consentimiento PG

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This is a correspondence about a clinical trial. They have previously referred to consent forms, now they are talking about consentimiento PG, and I´m not sure what the PG refers to.

Joseph Tein Mar 26, 2015:
acronyms -- @ neilmac I've seen your comments about not doing acronyms many times. In my view, it's nothing to brag about. I consider it part of my job to make a reasonable effort to translate acronyms ... there are lots of useful online resources (chiefly cosnautas) for medical acronyms, and there is ProZ, as in this case. It does take more time to research them, and still I think it's what I'm responsible for. I'll say "unknown acronym" without feeling guilty after I've tried all the resources available.
Dr Jane Marshall (asker) Mar 26, 2015:
Thanks everyone for your input, it was definitely helpful to hear others´opinions. In the end I left it as PG consent with a note that I thought they were referring to pharmacogenetic consent (I found another webiste, related to clinical trials-in India-that mentioned pharmacogenetic consent) but that it could equally be a different type of consent/consent form. If I get any feedback from the agency I´ll post it here for interests sake! Thanks again.
neilmac Mar 26, 2015:
This is why I don't "do" acronyms. In my collaboration terms and conditions, the clients using them MUST define them a priori, otherwise they are left as is. It saves me lots of time, which is better spent on other tasks.
I haven't seen "PharmacoGenetic" in reference to consents in other clinical trial translations I have done, but it's not one of my main fields, either. However, I don't see anything in the docs I found on that web page -- and I've found the translated web page at

http://www.ins.gob.pe/ensayosclinicos/rpec/recuperarECPBNuev...

that mentions either genetic or pharmacogenetic testing. In fact, I don't find "consentimiento pg" anywhere but in the page for this trial, but it's been many years since I worked in clinical trials, and never in this particular field.

Very puzzling, indeed.

I think I'd consult the client.

I think it may be from the English PharmacoGenetic...
Dr Jane Marshall (asker) Mar 25, 2015:
That´s a good point Elizabeth. I had had a look at that page before but didn´t click with that.
I think I've found the Peruvian government's page with the info on the clinical trial http://www.ins.gob.pe/ensayosclinicos/rpec/recuperarECPBNuev...

and I find both

Formulario de Consentimiento Informado Principal

AND

which leads me to believe that "principal" does not apply to "PG"

Dr Jane Marshall (asker) Mar 25, 2015:
The study is about asthma treatment
Dr Jane Marshall (asker) Mar 25, 2015:
And that´s the eng of the paragraph. Also has the same for "asentimineto PG principal" in similar context.

Cinnamon Nolan Mar 25, 2015:
@ Dr Marshall The 1st thing I thought of was "Main page" (Página principal), but that would be in English, as Neil pointed out, and there would be a preposition missing... Does "PG" occur anywhere else in the document?
Although it's true that original documents can have all kinds of errors... Is the rest of the document well written? Do English abbreviations or acronyms appear elsewhere?
But it's for adults, so I don't see why a parent or guardian would sign it unless the subject was incompetent...
neilmac Mar 25, 2015:
Parent or Guardian? Although that would be an English abbreviation, it wouldn't be the first time...
Dr Jane Marshall (asker) Mar 25, 2015:
I wonder if I´m complicating it and it just means "pagina"...

PG consent

Jumping in late with my contribution: PG stands for pharmacogenetic or pharmacogenomic as you correctly guessed, Jane.

I translate a lot of these documents. Usually it's written out in full:
"Consentimiento Informado Farmacogenético".

Pharmacogenetic/pharmacogenomic is used interchangeably, even within the same document sometimes. Luckily the abbreviation is the same.

neutral Diplomonde : Given that the document states ("para adultos") I draw the conclusion that in this instance the document is making a reference to an informed parental consent form: ("Parental Guidance") No different than as in the movie rating PG 13.
