Simply put, a carrier is not making money if they are not hauling freight. The vast majority of carriers have customer located near their home base where they pick up freight to deliver to points across the country. Each of these outbound shipments is called a Headhaul. Once that shipment has been completed, the backhaul comes into play. A backhaul is a shipment that allows a carrier to make money on the trip back to their home base. By unilizing backhauls instead of heasdhauls, you save money. You as a broker can make more money and the your customer or shipper can save more money. By nature, back haul rates are cheaper than Headhaul rates because carriers need to get their trucks home as quickly as possible to service their customer(s). http://truckdispatching.wordpress.com/tag/headhaul/
Example sentence:

But why would anyone think that any load should pay less because it is a "backhaul?" Freight is freight and it costs the same going out or coming in. One persons headhaul may be another's backhaul.

trayecto de ida / trayecto principal

Quite a few people seem also get stuck on this one. Each resource I found said the correct term was "trayecto de ida / trayecto principal" which is outward or principal journey.

I almost forgot to add the translation of "backhaul" which is "viaje de regreso."

Your terms should really be two separate questions

Backhaul is the return movement of a truck from its original destination to its original point of origin, especially when carrying goods back over all or part of the same route.
http://www.shipnorthamerica.com/htmfiles/gloss_shipterms.htm

In trucking, a backhaul is hauling cargo back from point B to the originating point A.[1] Since it costs almost as much time and fuel to drive empty as fully loaded this makes economic sense as it pays for the trip back for the trucker.

Head Haul

Head Haul refers to traffic moving along a route with greater than average volume. It applies in situations when there is a greater volume of traffic in one direction (Head Haul) than the opposite direction (Back Haul).
http://www.trademarktrans.com/node/256?KeepThis=true&height=...

“Headhaul” is when there is more freight moving from one geographic region to
another than is being transported back. Put another way, there is more freight in the
market moving from point A to point B
than from point B to point A.

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. It has helped a lot. Sandra.
