O cientista Thomas Lovejoy, um dos mais respeitados especialistas em biodiversidade e presidente do Centro Heinz de Ciências, Economia e Meio Ambiente, defendeu, na palestra de abertura do Fórum, um “esforço planetário” para restaurar os ecossistemas do mundo, em particular os da floresta amazônica.
Ao discorrer sobre o tema "A importância da Amazônia no contexto das mudanças climáticas globais", Lovejoy, que já foi vice-presidente do WWF nos Estados Unidos, alertou para a possibilidade de algumas regiões da floresta amazônica, dentro e fora do Brasil, desaparecerem em alguns anos por causa das intervenções humanas. Em especial as do leste e sul da floresta, que atualmente são as mais afetadas, segundo o especialista.
Neste aspecto, o cientista criticou projetos de desenvolvimento que acabam interferindo no equilíbrio do ecossistema, como a construção de rodovias e de hidrelétricas. “Rodovias causam um impacto pesadíssimo e muito sério. Estradas induzem ao desmatamento. Elas precisam ser substituídas por trilhos ou por hidrovias. Isso porque a floresta é responsável pelo equilíbrio do clima", explicou. O cientista citou como exemplo ações de desmatamento ocorridas em Rondônia, com a utilização de fogo, responsáveis por um longo período de seca na região.

Scientist Thomas Lovejoy, one of the most respected specialists in biodiversity and president of the Heinz Center of Sciences, Economy, and Environment, defended, in the opening Forum lecture, a “global effort” to recuperate the ecosystems of the world, in particular the one in the Amazon forest.
As the theme “The importance of the Amazon in global weather changes” unfolded, Lovejoy, who was once vice-president of WWF in the United States, warned the audience about the possibility of forest areas in the Amazon, both inside and outside Brazil, disappearing in some years because of human intervention – especially those areas in the eastern and southern ends of the forest, which are currently the most affected regions, according to the specialist.
Regarding this issue, the scientist criticized development projects that end up interfering in the balance of the ecosystem, such as the construction of highways and hydroelectric power plants. “Highways cause a heavy and very serious impact. Highways foster devastation. They need to be substituted by rails or hydro-transport because the forest is responsible for climate balance”, he explained. The scientist referred to the case of the deforestation which took place in the State of Rondônia, through the use of fire, leading to a long period of drought in the area.
