Spanish term

venoclisis

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Medical Supplies
The medical dictionary offers this translation: venoclysis, but I was wondering if there was another more common term used among health care providers. It comes from a list of Infusion-Extraction Supplies:"llaves y lineas para venoclisis.

Discussion

Ana SIERRA VINUESA Dec 8, 2006:
Hola Stuart

I find this link, may it will clarify the topic. I am glad to discover out this, and i insist: it is important to learn from both languages you translate...this question was posed before in KudoZ see bob.proz.com/kudoz/809122. Best regards, Myriam and Sue
Ana SIERRA VINUESA Dec 8, 2006:
Dearest Sue, i only wanted to inform Myriam, if it is more common other term than venoclysis ok, you are English but i do not agree with you: because asker translate spanish into english it is relevant to know the spanish use of the term..just to know.

Thank you for the lively debate. Not only do I enjoy all of your comments but it makes me a more informed world citizen.
Non-ProZ.com Dec 8, 2006:
You are right, Sue. That is exactly why I posted the question. I have looked at the dicitonaries and see that venoclysis is the equivalent in English. I suspected, however, that is not commonly used among health care providers. For this question I am most interested in usage, which as you correctly state, changes over time. I want the reader to read the text today, in 2006-07 as if it was written in the target language.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Dec 8, 2006:
If Myriam wants an English term that is understood by medical personnel TODAY rather than early last century, she should NOT use "venoclysis" - whether it is used in Spanish or not is irrelevant.
Ana SIERRA VINUESA Dec 8, 2006:
Maybe in English it´s an old fashion term, but in Spanish it is used still in textbooks, although in the rutinary clinical practice you add IV more often. It would be a formal way to express this technique. In the context Myriam show us i would use it.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Dec 7, 2006:
The term venoclysis was used in early literature to describe continuous delivery of physiologic and therapeutic solutions directly into the bloodstream. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/432394

venoclysis

You can also find "venopunction" but it is also for blood sampling.
Venoclysis is the correct term used in medical jargon
Peer comment(s):

neutral Dr Sue Levy (X) : this is an old term no longer used in medicine - and it's venepuncture, not venopunction :-)
