Spanish term

retraso o adelanto (in this context)

Spanish to English Other Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Objetivos:
1.6- Estudiar el impacto de otros eventos como la salida del hogar de origen en el ***retraso o adelanto*** en la edad de salida del sistema educativo y la edad de ingreso al mercado de trabajo.

I can't come up with a good translation for "adelanto". Any ideas on how to translate it (if possible the whole sentence) would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Study the impact of other events (such as leaving one's original home) on the age of exit from the educational system - be it an acceleration or a delay - and the age of incorporation into the workplace.

delaying or bringing forward

Below are a couple of ideas for the many ways this sentence could be tackled, but for adelanto I suggest "bring forward"

Studying the impact other events have, such as leaving home, on delaying or bringing forward the school leaving age and labour market incorporation age.

Studying the impact other events have, such as leaving home, on delaying or bringing forward the age young people leave school and join the labour market.

agree Bubo Coroman (X) : yes, alternatively: putting back or bringing forward

Yes, that's nice, two phrasal verbs together

Just omit the expression

I would say *To study the impact ... on the school-leaving age*

The meaning is perfectly understood, as the impact can only be to increase or decrease the age. Moreover, it is tidier.

Hope this helps.

agree Carol Gullidge : yep! more concise for the English market
