Translation - English The summer of 2022, with its numerous heat waves, has undoubtedly been the one of awareness of global warming and climate emergency. The rise in temperature is causing the melting of the Greenland ice and the rise in sea level. This is leading to an increase in the intensity of meteorological disasters such as cyclones and floods, in addition to more and more devastating fires. Their cost is increasingly high. This cost is certainly financial: it is borne by households, companies, communities, insurers and reinsurers; it is also human: for example, 5 people died in the middle of August following violent storms in Corsica.
To avoid increasingly serious consequences, the 2015 Paris Climate Conference set a target of a temperature increase of less than 2°C compared to those reached in the pre-industrial era. To achieve this, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must be significantly reduced, the main one being carbon dioxide (CO2). According to the European Environment Agency, in 2019, 77% of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union were from the energy sector, 11% from agriculture, 9% from industry and 3% from waste management. The European Union is the third largest emitter of GHG behind China and the United States.
