution through natural selection provided the basis of understanding of origin of different species. But this process needed very long time for present species to come into existence. Thus the Evolution Theory suggested the age of earth to be much higher than as suggested by Theology and Leclerc. Geology also pointed towards a longer time scale. Next step in this regard was taken by Frenchman Jean Joseph Fourier (1768-1830). He gave mathematical technique for dealing with varying phenomena (Fourier analysis). He developed this technique because he was fascinated by the way heat flows from hot body to cooler one. He worked on propagation of heat in solid bodies. Earlier Leclerc had considered a constant cooling rate for earth. Fourier considered that earth is cooler material layer on surface with still hot core inside. So it will take much longer time to cool down. In 1820 he calculated age of earth by his method that came out to be 100 million years. It was very higher than 75000 years given by Leclerc. He thought his calculation of age of earth to be so higher that it made him skeptic of it and he never published this formula of age calculation. He never knew that it was very small actually.	Translation - Hindi इस व्याख्या ने मछलियों के जीवाश्म का पहाड़ों पर पाए जाने की गुत्थी तो सुलझा दी पर एक नया सवाल सतह पर उभर आया। पिघले द्रव्य के गोले से निर्मित पृथ्वी को आज की स्थिति में पहुँचने में आखिर कितना समय लगा होगा ? यह भी पृथ्वी की आयु को नापने के एक तरीका हो सकता था। लेक्लार्क के पहले न्यूटन ने अपनी किताब 'प्रिन्सिपिया' में यह गणना की थी कि पृथ्वी के आकार के एक लाल गर्म लोहे के गोले को ठंढा होने में पचास हज़ार साल लगेंगे। लेक्लार्क ने अपनी प्रयोगशाला में विभिन्न प्रकार के गोलों को लेकर उनके गर्म और ठंढा होने का निरीक्षण किया। उन्होंने यह निष्कर्ष निकाला कि पृथ्वी को इतना ठंढा होने में जितने में यहां पर जीवन संभव हो सके 36000 साल लगेंगे और उसके बाद 39000 साल और लगेंगे जितने में यह वर्तमान अवस्था में पहुँच सके। इसके अनुसार धरती की आयु 75 हज़ार साल आयी। यह संख्या धार्मिक सूत्रों के आधार पर की गई गणना (4004 साल) से 20 गुना ज्यादा थी। इसका भी धर्माधिकारियों की तरफ से कड़ा विरोध किया गया और कड़े दबाव के चलते एक बार फिर लेक्लार्क को अपनी बात वापस लेनी पड़ी। लेकिन यह इस कहानी की बस शुरुआत थी। विज्ञान और तार्किकता का बवंडर यूरोप में प्रवेश कर चुका था, अगली शताब्दी उथलपुथल लेकर आ रही थी, विज्ञान की पताका के सामने धर्म की ध्वजा डगमगाने लगी थी। यह केवल धर्म नहीं था जिसकी प्रस्थापनाओं की बुनियाद हिलने वाली थी जबकि विज्ञान की पुरानी प्रस्थापनाओं की भी कड़ी परीक्षा होने वाली थी। 19वीं शताब्दी डार्विन के विकासवाद सिद्धान्त ने विज्ञान को एक नया क्षितिज दिया। प्राकृतिक चयनवाद के द्वारा अलग अलग जीवधारियों की उत्पत्ति और विकास को समझने का एक तार्किक आधार मिला। लेकिन प्राकृतिक चयन की यह प्रक्रिया एक बहुत लंबे समय की मांग करती थी ताकि वर्तमान पृथ्वी पर उपस्थित जटिल जीवधारियों अस्तित्व में आ सकें। इस प्रकार डार्विन के विकासवाद के सिद्धान्त ने बाइबिल की गणना और लेक्लार्क कि गणना से भी काफी ज्यादा पृथ्वी की आयु की तरफ इशारा किया। भूगर्भ विज्ञान भी एक लंबे समय की तरफ ही इशारा कर रहा था। इस दिशा में अगला उल्लेखनीय काम फ्रांसीसी जीन जोसफ फ़ौरीएर (Jean Joseph Fourier ) 1768-1830 ने किया।उन्होंने किसी बदलती हुई परिघटना की गणना के लिए गणितीय सूत्र (Fourier Analysis) विकसित किया। फ़ौरीएर ऐसे व्यक्ति थे जो ऊष्मा प्रवाह (Heat Transfer) के दीवाने थे। उन्होंने ठोस वस्तुओं में ऊष्मा के संचरण पर काफी मेहनत किया। इसके पहले लेक्लार्क ने पृथ्वी की आयु की गणना करने के लिए उसके ठंढे होने की दर को स्थिर माना था। फ़ौरीएर ने दूसरी तरह देखा जो ऊपर से ठंढी और अंदर से गर्म थी। इसलिए इसको ठंढा होने में काफी समय लगता। 1820 ई. में उन्होंने अपनी पद्धति से पृथ्वी की आयु की गणना की जो कि 10 करोड़ (100 million) साल आयी। यह लेक्लार्क कि गणना 75 हज़ार साल से काफी ज्यादा थी। इस ऊंची संख्या ने लेक्लार्क को अपनी पद्धति के बारे में इतना सशंकित कर दिया कि उन्होंने पृथ्वी की आयु के इस सूत्र को कभी प्रकाशित नहीं किया। फ़ौरीएर को यह आभास भी नहीं था कि यह संख्या वास्तव में कितनी छोटी थी।
